So why don’t we start with some Facebook dopeness? Because when you gotta go to work for ‘the man’… that ain’t the man… YOU are the man (or woman)! Strut and stroll on in to this theme music from “Shaft” – delivered fresh, and soooo FUNKY, by the late great Isaac Hayes and his on-point orchestra.

Tall Black Guy – “Look Into The Wisdom” (A Tribute To Roy Ayers) [EP]

Detroit’s own TBG is all about the music. An expected corollary to that… he’s all about the dopest music makers in history. Like Roy Ayers – most defintely one of Jazz’s – American music’s – all time greats.

This ep is dedicated to the legendary Roy Ayers.

His music has touched many souls.

All of the messages in his music promote positivity, love, and peace.

Thank you Roy Ayers for inspiring me to go to greater heights with my own creativity.

NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series Presents: Freddie Gibbs & Madlib (Video)

I like this whiskey in my cup. We not givin’ a f**k…

‘Skinny Suge’ and Madlib make their way to the studio for a Tiny Desk concert. And everything is right with the world. Actually, it went a little left, starting jazzy then lyrics went HARD. But that makes things even ‘righter’ (haha)!

This Freddie Gibbs and Madlib Tiny Desk performance was a year in the making, largely because Madlib insisted on playing with El Michels Affair, a vintage funk and soul band based out of New York. But it was worth the wait. When pianist Marco Benevento opened with a delicate, almost jazzy run, it created the perfect opening — and juxtaposition — for hard-hitting emcee, Gibbs to jump in and ride the hell out of that beat.

Dead Horse Beats – “Easy Nothing”

They played this jawn on Nightwatch (the late night show that comes on the radio just before The Remix) and I had to call in to the station. He said his lady friend picked it. Good ear! By the way…

Dead Horse Beats’ new album “Inglaterra” is out worldwide.
Bastard Jazz

Just saying. So, yeah, I found the single stream AND the album, and I linked them below for you. You’re welcome.

NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert Series Presents: Erykah Badu (Video)

Robert Glasper did mention Erykah Badu in that last scorcher interview he did. Fellow Texan. And she is well beyond worthy on ‘honorable mention.’ See her Tiny Desk Concert performance for a reminder if you need one; or even if you don’t!

Erykah Badu is an artist for the ages. To old-school jazz fans like myself, names like Nina Simone, Betty Carter and Shirley Horn come to mind as much as Billie Holiday because of Badu’s singular approach to a lyric. They all cut their own creative path and left behind a legacy that you can identify with just one note. Erykah Badu is on that same path, and one day her name will be mentioned along with the other Elders who share her spirit of musical adventure.

Masego – “Lady Lady” (Prod. By Sounwave)

Masego with that jazzy soul you can bop right out to the floor to… to get your one-two step on to. And while you got your two-step going, your partner’s going, have the drinks flowing…

(May this be your Friday night, every night you need it to be. Enjoy, thoroughly!)

André 3000 – “Look Ma No Hands”

André Tré Stacks on bass clarinet with James Blake playing the piano. Vibe music. But still different than other Dré you’ve heard. Still keeping us listening and interested.

Dropped this extended play track on Mother’s Day, too, along with that “Me & My” song.

R+R=NOW – “Change Of Tone”

Acoustic jazzy musical dopeness in digital form with all the accouterments. Robert Glasper & Terrace Martin with all the accompaniments. Mr. Glasper on keys, Mr. Martin on synthesizer and vocoder (yep)… Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on trumpet, Derrick Hodge on bass, Taylor McFerrin on synth and beatbox (yep), and Justin Tyson on drums.

R+R stands for Reflect and Respond. When you reflect what’s going on in your time and respond to that, you can’t NOT be relevant. So ‘R’ plus ‘R’ equals ‘NOW.’

August Greene – “Optimistic” feat. Brandy

A better day tomorrow will bring.

Know what though? That better day can be today. Draw energy and inspiration from this jazzy “Optimistic” track by August Greene (featuring Brandy). Oh, by the way, for those not yet knowing, August Greene is actually a trio of artists – Common, Robert Glasper, and Karriem Riggins. Nice!

R&B: Musiq Soulchild – “Sooner Or Later”

A double album is always a risky bet for artists. High risk of overplaying your hand, as you are giving lots of music for a reasonable price, with the perception of higher ‘value.’ But often the result is a watered down product, or one with too many tracks between the ‘good’ joints.

Make your own judgments about what Musiq is trying to do with his double LP. But we know you will come to like at least one jawn… “Sooner Or Later”

Jazz/Soul: The Baylor Project – “Laugh And Move On” (Video)

You remember Zhané (pronounced Jah-Nay) from back in the day. Well, everybody… can get some more ‘groove your body’ music. But this is some super-warm, super-slow, squeeze-a-sweety and chill music. Jean Baylor got it done with her hubby Marcus. Awesome song and vid. Album out now (linked below).

Married musicians, vocalist Jean Baylor (formerly of the platinum-selling R&B duo Zhané) and Marcus Baylor, former drummer of the Grammy Award-winning Yellowjackets have created a captivating “project” that meets at the 3-way intersection of Jazz, Gospel and Legacy. Reminiscent of classic soul, “Laugh and Move On” speaks to the strength of the human spirit. No doubt, a very unique album that soothes the soul.

You already know the math: Phonte + Nicolay = The Foreign Exchange = Dope Music Every Time! And this time out is no exception. If you have checked out their latest project, you already know. If not, you already know you are in for a treat… when you play “Hide & Seek” (compilation LP)… in particular, that “Shelter” single. Nice!

Alternative: ALA.NI – “You & I” (Album)

Shout to the homie Jess! She hit us with the ALA.NI blessing. Vibe listening for your Sunday enjoyment. Thinking of filing this under Alternative Jazz, but there is something about this artist’s haunting melodies that defies categorization. Hearing a couple of songs on the “You & I” album that would have been right at home on the “Kill Bill” soundtrack though. Case in point: Listen to this “Cherry Blossom” and get a couple of Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 scenes in your head… fits, right?

Terrace Martin Presents The Pollyseeds – “Up & Away”

Another one from The Pollyseeds? Yes indeed. This is some good riding music; actually expected to hear an emcee start riding this track out of nowhere. Just has a smooth emcee’s feel. Maybe somebody will rap over a ‘remix’ or something. Still dope if they do or don’t. Check it out! You can pre-order “Sounds Of Crenshaw, Vol. 1” today.

Robert Glasper – “The Cross” feat. Lianne La Havas x Common

If Jesus died on the cross why I gotta carry it?
Common

Wow. The mark of good instrumentation… the levels to which it pushes accompanying vocalization. Like, just LISTEN to what that music Robert Glasper put down for “The Cross” pulls out of Lianne La Havas and Common. The singing. The lyrics!

Might have to watch that “Burning Sands” this weekend just because of this.

This song was written by Robert Glasper and Karriem Riggins, and Common for the film “Burning Sands” on Netflix now!
