Olivia – “Souljah Girl” feat. Mavado

This is a quality song from R&B singer Olivia I saw in my email inbox the other day, but I just didn’t get around to listening to it until now. This “Souljah Girl” track has a breezy island feel & you can’t go wrong with a Mavado feature. The only negative thing I found about this song for Olivia, who’s now signed to Wonda Music, is that Mavado’s unique vocal presence makes it seem like she’s the “featured” artist. I’m not mad at the song at all but for an R&B singer who was formerly signed to 50 Cent’s G-Unit, Olivia’s gonna need a pure R&B or Hip Hop flavored hit to keep her doubters who only know her from the “Love & Hip Hop” reality show quiet.  I don’t know anything about her personality because I refuse to watch those black female based reality shows, but I often see many people on twitter sling hate her way.  Sometimes those shows can be counterproductive for an artist, but if she consistently brings good music to the table then that’s all that matters to me.

The video and song speaks to those who are on their everyday hustle chasing their dreams and a better life. The video is shot and directed by Cam Kirk. B. Yale’s “Long Live Jay Dee” tribute EP to J. Cocaine 80s – “Chain Glow” feat. Nas

Cocaine 80s has been been hitting us with more ‘no look passes’ than Lebron James in the past few days with the release of “Queen To Be”, “This Can’t Be A Crime”, & “Take My Keys” all in the last few days. I’d bet no one saw this one coming at all as Nas links up with NO I.D.’s musical clan for this new “Chain Glow” jawn.  Common is the only rapper in the group Cocaine 80s so this is truly a special guest appearance & ‘no look pass’ to the fans from the Cocaine 80s team.

Blu – “Kiss The Sky” feat. Mela Machinko [Prod. By M-Phazes]

West Coast emcee Blu is rather erratic with how he releases projects it seems, but when he does it’s usually quality.  This new joint called “Kiss The Sky” from the skilled emcee featuring the vocal strength of Mela Machinko & produced by M-Phazes is straight fiyah! The track almost has a Pete Rock feel from a production standpoint which begs the question as to when Blu is gonna do more work with more producers like Pete Rock & M-Phazes. I’m thinking people that want more from Blu after hearing this banger may have to pay close attention because Blu’s unpredictability in everything from videos, singles & album releases is just that. Wild unpredictable just as quickly as the weather can change on an otherwise clear day….

Porn & Politics: Larry Flynt Speaks On His Life, President Obama, JFK, & The World Of Politics (Video)

VICE Magazine speaks with the legendary Larry Flynt on a variety of topics from his life, his opinion of President Barack Obama & comparisons to John F. Kennedy, paying people for information on public figures, & of course his career in porn. I’ve always found Larry Flynt to be a very interesting figure within the fabric of American society & this interview reveals a few new details as to what’s going on with the legendary Hustler magazine owner.

50 Cent – “Murder One” feat. Eminem

I’ve been playing this banger for a while now on the radio show, but apparently it’s going to be officially released on 50 Cent’s new “The Lost Tape” mixtape with DJ Drama later. It was originally titled ‘Shady Murder’ from the Street King mixtape Mr. Curtis Jackson put out months ago. For those of you who want a clean & dirty version without the the DJs shout outs yall can cop that here. Murdaaaaah!

R&B/Soul: Dwele – “What Profit”

While listening to some good soul music on Sunday I was just thinking that it was about that time for some new music from the Detroit homie Dwele. It almost seemed like I thought it into existence when my homie DJ Rasta Root, who doubles as Dwele’s DJ on tour, hit me up to let me peep this new joint from his currently untitled album that’s on the way. The Grammy nominated producer, singer, & songwriter never disappoints with the quality soul records & we’ve been waiting on a new full-length since his latest “W.Ants W.Orld W.Omen (W.W.W.)” project.  Check out this new single called “What Profit” that’s now available on itunes

Lupe Fiasco – “Around My Way” (Freedom Ain’t Free)

New single from Lupe Fiasco for “Around My Way” (Freedom Ain’t Free) that will appear on his upcoming album “Food & Liquor 2” & it not only samples a classic record but the arrangement is very similar to Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s classic “T.R.O.Y.” (The Reminisce Over You). Personally I think Lupe should have maybe reached out to Pete Rock as a kind gesture before making this a single on his new album. Just out of respect if not for anything else.  (Shrugs) Not long after this song debuted Pete Rock wasn’t too happy with it either speaking out from his twitter page…..Hopefully the brothas will “Straighten It Out”

Cocaine 80s – “This Can’t Be A Crime” | “Take My Keys”

Producer NO I.D.’s group Cocaine 80s featuring James Fauntleroy on the vocals is back with two more joints they just released following the “Queen To Be” record they just dropped a few days ago. Check out two more with “This Can’t Be A Crime” & “Take My Keys” below. Interesting choice of artwork…..

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) – “Bey”

Mos Def Yasiin Bey let’s loose this “Bey” track in honor of the birthday of his fellow Brooklynite & fallen emcee The Notorious B.I.G. who would have turned 40 today. The track is a feature for Yasiin’s “Top 40 Underdog” series. The instrumental track of choice used by Yasiin was made popular by Lil Wayne & Rick Ross for their collaborative strip club favorite called “John” (If I Die Tonight).

SNL Actor ‘Jay Pharoah’ Spoofs ESPN Analyst ‘Stephen A. Smith’ (Video)

For sports fans like myself who watch ESPN’s First Take regularly this is extremely hilarious because Saturday Night Live’s own Jay Pharoah nails Stephen A. Smith’s mannerisms & penchant for the dramatic almost to a “T”. Hahaaaa! Stephen A. Smith also got a kick out of it too…

Dan Rather Speaks With Bill Maher On How ‘Corporate Media’ Is Killing The Truth To The People (Video)

I watched this last Friday night on Bill Maher’s show & found it to be very interesting to see former CBS news anchor Dan Rather speaking on how corporate media is being controlled by Washington. It’s something that many of us already know, but to hear a veteran journalist like Dan Rather who worked for years in news speak on it is an great exclamation point to the problem due to a lack of transparency.

R&B: Dawn Richard – Wild N’ Young

Dawn Richard has been dropping some very good records I’ve heard from her as a solo artist. I heard this song over the weekend from the former Dirty Money member & found it to be pretty dope as well. If I could describe this record I would say it sounds like being a young carefree person traveling all over the world in over 4 minutes. My only thing I don’t like about it is the few curses in it, but the song is official to me. Dawn dropped this unreleased gem that was originally was going to appear on her Armor On” EP after celebrating the successful number of views of her new video “Bombs”.

Step In The Black Music Series: Jhene Aiko No Longer A ‘Stranger’ (Video)

While in Chicago for a live performance, R&B singer & songwriter Jhene’ Aiko was interviewed for the “Step Into The Black Music Series” sponsored by Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum & The Fader that I spotted at ThisIsRNB. Jhene’ Aiko speaks on her upcoming album “Souled Out”, being influenced by 90s R&B, touring in her early years, & how her sound is very personal because she writes her own music. Check out her live performance of one of my favorite songs from her called “Stranger” below….

R&B: Jhene’ Aiko – “2 Seconds”

After blowing up independently before being signed by producer & label exec NO I.D. to Def Jam, Jhene’ Aiko is poised to release her debut album “Souled Out” very soon lead by her upcoming single “3:16”. She teases her growing fanbase with this unfinished joint produced by Kevin Roosevelt called “2 Seconds”  & it sounds like’s it’s shaping up rather nicely.  I usually don’t post unfinished songs, but this one is a gem & most of you wouldn’t care or even notice the difference. It sounds THAT good. I’m sure in ‘2 seconds’ she’ll release the final version or her official single first….

R&B: Poo Bear (MDMA) – “#Beats2BreakUp2” (EP)

Jason Boyd, also known as Poo Bear (MDMA), has been in the music business behind the scenes as a singer, songwriter, & producer crafting joints for artists such as Chris Brown, Lupe Fiasco, Wiz Khalifa, Fat Joe, Usher, Kelly Rowland, Redman, Jill Scott, 112, & too many others to name in this post. Wearing many behind the scenes hats, I’m not surprised to find out “MDMA” stands for “Most Devoted Musician Alive”.  We’re in a very interesting period of music today as we’re seeing more & more of the creative people who may have been content to just work behind the scenes in the past now stepping out into the forefront as artists.  This Las Vegas native just debuted his first official free EP via his website called “#Beats2BreakUp2” featuring 7 tracks of original R&B music including a pretty dope cover of Lauryn Hill’s classic “Sweetest Thing”. I’ve had this EP run a few times since I downloaded it from his website.  Check out the tracklisting below, listen to a few key tracks we put up & download the full project below…..
