Oddisee x Phonte – “Requiem”

“I got the blues; and I watch the news. Like, n!gga what the f#ck I’m supposed to tell my kids?”

Jazzy bluesy bap joint “Requiem” is from the forthcoming Mello Music Group compilation album “Persona” (due out March 10, 2015; but you can hit the pre-order link below). Of course, Oddisee is on the beat (double duty). Here’s more.

Persona unveils the murderer’s row that is the Mello roster of 2015. Oddisee, Apollo Brown, yU, L’Orange, Red Pill, Open Mike Eagle, Rapper Big Pooh, Quelle Chris. The stars of the present teamed with timeless innovators like Phonte (Little Brother), Blockhead, Ras Kass, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), Oh No, Masta Ace, and Bilal Salaam. The result is something that binds current greats with the pioneers who paved the asphalt. It’s both a historical moment and hard as hell.

If most compilations are nothing more than a loosely thrown together collection of songs, Persona boasts meticulous focus. These aren’t spare tracks, they’re potent messages and poisonous darts. “Requiem” finds Phonte and Oddisee indicting American racism and Xenophobia with fury and precision…

Pardon The Interruption: DJ Premier x Royce Da 5’9 Crashes Phonte’s ‘PRhyme’-Time Interview (Video)

You plan for the unexpected as best you can, and it still happens. But if you are lucky, that’s a good thing!

PRhyme, also known as DJ Premier and Royce Da 5’9,” made their way into the STASHED studio as we were interviewing Phonte. Rather than having them wait, the three old friends all joined in one long conversation. Among the topic discussed include their history together, being grown men in Hip-Hop, and possibly working together on a new project.

It’s a happy half-hour of eavesdropping you will gladly spend with Phonte (Phontigallo-tigallo-tigallo), DJ Premier and Royce Da 5’9…if you simply click play above.

Phonte And Nicolay Recorded The First ‘Foreign Exchange’ Album Before They Ever Actually Met (Video)

This is the short that’ll fill in all the blanks (if you have any) about your understanding of the story of Foreign Exchange. Phonte and Nicolay tell a compelling story of a chance meeting on a message board that grew into a musical bond that produced a Grammy nomination and what will likely be a life of artistic fulfillment. Great stuff! Watch.

The single bundle is available for purchase on iTunes now and includes the Black Coffee Remix of “We Are On The Move” feat. Talib Kweli, Elzhi, & Phonte – “No Competition” (Prod. By Khrysis)

No-Competition-450x450You can’t go wrong with these four individuals all on one track. The superior lyricism of Phonte, Elzhi, & Talib Kweli coupled with an ill beat from Khrysis makes this joint nothing but strait fiyah.  I can’t wait to play this on my radio show Saturday night.  This brand new banger is off of the upcoming ‘Jamla Is The Squad’ compilation that’s dropping on January 28th.

R&B: Zo! – “We Are On The Move” feat. Eric Roberson x Phonte (Video)

Ha! ‘Old school players to new school fools!’ OutKast might’ve had something like this in mind with that lyric. Zo! got with some buddies and got to clowning on this Whispers inspired video. The track is dope, but they really seemed to have fun with visuals brought to you by director Kenneth Price. “We Are On The Move” (featuring Eric Roberson and Phonte) is another banger off the “ManMade” LP.

Jazz keyboardist Robert Glasper teamed with soul songstree Erykah Badu on a jazzy cut to show that Houston is definitely in the house! Well, why not bring in 9th Wonder to remix it and Phonte to bless it with a lyric… you know, to drop some North Carolina flavor on it? Okay DONE! Here is the result: a smooth Hip-Hop redux of the song by Glasper and Badu. Phonte feat. Carlitta Durand – “Gonna Be A Beautiful Night” (Video)

North Carolina emcee, singer, & occasional comedian Phonte drops some brand new visuals as promised at 12noon today for “Gonna Be A Beautiful Night” featuring Carlitta Durand.  The track produced by S1 & Caleb appears on his critically acclaimed “Charity Starts At Home” album that’s available now.  The album was easily one of the best projects to have dropped late 2011.  Its not too late, but I hope Phonte keeps the dope visuals by their go-to-director Kenneth Price coming from the project.

9th Wonder & Phonte Rock Brazil (Video)

Brasil is one of my favorite countries I’ve ever visited in my life (several times over) from the beautiful women, landscape, art, culture, & the music. Astute music heads in Brasil stopped into the Mary Pop club in Sao’ Paulo to become a part of the madness as Phonte & 9th Wonder rocked on stage & they were truly “Lovin It”.

Phonte – “The Life Of Kings” feat. Evidence & Big K.R.I.T. (Video)

Phonte drops a brand new video from one of my favorite songs from his “Charity Starts At Home” album that’s out now. If you paid attention to this website regularly you’d see we’ve been rocking that ‘Life Of Kings’ phrase in the masthead area of the site for a while now. The usual suspects of Kenneth Price in the director’s chair & 9th Wonder on the production of the track itself are involved, but when you add in Evidence Phonte’s Mama & Big K.R.I.T. you can’t go wrong. By far one of my favorite hip hop songs in recent years….Niiiiiiice.

9th Wonder x J. Cole Speak on North Carolina’s Hip Hop Scene (Video)

9th Wonder & J. Cole, both natives of North Carolina, appeared on the University of North Carolina’s public access television channel UNCTV to speak on their careers & the hip hop scene in the Tarheel state.  North Carolina emcees Phonte & King Mez also make brief appearances in the clip as well….

Phonte Reviews ‘Red Tails’ For his ‘Movie In A Minute’ Series (Video)

I went to see the movie “Red Tails” because I believe it’s a very important film not just for African Americans, but for all Americans in knowing more about the history & sacrifices made by the Tuskeegee Airmen who the film is largely based upon. Phonte continues his “Movie In A Minute” film review for 2012 with his thoughts on Red Tails that hit theaters last friday January 20th. I agree with Phonte’s commentary 100% in this clip. His thoughts are exactly what I was thinking after catching the movie over the weekend. I purposely didn’t say anything on twitter, because I didn’t want to influence anyone NOT to see the film. I expected more, but still understood the importance of the film & for people to go & support it.

Phonte – Dance in the Reign (Video)

Phonte drops the first video from his Charity Starts at Home LP. Definitely one of the best albums to have dropped in 2011. Just wish he didn’t wait so long to release the first video though…

The Roots – ‘One Time’ featuring Phonte & Dice Raw

This new Roots project has the makings of a classic piece work. All of the leaks have been really dope and this one is no exception. One more dope collab for the project down with Phonte and Dice Raw checking in on this one.
