VH1: CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story (Biopic) [Video]

The movie heard about ’round the Internetz… aka CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story was on VH1 a couple nights ago. VH1’s biopic starred Keke Palmer, Drew Sidora, and Lil’ Mama depicted the R&B trio’s (e.g. Chili, T-Boz, and Left Eye) real life which traces their highs and lows in the music industry (and in their lives as a result). Some incredible insights and ‘wow’ in the movie to be certain – especially singer-turned-exec Pebbles portrayed as the ultimate ‘Industry Rule Number 4,080’ type, being real shady with regard to TLC’s early career. As far as validity: CrazySexyCool had the help and blessing of two surviving members of TLC (R.I.P. Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes) who appear at the end of the film, performing their new single “Meant To Be”). Most social network posts the night the movie’s premiere were pretty good. Watch it (again, perhaps) above.

The Atlanta homie, DJ, emcee, & producer Yamin Semali sent over this dope ass remix of ‘Sinking Ships’ by fellow ATL resident, by way of Philly, Marian Mereba. The original version appears on her 10-track ‘Room For Living’ EP that’s available now. Not only did Yamin produce this dope remix, but he also delivers a few bars that compliment the ‘dopest Ethiopian’s’ song perfectly. “This past weekend, I met my grandma, Beulah Mae Jarrett Douthit’s family (my dad’s mother) for the first time. My grandma passed in 1965, so I’ve had no connection to her at all. I listened to the elders talk about her all day. One elder in particular, her oldest niece, who’s 78-years-old, told me that her nickname was ‘Bladey Mae,’ because of the blades she carried around in the purse and pockets, to protect her children from a segregated South, one of them being my dad. I was looking for a name for a new beat tape, and that one just came out of nowhere.

I haven’t heard Drake’s new album “Nothing Was The Same” yet, but I do know I really dug this particular soulful single called “Hold On, We’re Going Home”. Great choice to release a brand new video for this song. This mini-movie features cameos from rapper ASAP Rocky as well as actor Steven Bauer who famously starred as Al Pacino’s right hand man “Manolo” in the movie “Scarface”. I still dig the song although this mini-movie didn’t fit what I mentally pictured for such a great R&B record.

During the chat Jill plugs her upcoming movie “Baggage Claim,” reveals that she has actually been acting for decades, that she thinks Future and A$AP Rocky are beautiful, that she wrote the hook for The Roots’ “You Got Me” (uncredited, sang by Erykah Badu), ultimately getting her real start in music while staining wood at DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s studio… Great interview.
