R.I.P. James Hood, First Black Man to Enroll at The University of Alabama (Video)
I just learned that an often under-recognized civil rights figure has passed. My eternal respect and thanks to you, Mr. James Hood. Because of the courageous steps you and Vivian Malone took into Foster Auditorium long ago, I was allowed to walk the halls and earn two degrees from The University of Alabama decades later. Many of those young men who took the field to reclaim the NCAA Football Championship this year owe their right to do so to you and a faithful few who saw the battle for our civil rights through in those tough times.
R.I.P. Mr. Hood. Roll Tide!

Biggie’s Daughter T’yanna Wallace Revists Her Father’s Old Brooklyn Neighborhood (Video)
Global Grind TV interviews with the Biggie’s (aka Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace) eldest child. She is now a student at Penn State University; into fashion…NOT rap. That’s okay though, as she clearly has her own lane and seems comfortable in her skin. On a tour of Poppa’s old stomping grounds, the clip above celebrates B.I.G.’s life and impact on Hip-Hop and folks in it… while giving us a good look at T’yanna and her future outlook. Good feel good video.
New Trailer for the Jackie Robinson Movie ’42’ (Video)
We posted the first trailer for the movie ’42’ a while ago. In this new trailer they give us a teaser of a several additional scenes from the upcoming film. The movie relates the life story of Jackie Robinson (#42), team executive Branch Rickey, and making history – with #42 signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers (and crossing the color line in pro sports). Here’s the 2nd official trailer.
The Underbelly Project Takes Artists Beneath New York City (Video)
In 2009, the Underbelly Project started with some artists who found a long-forgotten and unfinished NYC subway station stop. Working throughout the year that followed, to make their find an underground gallery and creative space, the artists produced an exhibit of contemporary art that would not likely be seen by many… were it not for the video above.

Talib Kweli Speaks on ‘Django Unchained’, Use of the N-Word, Popping ‘Molly’, Assisting Kanye’s Career, Black Star & More (Video)
Talib Kweli stopped by NYC’s Hot 97 & gave a very good interview on a variety of topics including his opinion of Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’ film & the heavy use of the word “N*gger” in the film. Kweli also discussed the recent trend of rappers talking about popping “Molly” in their music, assisting Kanye West’s early career & witnessing the level he’s climbed to now, his feelings on the legendary rap duo Outkast, & reuniting with his partner Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) for another Black Star album. This was a really good interview & discussion that took place that managed to include many of the topics everyone has been talking about as of late. They covered so much ground that Talib Kweli may have even forgot to mention he has an album “Prisoner Of Conscious” on the way. You should sit back & enjoy it for about 20 minutes…..

REKS – “Ahead Of My Time” feat. C-Scharp (Prod. by ATG)
REKS is starting this new year off harsh… with select words and shots for backstabbers who pose as friends. REKS’ forthcoming mixtape – “Revolution Cocktail†– is due out on iTunes January 22, 2013. This first leak, “Ahead of My Time” (produced by ATG), features C-Scharp.
R&B: Phil Beaudreau – “Anyway”
Los Angeles crooner Phil Beaudreau lets go of something smooth – a track titled “Anyway†– that will likely appear as an interlude on his forthcoming “Ether” EP. This joint produced by Dawuan Parker sounds very good….
Behind The Scenes: 50 Cent – “Major Distribution” Video Shoot (Video)
50 Cent and Young Jeezy behind the scenes at the “Major Distribution” video shoot. According to a follow-up comment, Snoop makes an appearance… after coming down from a high-high. Seriously though… I’ve seen a million & one trailers for music videos & behind the scenes clips, but this was was very well put together. Big up to the director for having some creative vision.
Young Guru Speaks On Piracy vs. Invention in Hip-Hop (Video)
Young Guru has mixed most of Jay-Z’s albums over the years. He has been Jay-Z’s tour D.J. for years. Safe to say he knows a thing or two about Hip-Hop. Well, the NY Hip-Hop aficionado goes in-depth on the thin line between piracy and invention in the genre.
“When we study hip-hop we are actually studying the history of piracy. If we go back and study all piracy, we see that most things that were created in the world are a remix of something else.â€
– Young Guru
Now, don’t let that quote make you defensive Hip-Hop heads. Watch as Young Guru takes us on a journey of modern human history referencing the history of Hip-Hop to show how our ‘remixing’ things in industry over time is good for all overall… we just have to address some tough questions of who owns what, who should should get paid, what we consider ‘piracy’ (versus ‘new creation’) and more. Very interesting.
It has been said that ‘there is nothing new under the sun.’ Play the video clip above, and watch more after the jump, to get Young Guru’s application of that in the study of Hip-Hop.
The World’s Most Wanted List: “Island Boy Cartel” (Video)

Dice Raw – “Somebody Loves You” feat. Raheem DeVaughn (Video)
Nice. Dice Raw has a mixtape coming this year. The video for “Somebody Loves You” featuring Raheem DeVaughn is a good start to whet appetites for what’s coming. And the honey Aisha Thalia is easy to love in this vid.
Raekwon – “Came Up” (Video)
Raekwon launches the first official video from his free “Lost Jewlry” EP with this Scram Jones produced joint “Came Up”. The black & white video interpolates classic gangsta footage from the St. Valentine’s Day massacre while the big boss Raekwon gets fly with the lyricism & then slides off in his luxury vehicle.

Notorious B.I.G. – White Chalk Pt. 2 (Unreleased Reference Track)
There’s a rare unreleased Notorious B.I.G. verse flying around at the speed of the Internet. Listen to it below. Where did it come from? Why is it only surfacing now? The audio tags more than suggest it was for a DJ Capone mixtape. Beyond that, the rest is a guess.
UPDATE: Apparently it’s an old Junior Mafia reference track called “White Chalk Pt. 2”
