Nas’ “Time Is Illmatic” Documentary Is Going Up On Big Screens Worldwide (Video)
Hip-Hop is worldwide. You know that The Nation is worldwide, right? So, why wouldn’t the documentary talking about 20 years of the G.O.D.M.C. Nas’ definitive work – “Time Is Illmatic” – be distributed to a worldwide/international audience. Well, it will be. Tribeca Film acquired the distribution rights to make it so. October 3, 2014. Get ready world.
You can watch the trailer we posted here earlier in April or click the pic above for the brand new Quicktime version.
Do The Right Thing (Documentary)
Man, it has been 25 years since the release of the Spike Lee Joint, “Do The Right Thing.” This documentary captures just how you are feeling right now (esp. if you remember it hitting theaters back in the day) and impressions from actual Bed Stuy residents that live there and so much more!
You might shed a tear as we walk the real block with Spike (Mookie), Danny Aiello (Sal) and the production designer (Wynn Thomas) who created the hot block where it all went down oh so many years ago. You WILL raise a power fist by the time the Anniversary Block Party jumps off (with … you already know … PUBLIC ENEMY doing “Fight The Power”)… along with an array of very special guests. You MUST spend the full 23 minutes watching this. Your day is not complete until you do.
The Theory of Everything (Trailer)
Dr. Stephen Hawking. Theoretical physicist. Cosmologist. Director of Research at the Center for Theoretical Cosmology (of course). Now the all around enigmatic consult to humanity for most phenomena in the universe. But before he became more to the world, he was (and is) first a man, unto himself and beholden to a small circle of folks. This look at the history of Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) – then and now – is the world’s first.
And it looks to be a good look.
This trailer for “Theory of Everything” (above) reveals Hawking highlights in the movie – covering the meeting, wooing and wedding of his wife… his being diagnosed as having amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (popularly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease)… and his 40 years of life since. First screening will be the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2014; with a release date set for November 7, 2014, for the States.
Nicholas Cage Stars In Apocalyptic ‘Left Behind’ Film (Trailer)
Rayford Steele (played by Nicolas Cage) is piloting a commercial airliner just hours after the Rapture. Yeah that Rapture. Millions of people around the globe simply… vanish! Are you ready for it? The movie… talking about the movie people! Miles and miles above the Atlantic Ocean, Rayford barely in control of a damaged plane, full of terrified passengers…. On the ground, his daughter Chloe is one of those left behind to deal with a mad world in the grips of th Apocalypse; searching for her lost mother and brother.
The God my father talked about would never do something like this!
Yup… a little action. A little drama. Looks dope! Stirring.
Terry Crews Has Been in So Much S##t! You Just Didn’t Know … Until Now (Video)
You think “Friday After Next” – in which Terry Crews’ played Damon hilariously – is the end-all-be-all of his career? Noooo, you already slooow. Much goodness after the jump for you to peep then. Shout to UPROXX for its excellent post.

Interstellar (Trailer)
Murphy’s Law doesn’t mean something bad will happen. It means whatever can happen will happen.
A sci-fi movie trailer teased by the man who brought The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan) himself, at a Comic Con that had already teased a new ‘Batman’ in a movie… yeah, that happened. But this November. Woooo! “Interstellar” travel will be here (in theaters)! The trailer is awesome. The casting looks spot on to tell the epic tale it teases. Prediction: Extreme dopeness ahead! Had to load this post with so many snaps after the jump. So much visual excellence. Watch above.
Mad Max: Fury Road (Trailer)
Yooooooo! A lot of cinematic heat to warm the hearts and nether regions of every geek got leaked at this year’s Comic Con. Not the least of anticipated releases, “Mad Max: Fury Road” (yeah, the 20th century post-apocalyptic action thriller gets the 21st century treatment). Check that out above. And, if you’re a greedy-greedy (geek haha!)… get a lot more leakage and on-site insight from the linked site below.
Dear White People (Trailer)
A satire about being a black face in a white place.
Very interesting treatise. We’ve seen vids and blog articles about ‘what we wished White folks knew knew about Black people’ subject matter; but this one apparently approaches it with enough hey-I-know-that-actor star power and I-have-always-wanted-to-say-that scripting to make a full-length movie. The trailer hints at a thoughtful production that does honor to Spike Lee’s ‘School Daze’ and ‘Do the Right Thing’ days, leans toward John Singleton’s ‘Higher Learning’ handling of social issues (examine societal interaction with campus as a backdrop), and has just enough Tyler Perry-esque-ness (more ‘Family That Preys’ than ‘Madea…’) in it to keep all strata of movie goers engaged.
Hey, they talk about Black hair… throw some Chris Rock movie-making influence in there, too.
In theaters October 17, 2014. Put it on your ‘to watch’ list. Starting with the trailer above.
Total Slaughter: Bright Lights (Documentary) [Video]
The ‘Total Slaughter’ rhyme battle headliners fought through a worthy field of lyrical combatants to get to The Garden (aka Madison Square Garden, NYC, USA) on July 12, 2014. This is the documentary about the build-up, triumphs and let-downs (for those eliminated mainly) along the way to the main event. Check it out.
Bright Lights is an inside look at the preparations and mental states of Joe Budden, Hollow da Don, Murda Mook, and Loaded Lux as they all grind towards their ultimate showdown.
The finalists, Joe Budden and Hollow da Don, ultimately went at it! What happened? If you don’t know, hit the jump and watch some more…
VICE: The War On Kids (Video)
What? 21 Jump Street like a mug… The authorities are out of control though…
This is the story of Jesse Snodgrass, a kid with Asperger’s syndrome who was arrested by an undercover cop posing as a student at Jesse’s high school. This is the story of how the war on drugs preys on the most vulnerable.

Actor Don Cheadle On Making ‘Miles Ahead’ A Movie His Idol Would Want To See
Wow! Don Cheadle did more than study, or ‘get into’ his role playing his music idol Miles Davis. He became the man. “Miles Ahead” will be more than a mere ‘movie’ about Miles; rather a worthy retelling. Don is SERIOUS about this; and he wrote a letter about it. Wanna read it? Here it go.
A film for Miles Davis has to exist in a different ecosystem where there are no rules. It’s not a biopic, it’s an adventure, it’s a drama, it’s a love story, it’s about the core of human experience.

Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (Extended Movie Trailer)
More… the extended trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy” gives us more Rocket Raccoon (CGI put to good use) and longer looks at other Guardians. A lot of promo push up to this final month before the film hits the big screen (August 1, 2014). So hoping the movie lives up. Should. Dave Batista held up his end [as Brass Body] in “The Man With The Iron Fists” after all.
JFK: The Private President (Trailer)
Most consider the Kennedys to be the closest thing to American royalty we have had in the States. Likely why so much mystique surrounds them; and why we are compelled to watch when someone brings a story about them to the small or big screen. Most are very worthy of the attention, especially the ones about John F. (JFK); and it looks like “JFK: The Private President” will not drop the ball either. Saw this covered in Rolling Out magazine.
Jimi: All Is By My Side (Trailer)
A new Jimi Hendrix biopic (directed by “12 Years A Slave” writer John Ridley) entitled “Jimi: All Is By My Side” is due out in theaters September 26, 2014. And talk about perfect casting for the lead… Andre ‘Andre 3000’ Benjamin (of OutKast) plays Jimi Hendrix in this one. Check out the trailer above.
NatGeo Delves Deeply Into Tupac’s Murder Investigation As Part Of It’s ‘Last Great Decade’ Series (Video)
If you were around then, you feel our anguish now. Twenty years later… and the investigation into the murder of one of Hip-Hop’s most revered… has gotten NOWHERE?? Well, at least the death of Tupac Shakur stays on the front burner for a while longer; part of National Geographic’s three-night documentary mini-series “The ’90s: The Last Great Decade?” Talk show host and actor Arsenio Hall, music video director Gobi Rahimi and rapper MC E.D.I. Mean (of the Outlawz) all in there speaking truth that hurts regarding the lack of progress in the case and the hunt for the people responsible for Tupac’s death. Too high a profile for ‘Pac (or B.I.G.) for us to have zilch after all this time.
“I believe…that if Justin Bieber had gotten shot in Tupac’s car…we’d know more.”
– Arsenio Hall
The NatGeo series starts on July 6, 2014. Watch. Discuss.
Finding Fela (Trailer)
Summer of 1997, the world lost the great Fela Kuti. But soon enough (August) throngs of movie goers will watch Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney’s documentary on Fela’s life and music legacy…and fearlessness as an artist and human being. Check out the trailer above (you might recognize a fearless artist or two commenting therein).
No Good Deed (Trailer)
I mean… he’s no Jeremy Meeks… but it’s sistas’ favorite Brit Brother Idris Elba …being a true bad guy. A monster. But that’s alright, ladies. Drag your dude to see this one. Tell him Taraji P. Henson’s sexy azz is co-starring…And it’s a thriller, so you know you gotta squeeze in real tight and put all that body on your strong man for protection when things get scary.
Ought to be good. Remember folks. It’s just a movie. Trailer is promising a really good movie though! In theaters September 2014.

Behind The Scenes: Don Cheadle On The Trumpet Playing Miles Davis (Video)
Quick! A casting director needs a lead to play Miles Davis in a biopic film. Who? Don Cheadle? Damn good choice. Done! Here’s some behind-the-scenes video on “Miles Ahead” the Miles Davis movie; featuring some trumpet tuning and chat with Don Cheadle, Erin Davis (Miles’ son) and Vince Wilburn Jr. (Miles’ nephew).
Fury (Trailer)
They’re coming…300 of ’em…There’s 5 against 300.
We ain’t never run before. Why we gone run now?
An overwhelming enemy force on the approach to annihilate a much smaller force fighting for its way of life away from home; the fate of so many in the hands of so few. Like they tamped down the numbers of the Battle of Thermopylae told by the CGI-heavy “300” movie and updated arrow, sword and shield weaponry with tanks, guns and ammo. Check out the first trailer for Brad Pitt’s upcoming war epic (due out in theaters November 14, 2014). Not much obvious CGI in the trailer above though; looks to rely on a gritty, provocative story steeped in World War II era Germany. Pitt can hold his own in a tale of this magnitude certainly. Going to be interesting to see if co-stars like Shia LaBeouf and Michael Pena can keep up with their WarDaddy (lead character, played by Pitt) in this heavy heady film.
