The summer before my freshman year of high school my father helped me build a radio antenna for my Sony boombox. I found an article in Popular Mechanics (actually I ripped it out of the magazine in the Casey Jr. High library before graduating). Ben-jammin’ (as we called him) bought all of the parts and we built it to specifically tune to WZEN-FM in Alton (my birthplace). After a somewhat painstaking evening (Nick understands), it was complete and actually worked. I began tuning into Z-100 every evening catching Dr. Jockenstein and Captain G in the mix on the weekends. Jockenstein hosted the legendary Roll Call show and “Make it or Break It” (where I first heard “Beat Street”). This summer news of a Prince movie finally made its way to Southern Illinois and his current hit, “When Doves Cry” flooded the airwaves. Late one night while listening to Z-100, I caught a show talking about Prince and this library of great dance music he had been releasing for the past 5 years or so. The two deejays being interviewed put together what they called, “The Prince Master Mix.” Supposedly it was made on 4 turntables originally. I recorded the show and still have my original radio recording of the mix. I often recreated parts of it through the years “live” at parties/events. In 2013 I was saving old cassettes in mp3 format and came across it. I decided that I was going to finally “re-create” it and update it. I recorded all of the parts with turntables and then put the recorded parts together using a basic sound editing program. The end result is posted here.
