R&B: Donell Jones – “Forever”

Chicago’s Donell Jones is back at it again with that REAL R&B music. This is the title track for his upcoming album entitled “Forever” due in May. Judging from the sounds of this joint I’d say Donell is still in great shape musically by bringing nothing but that real R&B instead of switching things up with ‘Trap & B’ or some other musical flavor of the month. This is some true school ‘cruising in the whip late at night’ type of music right here….

Soul singer Raheem DeVaughn is back with another one of his ‘Radio Raheem Remixes’ of songs that he continues to make greater when he adds his own personal touch to it. This time he does justice to Alicia Keys & Maxwell’s collaboration the ‘Fire We Make’ record. Radio Rah is doing a great job in providing these musical appetizers before the upcoming release of his ‘A Place Called Loveland’ project later this year.

Like most people that enjoy quality music, Miguel’s stellar “Do You…” track is one of my favorites from his “Kaleidoscope Dream“ album out that’s out now & up for a Grammy award for Best Urban Contemporary album. The production duo “The ReFix Kingz” (Edley Shine & DJ JButtah) add a very excellent reggae flavored dynamic with their remix featuring Atlanta based R&B singer Sammie. This is hot. The legendary Isaac Hayes was the subject of TV One’s popular television series “Unsung” last Wednesday night & the show didn’t disappoint in covering the life of one of the greatest icons in black music. The influence & contributions of Isaac Hayes goes deeper than just the music as he was not only a singer, songwriter, musician & producer, but he was an actor & activist as well. Isaac Hayes’ music has also been sampled by countless numbers of hip hop & R&B artists many times over further keeping his legacy alive. Dawn Richard is criminally slept-on & many people around the world need to wake the hell up. I’ve been singing the praises of this talented woman for a while now. This “86” record that we posted back in October has been in my personal rotation of hot joints in my itunes playlists that I often keep on repeat. When I first heard it I played it back about 10 times in a row. Clearly I was in need of some more joints of that quality. After a few delays her new album “GoldenHeart” , which features this very dope “86” joint just dropped . R&B/Alternative: Willow Smith – “Sugar & Spice”

When I saw a 1 or 2 people tweet about Willow Smith’s new song “Sugar & Spice” I immediately dismissed it thinking it was some bubble gum pop song from the 12-year-old daughter of Will & Jada. When I finally got around to hearing it I was deeply surprised for a variety of reasons. For one I realized the music she chose as her backdrop comes from one of my favorite Radiohead songs off of their 2011 “King Of Limbs” album called “Codex”. The second thing that was glaringly apparent was the writing, lyrics, & vocal arrangement was perfect & it felt deeply personal. The third thing running through my mind had me asking myself if this little 12-year-old girl is crying out for help. Deep.
