De La Soul Reveals: It Wasn’t Always Roses In ‘The Daisy Age’ (Video)

WAIT! Before you play this interview, look at the freeze frame (esp. at Pos). The expressions captured… if there was ever an image conveying exactly the opposite of what you would think of a clique/movement called The Daisy Age… that has to be it, right?
It follows that in this clip, the De La Soul trio goes deeper in depth about what most heads already know: The flowers did not really smell as sweet as we thought back then. Listen as they touch on some things you heard and saw, but probably dismissed because you believed in something beautiful… a Hip-Hop family of artists growing in a Garden of Eden of sorts. They weren’t as tight-knit as we thought. There were actually comparatively few collabos coming out of the collective. Wowww.
Every garden has its weeds though. Truth.
Very interesting watch.

Classic Clips: De La Soul’s First Performance On Dutch TV Back In April of 1989 (Video)

Back in March of 1989 the legendary Native tongues affiliated trio of De La Soul dropped their classic debut album ‘3 Feet High & Rising’ on Tommy Boy Records. After an impressive debut on the album charts that year, Pos, Dave, and Mase made an appearance on Dutch television with a live performance & interview. It also appears that Monie Love is assisting during the performance Gotta love these classic clips from back in the day when they are unearthed. “The idea for the song came from a couple of samples, and the track’s vibe is earnest and has a pressing tone to it. The lyrics are commentaries of our struggles and successes, our weaknesses and strengths… the experiences… and trials and tribulations we have faced as human beings, a race, and as individuals. Lyrically Chuck brings a sense of authority and urgency. The power in his voice demands your attention. With Chuck on the track this is a dream come true for us.
Originally “The People†was suppose to drop in June around the same time the Chuck D/Hot 97/Peter Rosenberg situation took place. We chose to hold off and not add fuel to any fires. Our next aim was for a Black Friday release. Coincidentally the Ferguson tragedy took place, and more recently the non-indictment verdict. Somehow this song was destined to be a part of something more than just dropping a joint. We hope it will lend itself to something positive in these difficult times.” – De La Soul

Tre Mason, Son of ‘De La Soul’s Maseo, Is A Young Upcoming College Football Star (Video)

Ah… kids today… with their Waka Flocka music and their NCAA Division I football scholarships… and WHOOAAAA! That’s right! Tre Mason, Auburn University’s young return man and running back has definitely made his pop proud…on the field, at least… Hahaaa! See, the second-year Freshman really is a Waka Flocka fan; though his dad (DJ Maseo of the legendary group De La Soul) has caught him listening to some Golden Era Hip-Hop on occasion.
I caught commentary about Mason as Auburn won its nail-biter against Lousiana-Monroe last weekend. After the game, I searched the ‘Net and found articles and video (like that shared above) on the up-and-coming gridiron star. Good stuff. Keep it up, kid! Full disclosure: Though I do wish the best for young Tre, I cannot root for him every game week. You see, I am a two-time alum of The University of Alabama (Auburn’s cross-state rival). See you at the Iron Bowl, young Mason. Heh heh hehhh… Roll Tide!

This is a recap of the 5th Annual Roots Picnic on Philadephia’s festival pier at Penn’s Landing. On-stage acts riding with The Roots included De La Soul, Yasiin Bey, and Rakim! Certainly one of those you-had-to-be-there events, but this recap video gives you a good taste of what went down.
