Slum Village – “Yes Yes”

artworks-000070107451-13gqkh-t500x500J Dilla would have been 40 years old today February 7th. As people around the world celebrate the greatness of the Detroit producer & emcee James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla, his brother Illa J & the remaining members of Slum Village (T3 & Young RJ), let loose this joint appropriately titled ‘Yes Yes’. ‘Yes Yes’ is fitting as fans are happy to know Slum Village has a new album coming featuring more J Dilla production from the period when he was going by the name Jay Dee. Black Milk & Young RJ are also expected to provide some musical soundscapes as well. Rest in Peace J Dilla Dawg!

Phife Dawg – “Dear Dilla” (Produced By DJ Rasta Root)

artworks-000068052400-zr878a-t500x500When Phife Dawg & DJ Rasta Root let me hear this song ‘Dear Dilla’ honoring the late great Detroit emcee & producer J Dilla a short time back I immediately knew it was something special.  The DJ Rasta Root produced track provides the perfect soundscape for such an emotional, heartfelt, & sonically superb song.

#dearDilla is an open letter to Phife’s long time friend and producer, the legendary J Dilla (James Dewitt Yancey), who passed away on 2006 from complications of a rare blood disorder.

Just wait until y’all see the video directed by Chicago filmmaker Konee Rok that’s about to drop soon.  Trust me it’s a very dope clip featuring cameos from Dwele, Uncle Herm, T3, & more.  If you live in Atlanta the #dearDilla video will premier February 6th at the Midtown Art Cinema from 7:30pm-9:30pm with a Q&A hosted my yours truly & it will also premier at Dilla Day in Detroit on February 7th at the Fillmore. This is also the first official single to Phife Dawg’s upcoming album ‘MUTTYmorPHosis’ due later this year.

House Shoes Breaks Down J Dilla – “Feelin Good”

Bling47 brings us a super rare Slum Village/ J Dilla treat. Previously unreleased music. By unreleased, we mean aside from a handful of folks (most at Slum Village shows in the 1990s), NO ONE has experienced it. As our guide, Detroit producer House Shoes takes us through the music in this video Bling47 calls “Feelin Good” (filmed, edited, and animated by Waajeed)…referencing a rare J Dilla cover of “Feelin Good” (a song made famous by Nina Simone).

J Dilla – “Rebirth Is Necessary” feat. Tone Plummer x Mr Wrong (Video)

The “Rebirth Of Detroit” by the late Detroit great J Dilla is IN STORES NOW (available at FatBeats). This video for his cut “Rebirth Is Necessary” (featuring Tone Plummer and Mr. Wrong) has a rough look to it. But listening to the song, it feels right. Points to Ron Moe and Dirtty Ratt (of Ghosttown Entertainment) for the shot selections, and Rowe Shot Me for the edit, and for keeping the look grimy while embodying a sense of urgency…in keeping with the gritty feel and duress inherent in the song. Respect!

Apani B. Fly – “Hey” (Prod. J Dilla)

Apani B. Fly has an incredible Dilla dilemma! Apani heat… like this joint “Hey”… was born of… to be heard by… the streets! However, likely due to politics and economics, the song was never released, and will not likely ever be released… commercially. But nowadays NOTHING can stop a virtual (e.g. online) release. And when the piece is this sweet, everybody ought to get a slice at no price! Wow. Before I go too much more Nipsey Russell in this write-up, let’s just end it. Go listen to the UNRELEASED treat “Hey”  by Apani B. Fly – produced by the Late Great J Dilla now!
