Ne-Yo Does Benefit Concert In Nagoya, Japan (Video)
Ne-Yo did a benefit concert for Japan yesterday & is one of the first R&B artists to get things in motion over there. On my radio show last week I interviewed Nate of Boyz II Men who mentioned that they too had a benefit in the works for the Japanese people affected by the recent disasters out there. Japan is arguably a huge supporter of R&B music abroad so it’s great to see artists already working to give back. Big ups to Ne-Yo for this & also for a doing a decent job in the new movie Battle: LA I saw at the theater too…..
Erykah Badu, ‘DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown’, Spinning At SXSW (Video)
She looks a little nervous but she’s just getting started with the DJ thing….A massive amount of celebrities are beginning to compete with ‘working DJs’ for gigs. As a matter of fact there were also reports at SXSW that Fonzworth Bentley was closing out a DJ set at SXSW as well. No umbrella. ella ella ella…ey

Jhene Aiko – ‘Sailing Soul(s)’ Album
After hearing Jhene Aiko on a few songs that leaked to the web & her collaborations with Compton emcee Kendrick Lamar, I became genuinely interested in hearing more from her upon the release of her new full length project ‘Sailing Soul(s). It’s a free album that she mentioned via her website JheneAiko.com that she was releasing today. The full tracklisting is under the hood so Let’s dig into it……

“SunStorm” is the latest album from Detroit-area born, DC-area based producer/multi-instrumentalist Zo! & here is one of the key songs they decided to drop a video for. Dope song but I couldn’t help but laugh at the female lead’s knees in beginning of the video. She must’ve been working hard on dem dere knees……

Constellations: The A To Z Of Dennis Coffey by DJ House Shoes (Mixtape)
This is a very dope mix from Detroit’s own House Shoes paying tribute to the talented Dennis Coffey who’s been instrumental in many classic songs from Motown. Many crate diggers already know about his work that’s been sampled in hip hop a thousand times over. Check out this mix & get more familiar because it’s really good. The complete tracklisting is under the hood….

New R&B: Trey Songz – ‘I Refuse’

This new song from Trey Songz called ‘I Refuse’ really caught my attention….I love it when Trey does that real R&B with less vulgarity in his music. He needs to keep bringing the quality joints like these with great songwriting & soundscapes instead of some of those over the top profanity laced joints. I think many people would agree with me that we like our R&B to sound like R&B & our Hip Hop to sound like Hip Hop.
Rewind: Anjulie – ‘Warrior’

Although this song dropped around the summer of last year its one of my favorites that I play on the iphone/ipod every now & then. It’s a great motivational record when working out or just to get your mind right before any task. Â M.O.P. also does the trick for me too…yeah random, but you get the idea of where I’m coming from. Â While we were getting ready for the radio show last Saturday night, we were videoconferencing with our homegirl Reenu who moved back to Toronto & her presence reminded me to repost this song again. Reenu sort of looks like the artist Anjulie too, who is also from Toronto, so it even more than solidified the inspiration for this post. Many of us in Atlanta’s music scene know Reenu to be a big supporter of local Atlanta artists, DJs, & all around good music so this is dedicated to our homie Reenu…..
Terrace Martin & Devi Dev present ‘The Sex EP’
I’ve played the ‘Never Stop Loving You’ track from Terrace Martin featuring 9th Wonder a few times on the radio show. I used it mostly as a music bed to talk over but I had no idea it would be a part of this ‘The Sex EP’ project that just dropped from producer Terrace Martin & radio show host Devi Dev. I love the artistic cover & we all love sex so go check out the full project at the link below & the complete tracklist is under the hood……..
Jadakiss – ‘Hold You Down’ feat. Emanny
This new song ‘Hold You Down’ featuring R&B artist Emanny is one of the songs to appear on Jadakiss’s upcoming mixtape entitled “I Love You” which is dedicated to his fans.

Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra (Album)

Frank Ocean is a part of the Odd Future collective that’s been getting plenty of attention as of late. I haven’t been too familiar with Odd Future‘s work to begin with so when a new project dropped by one of its members by the name of Frank Ocean I felt like I’d “eventually” get to it. Didn’t really feel an urgency to check it out right away since I was already not familiar with the collective group’s catalog & it just seemed like unfamiliar fans were about to be bombarded with new material. When a female friend of mine raved that I should check out Frank Ocean’s new mixtape/street album I decided to give it a spin while doing chores around the crib. I’m glad she put me on to this project because IT IS very good. The problem with the current R&B climate these days is there’s no vulnerability or truthfulness in the music & more often than not doesn’t take any chances. The lack of genuine feeling in the music could be due to many R&B artists not penning & orchestrating the direction of their own songs.
Frank Ocean’s work feels very personal for it not to be his own heart & soul leaking from his pen. Frank Ocean’s ‘Nostalgia, Ultra’ does what traditional R&B is supposed to do & takes it a step further with some experimentation & genre bending that actually works although he’s at times rocking over a few readily familiar music beds. I believe that was a part of the concept in the first place based on the name of the project. I’ve included a few tracks for you to check out & you can download the whole project from the main link below. Listen to this project & tell me I’m wrong. There’s 14 tracks but 4 of them are interludes that connect to the next song. If you love good music it will grab you right away….
Classic Clips: James Brown – ‘Soul Power’ (Video)
Super Baddddddd….HAYIEEEEEEEEEAH! Get back!
New Music: Jill Scott – Love Rain (Gotta Remix)

It seems like many people are beginning to get that itch for Jill Scott to release some new music so producer “GOTTA” decided to remix Jill Scott’s ‘Love Rain’ from her debut album. This sounds really dope on some cool out ish. The timing couldn’t be better as ‘Jilly from Philly’ just got some good news for fans as she recently signed a new distribution deal with Warner Brothers for her upcoming album ‘Light Of The Sun’. Prior to the new deal with Warner Brothers records, Jill had a pretty ugly dispute with her former label Hidden Beach before it was resolved legally. The ‘Light Of The Sun’ album is due to drop this summer although Jill gave fans a few sneak peaks while out on tour with Maxwell last year. Definitely looking forward to Jill’s upcoming album too…..That’s wasup!
Classic Collabs: Davina feat Raekwon – ‘So Good’ (Video)
Ran across this earlier and I zoned out reminiscing on the days when ill emcees jumped on R@B remixes and they turned out super dope. They actually rhymed about something relevant to the song and gave you a strong 8 or even a classic 16. Many may not remember Davina, as she dropped one label album on RCA in 1997, and kinda disappeared, but this was mos def a banger. Enjoy! -Isreal
Erykah Badu Speaks On Her Necessities Whenever She’s On Tour (Video)
While touring in the land down her (Australia for you slow folks), DJ Low Down Loretta Brown better known to the world as Erykah Badu talked about her essentials to help her prepare for each & every show…..

New R&B Suite: Marsha Ambrosius, Bobby V, Bilal, Teedra Moses, Tyrese, & More

Usually we don’t have the time to post each & every R&B or Hip Hop record that drops, but occasionally we may do them all in one post. So from here on out for the R&B joints I’ve decided to name it the R&B Suite on the blog after my R&B mixtape series. I have another R&B mixtape on the way so stay tuned, but for now just enjoy a few these gems that dropped earlier this month. Just click on the images or the links to either listen or download under the hood……
