Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra (Album)

Frank Ocean is a part of the Odd Future collective that’s been getting plenty of attention as of late. I haven’t been too familiar with Odd Future‘s work to begin with so when a new project dropped by one of its members by the name of Frank Ocean I felt like I’d “eventually” get to it.  Didn’t really feel an urgency to check it out right away since I was already not familiar with the collective group’s catalog & it just seemed like unfamiliar fans were about to be bombarded with new material.  When a female friend of mine raved that I should check out Frank Ocean’s new mixtape/street album I decided to give it a spin while doing chores around the crib. I’m glad she put me on to this project because IT IS very good. The problem with the current R&B climate these days is there’s no vulnerability or truthfulness in the music & more often than not doesn’t take any chances.  The lack of genuine feeling in the music could be due to many R&B artists not penning & orchestrating the direction of their own songs.

Frank Ocean’s work feels very personal for it not to be his own heart & soul leaking from his pen. Frank Ocean’s ‘Nostalgia, Ultra’ does what traditional R&B is supposed to do & takes it a step further with some experimentation & genre bending that actually works although he’s at times rocking over a few readily familiar music beds. I believe that was a part of the concept in the first place based on the name of the project.  I’ve included a few tracks for you to check out & you can download the whole project from the main link below. Listen to this project & tell me I’m wrong.  There’s 14 tracks but 4 of them are interludes that connect to the next song.  If you love good music it will grab you right away….
