Technology: Dr. George Church Brings Stephen Colbert 20 Million Copies of His Book (Video)

Molecular geneticist George Church shares his book, “Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves,” on the Colbert Report. Significant achievements George discussed with Stephen Colbert include making petroleum using scientifically-engineered bacteria and the invention of a mega data storage method using DNA-based coding. So, one day we’ll be ‘making our own oil’ (instead of waiting on discoveries of pools of dead dinosaur matter). And soon we’ll be storing computer servers full of data in a space no bigger than your thumb print. Incredible stuff! Worth the watch.

House Shoes Breaks Down J Dilla – “Feelin Good”

Bling47 brings us a super rare Slum Village/ J Dilla treat. Previously unreleased music. By unreleased, we mean aside from a handful of folks (most at Slum Village shows in the 1990s), NO ONE has experienced it. As our guide, Detroit producer House Shoes takes us through the music in this video Bling47 calls “Feelin Good” (filmed, edited, and animated by Waajeed)…referencing a rare J Dilla cover of “Feelin Good” (a song made famous by Nina Simone).

Comedy: Stephen Colbert Examines How ‘Body Language’ Is Important In The U.S. Presidential Debate (Video)

Stephen Colbert kills me! Comedy Central’s resident “conservative” declares that while United States Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney ‘distance[d] himself from everything he said on the campaign trail’… ‘it worked, so f##k it!’ Hahahaaaaa! But there were more important criteria than stuff like ‘facts’ or ‘consistency’ on which we should judge debate performance (says Colbert). We should be looking at Romney’s and President Barack Obama’s body language. So, in this clip, we do. Hilarious stuff. Can’t wait until the U.S. Vice Presidential debate and the other Presidential debates for more serious stuff. But for now… more laughter. Click play above. You’ll see…

Rapper Big Pooh – “Friends”

North Carolina emcee Rapper Big Pooh just dropped this very dope banger produced by Astronote. The European based producer Astronote has been on my radar for a minute after crafting some very dope soundscapes in the last year or so. This joint is the perfect backdrop for Rapper Big Pooh to lament on the people we all call “Friends”. How many of us have them right? Sounds like a few shots being aimed at some of his former friends that he doesn’t exactly name in the track. This banger will appear on Rapper Big Pooh’s upcoming project Fat Boy Fresh Volume 2 due to drop November 20th….

John Robinson x PVD – “Miles & Trane”

Veteran emcee John Robinson (aka Lil Sci of Scienz of Life) and beatman PVD have been rocking crowds together for years. On this track, PVD’s jazz-influenced breaks and Robinson’s intelligent wordplay combine for a sure-fire hit… and a great limited-edition 45 rpm 7″ record! “Miles & Trane” not only pays homage to two of the greats (Miles Davis and John Coltrane, pictured above), it uniquely reps real Hip-Hop in a way that is so needed right now! Enjoy.

The Collective: Agents To The ‘YouTube’ Stars

Well, it had to happen. As a medium of its own, the Internet – specifically YouTube – has generated its own stars. They are like TV and movie celebrities, but they are not borne of the big or small screen. Heck, look no further than this site for examples of such celebs. We spotlight Internet-grown stars like Narduwar all the time.

But you know what stars need when they get ‘big’ enough, right? Agents! And now, the big names on the ‘Net have one. Los Angeles entertainment industry vet Michael Green founded The Collective in 2005 – the same year YouTube was started – ‘to capitalize on the shifting entertainment landscape…by teaming with artists…who he believes are well positioned to capitalize on the decentralization of media consumption.’ Green presumed (rightly) that as consumers in greater and greater numbers watched less TV and attended fewer movies shown in theaters, opting more for Internet-based entertainment, that new stars would emerge… stars who were not being represented by traditional talent agencies. Having already represented and handled administrative duties for the likes of the Backstreet Boys and Snoop Dogg, Green has set up The Collective to manage the careers of Internet icons who have reached (or have the potential to reach) the six-figure income level by themselves. Taking them on as clients then frees them to continue pushing the limits of their creativity (which is what made them stars in the first place). Meanwhile The Collective handles mundane matters like fee negotiations, legal matters and other paperwork. It’s win-win. Here’s how.

Comedic musician team Rhett & Link, once overwhelmed by huge marketing contract proposals from General Motors and McDonald’s, certainly appreciated (and were happy to pay for) The Collective’s help. Another client, Annoying Orange, created by indie filmmaker Dane Boedigheimer, now has its own Cartoon Network show with 2.5 million subscribers. That’s an Internet entertainer… doing “TV numbers”… on YouTube… insane! Bet there is some insane money involved on the back end for The Collective, too.

Best believe that this business model is here to stay, too. The Interactive Advertising Bureau has tracked growth of brand spending in digital video from $324 million in 2007 to $1.8 billion in 2011. That’s right: Digital video brand spending more than quadrupled its 2007 figure in the course of four years! And for a fraction of the money it takes to develop and launch TV ad campaigns, brand companies get their names and messages out to masses of young, loyal viewers they hope to convert to consumers. Moreover, Internet ads are becoming more sophisticated (e.g. companies like Rhett & Link and their competitors are stepping up their game); so the digital video advertising business can be expected to intensify and grow… and The Collective will be right there to get its share of a pie that is getting bigger and bigger.

Jon Stewart to President Obama via ‘The Daily Show’: Wake Up! (Video)

Okay, so President Obama did NOT have his best showing at the first of the 2012 Presidential Debates. Sure, moderator Jim Lehrer could have been more assertive – to wrest control of the event back from Mitt Romney (who was obviously the most confident and aggressive on stage) AND from the President. Yes, yes… all true… unfortunately. But that doesn’t mean that we cannot count on Jon Stewart to help us laugh about it. Be clear though: As Jon is so skilled at doing, he makes a serious point in the midst of his comical barrage. He made it directly to the President in his own Samuel Jackson-ish” way… He… well, just watch.

MarQ Spekt feat. Meyhem Lauren x FT (Fuc That) x School of Sharks – “Danger” (Prod. by Kno) [Video]

Get the feeling that this video was shot ‘dark’ for a reason. The rhyme content for “Danger” is dark, as is its video’s scene selection. Gutter! If you enjoyed that Mobb Deep feel when the Mobb was the Mobb… get into this video. Yeah. MarQ Spekt song “Danger” features production from Kno (of Cunninlynguists) and lyrics from Meyhem Lauren, FT (Fuc That), and School of Sharks. Statik Selektah x Termanology (1982) – “Lights Down” (Video)

Finally, we get a video for this dope song! “Lights Down” was a hit we posted about on here earlier from this Lawrence Mass to Boston-based duo 1982 (Statik Selektah and Termanology). It is worth mentioning, however, that the audio we posted earlier had a feature from Mississippi emcee Big K.R.I.T. Not sure if there is anything to his absence from the track; but we won’t waste mind or web space on speculation. Good news is that you can enjoy the video here and go listen to “Lights Down” version we posted at the link below. Best of both worlds. Bonus: You can also get the album “2012” now (FREE via the link below).
