When Def Jam decided to turn Frank Ocean’s dope R&B mixtape into an album for sale I was wondering how in the hell they were gonna clear all of those samples. Frank Ocean is a truly talented singer & songwriter whose talent in those areas shined through, but the music itself employs many familiar audio references. In the video above Frank not only talks about the sample clearance dilemma but also about his creative process. Better download the album while you can though….

I’ve been checking for this cat from Toronto since he dropped that impressive ‘House Of Balloons’ mixtape. This is one of the first leaks from his upcoming project entitled Thursday. This particular joint doesn’t hit me as much as ‘The Morning’ or the ‘What You Need’ songs, but we’ll see once he drops the whole mixtape. On a side note I’m wondering if we’re beginning to see a new trend with R&B artists using “The” in front of their names like ‘The-Dream’ etc etc…..Most rappers use “Lil’, “Young”, so I hope “The” doesn’t become a trend on the R&B front.

Atlanta’s Greedmont Park joins forces with Augusta’s rising producer Hungry Hanz to release a blend of hard hitting, off kilter beats that would make Madlib proud and Kool Keith salivate.
“The Distraction Tape” is just that, a blend of instrumentals to help you get your mind off the madness of the week and into the world of Hungry Hanz. Augusta’s own, DJ Acrojam stays away from clichè id tags, yelling, and damn near annoying repetive “pull ups”,  allowing the listener to enjoy the tracks in their natural state. All of which have their own personality. “The Distraction Tape” is mixed into one large pool of sounds for your ears to swim in. Be on the look out for Hungry Hanz during his quest to raise eyebrows. Freddie Gibbs & Statik Selektah Plan To Record Album In 24 Hours

New CTE (Jeezy’s Corporate Thugz Entertainment) signee Freddie Gibbs studio album has been pushed back or shelved but he is still working on new music as he preps for the latest Statik Selektah 24-hour project following in the footsteps of Saigon and Freeway who also did 24 hour projects with Statik. The Indiana rapper’s project will be called Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away and will be recorded June 24th at Statik Selektah’s home studio in Brooklyn and released 2 days later on the 24th. The recording process will be broadcast live on Ustream is what Statik told his followers from his twitter after he heard Gibbs telling folks he had a mixtape in the works. This should be really dope if its anything like the last few Statik Selektah projects.

The Apple store in Atlanta’s Lenox Mall is like a crackhouse to me. I own most of the products they sell there but I always find myself going inside & looking around. Sometimes spending more than an hour in there. To celebrate Black Music Month, Apple had Big K.R.I.T. come through for an in-store performance which brought out more hip hop heads & Apple addicts alike.

I’m not too familiar with Cali’s Rocky Rivera but when I ran across this video of her rhyming over J Dilla’s ‘F*ck The Police’ instrumental I immediately could tell she was grounded in true school hip hop & I was sort of impressed at her flow. She’s definitely a cutie but being able to flow well over a J Dilla joint sold me that she’s another rising female emcee to watch & not just another cute face wasting space….
