Billy Barr just wanted to get out to the wilderness, read and drink tea. Done it for 40 years. Ooookay… but know what else he has been doing for 40 years? He recorded the snowfall amounts the whole time, giving scientists decades of data to study. So what does Billy’s data show? Empirical support that gives cause for concern for climate change. Welcome to Gothic, Colorado — one of the coldest places in the United States. This ghost town has been abandoned since the 1920s, but there is at least one person who still calls it home. For more than 40 years, current resident Billy Barr has lived in a small cabin, recording data about the snowpack to pass the time. In this short film, Morgan Heim of Day’s Edge Productions profiles the legendary local who inadvertently provided scientists with a treasure trove of climate change data.

David Bamberger Shows How He Brought Life Back To The Barren Texas Hill Country (Video)

Kind of cool. You know, in our posting about colonizing Mars we probably should be talking more about making the unlivable land inhabitable. Kind of like David is doing here. A bit easier to do on Earth, what with the breathable air, centuries of civilized existence, and access to society making inputs on the same planet. Still, David boldly went on his mission to make a natural paradise of the rough Texas Hill Country.
Almost 50 years ago, fried chicken tycoon David Bamberger used his fortune to purchase 5,500 acres of overgrazed land in the Texas Hill Country. Planting grasses to soak in rains and fill hillside aquifers, Bamberger devoted the rest of his life to restoring the degraded landscape. Today, the land has been restored to its original habitat and boasts enormous biodiversity. Bamberger’s model of land stewardship is now being replicated across the region and he is considered to be a visionary in land management and water conservation.
