R&B: Dawn Richard – ’86

Dope song! Dawn Richard (formerly of Diddy’s Dirty Money) is underrated as hell as an artist…and that’s a damn shame. Damn near a crime. Creative videos, excellent choreography, elaborate costumes, precision sharp dance routines, & most importantly music that touches your soul. Well, we the JayForce.com do-gooders – posters of good music and more – are here to “’86” that nonsense. Dawn’s jam “’86” (produced by Druski) is yet another beautiful example of what modern R&B/Soul/Pop is supposed to sound like. Not surprisingly the song has an early Prince feel to it in terms of its musical flavor & songwriting so it seems intentional for Dawn to name it “86” as a nod to those subtle references & dual meanings. This is the first single from Dawn’s forthcoming album, “GoldenHeart” (due out October 16, 2012). For now, you can stream to “’86” below and buy the single at iTunes.

Phonte feat. Carlitta Durand – “Gonna Be A Beautiful Night” (Video)

North Carolina emcee, singer, & occasional comedian Phonte drops some brand new visuals as promised at 12noon today for “Gonna Be A Beautiful Night” featuring Carlitta Durand.  The track produced by S1 & Caleb appears on his critically acclaimed “Charity Starts At Home” album that’s available now.  The album was easily one of the best projects to have dropped late 2011.  Its not too late, but I hope Phonte keeps the dope visuals by their go-to-director Kenneth Price coming from the project.

R&B: Elle Varner – “I Don’t Care” (Video)

Elle Varner’s superbly good “I Don’t Care” is such a dope song I even played it a few times on my hip hop radio show The Beatz & Lyrics Show on Saturday nights. Good choice to shoot a video for this standout track from her debut album “Perfectly Imperfect” that’s available now. Astute hip hop heads & connoisseurs will instantly recognize the sample used in the track is the same one flipped by Brooklyn rapper AZ for his classic song “Ho Happy Jackie” off of his 1995 album “Doe Or Die” years ago.

R&B/Soul: DJ Kemit – “Fortune Teller” feat. Eric Roberson (Video)

New video from the homie (and all around super-dope producer and deejay) DJ Kemit. It’s a soulful banger! Watch for the cool guest appearances. I know I saw DJ Rasta Root, DJ Salah Anase, and model/singer Linda Pearl in there. Nice. Equally as nice…the silky smooth assist from crooner Eric Roberson on this joint. Respect to director Jirard (of the Digibees) and producer Aishah Rashied Hyman on this one, too. The track “Fortune Teller” appears on DJ Kemit’s new album “Everlasting” that’s available now!

R&B/Alternative: I/O (Ayo Olatunji) – “You Slay Me”

Singer/songwriter/producer/instrumentalist Ayo Olatunji (better known as I/O) is the grandson of Grammy Award-Winning Nigerian drummer, educator, social activist and recording artist, Babatunde Olatunji. I/O puts down his own flavor of soul mixed with Hip-Hop – or ‘new soul wave’ (shout out to Butta at SoulBounce) – on a hot track called “You Slay Me.” Drawing comparisons to the likes of Frank Ocean and Miguel, I/O is bringing a new kind of R&B – laced with more electronic influences than traditional soul/R&B. In case your just getting up on this talent like we are, his “Isolation” mixtape he dropped about a month ago features some quality work as well. Download “You Slay Me” for FREE here, and experience I/O for yourself.
