Science: Harvard Researchers Have Turned Hydrogen Into Metal (Video)

So this BoneBreaker Jones (aka my brother, Karl) post showed up on my Facebook wall (because, you know, family) that proves that, without a doubt, he is a nerd.

Yep. He’s definitely a classic “Revenge Of The Nerds” pocket-protector-and-taped-eyeglasses-wearing NERRRD! Hahahaaaa!

But he is cool with that, and he is cool with me (and vice versa). That said, what he shared was so incredible I had to Google around for corroboration (’cause I’m #NerdyAndProud too). And the news is all over the interwebs. Researchers at Harvard University have created a metal that could lead to way cheaper and more efficient superconductor applications – quantum leaps in medical technology (like MRI machines) and in transportation tech (like high-speed super-trains). This metallic hydrogen could even be used to drastically improve our power grids and help power deep space exploration!

This is the holy grail of high-pressure physics. It’s the first-ever sample of metallic hydrogen on Earth, so when you’re looking at it, you’re looking at something that’s never existed before.
Isaac F. Silvera, Lead Researcher at Harvard University

In a word…SCIENCE! But we still must remain calm. There is a LOT of testing and research yet to be done. It took 80 years of applied research effort to get this far. Like any journey, it takes time and drive to arrive at the destination. But this is a HUGE sign that we are on the right track.

Science/Technology: Scientists Use Gold And Rat Parts To Make A Remote-Controlled Artificial Stingray (Video)

Yeeeeesh! That looks creepy as f-ck! But a team of scientists at Harvard creating this artificial stingray out of rat parts (again, yeesh) and a pinch of gold is actually part of the team’s ongoing research on how to make artificial organs. This admittedly weird biotech is remote-controlled; able to be moved about in a tank using light beams.

9th Wonder At Harvard: “The Hip-Hop Fellow” (Trailer)

Slated for release next month, “The Hip-Hop Fellow” is a feature-length film documenting super-producer 9th Wonder’s time as a Harvard University professor, teaching “The Breaks” to a bunch of students of the Cambridge (Massachusetts) institution. 9th Wonder’s contribution is an awesome complement to Harvard’s Hip-Hop Archive (see our post on Nas being honored there). Each and together these are a blessing to the campus community and the world.

The trailer captures commentary and cosigns by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Young Guru, Pete Rock, DJ Premier and more. This documentary is going to be a “don’t miss” to be certain. Watch.

He has the love for it. He has the drive for it. It’s always been in him. He’s the genius behind it. You know, it’s only right.

Technology: Scientists at Harvard And M.I.T. May Have Actually Invented A ‘Star Wars’ LightSaber? (Video)

Get ’em, Yoda! Gotta love Star Wars’ lightsaber duels…

If I haven’t said it on here before, I will say it now: If you want an imaginary something made real, get the sci-geeks excited about it. They will get right on making it real. Case in point: MIT and Harvard have a method to herd photons (understood to have no real mass) and have them bind together. The resultant new type of matter, photonic matter, would essentially the beam that would be the blade of a lightsaber (like in the ‘Star Wars‘ movie). We’re not there yet, but this is a big first step! Read all about it by clicking the link below.
