R&B / Soul: DJ Jazzy Jeff x Ayah – Back For More (Mixtape)

I’ve been struggling with how we label mixtapes & albums these days especially when running across quality projects like this Back For More album from DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Toronto songstress Ayah. This soulful R&B joint is so tight it feels unfair to label it a “mixtape” in anyway shape or form. It’s basically a free 13 track album that’s better than the majority of products in the marketplace for sale. Key songs I’ve been digging include “Back For More”, “Press Play”, “Notorious“, “One Life feat. Tona”, “Telephone“, & taking us to church with the gospel influenced sound of “Be Right“. I’ve been letting it play in my office several times & I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it. This is quality soul right here. Looking forward to seeing Ayah & the world famous DJ Jazzy Jeff tour just off this project alone….. Fatin – The Boondocks Backflips

Fatin worked along side 9th Wonder in creating the soundtrack to The Boondocks Season 2. Fatin is a member 9th’s Soul Council that produces a majority of the beats for his artists. This project is a mesh of tracks used for the soundtrack and unheard beats tagged with sound clips from the show.

I’m glad to see Teedra Moses drop a new mixtape now that she’s officially an artist on Rick Ross’s Maybach Music Group. A talented singer & songwriter of her caliber needs to get the type of publicity & looks that she deserves more than just penning hits for big names like Mary J. Blige & Raphael Saadiq. I still find myself bumping her first album Complex Simplicity while cruising the streets especially during the summer months. Seems like the suits at MMG wanted Teedra to bring more of that feeling by dropping this mixtape yesterday. Her first full length album ‘Lioness’ on MMG will drop sometime next year but this Luxurious Undergrind mixtape should hold true fans like us over. The complete tracklisting is under the hood…..

Dj Acrojam x Greedmont Park Presents: Hungry Hanz – ‘The Distraction Tape’ (Mixtape)

Atlanta heat is officially here and that means one thing, crazy mixtapes and projects are about to set sail into the vast sea we like to call the world wide web. Atlanta’s Greedmont Park joins forces with Augusta’s rising producer Hungry Hanz to release a blend of hard hitting, off kilter beats that would make Madlib proud and Kool Keith salivate.
“The Distraction Tape” is just that, a blend of instrumentals to help you get your mind off the madness of the week and into the world of Hungry Hanz. Augusta’s own, DJ Acrojam stays away from clichè id tags, yelling, and damn near annoying repetive “pull ups”,  allowing the listener to enjoy the tracks in their natural state. All of which have their own personality. “The Distraction Tape” is mixed into one large pool of sounds for your ears to swim in. Be on the look out for Hungry Hanz during his quest to raise eyebrows. R&B / Soul: Terri Walker – ‘Terri In Wonderland’ (Mixtape)

I can’t front & say that I’ve always been familiar with London born soul singer Terri Walker, but I do recall her working with Mos Def when she had an album released on Def Jam’s former Def Soul imprint. Terri has also worked with ill producer Ski Beatz in the past including putting her touch on his Camp Lo classic ‘Luchini’ production for her song ‘This Is My Time’.  Terri Walker continues to work that Ski Beatz magic by dropping this new mixtape ‘Terri In Wonderland.’ The mixtape doesn’t feature any hip hop artists with the exception of D.C’s. Tabi Bonney, but don’t get it twisted into thinking that this particular project is just another R&B singer wailing over hip hop beats. This ‘Terri In Wonderland’ goes in a variety directions which showcases Terri Walker’s influences in soul & true school hip hop but it also reflects her time growing up in the UK & Germany whose audiences musical palettes tend to span over a myriad of other genres. I can do without some of the unnecessary cursing on a track or two, but there are a few joints on here I liked. His music is everyday man, ladies man, street, lyrical, intelligent, club, & progressive all at once without coming off weak or too contrived. Creative. He seems to be able to repeatedly straddle those lines that the majority of artists just haven’t figured out how to pull off. Evidence’s free mixtape album inspired by the Beatles entitled ‘I Don’t Need Love’ was one of my favorite projects that dropped last year. It was not only very creative as an idea, but it just simply sounds dope from start to finish. I still run several tracks from it on the radio show like Because & Thinkn Bout Thinking. In this recent interview Ev talks about the free aforementioned mixtape album with the Beatles flips, his new upcoming album ‘Cats & Dogs’, DJ Premier working on a few tracks, & briefly touched on why his new album was taking a minute.
