A Cool, Modern, High-Tech Cassette Player? Yes! Check Out The ‘Elbow’ (Video)

Are you kidding?!! The crazy ad that ends up making mad sense! Do you know anything about this Elbow cassette player? Well, the concept looks incredible! They really might ‘raise the cassette tape culture’ (per their web page tagline).

Elbow is a new cassette player design concept, dedicated to restoring the glory of a cassette tape. Currently in prototype stage. Elbow has been conceived and designed by audiovisual art organisation BrainMonk.

VERY cool tech. VERY cool gadgetry. Score for both all in one! Hope y’all heads have not thrown out all your cassettes yet.

Technology: Walking Boat Ramp (Video)

Okay, so I will admit that when I stumbled across “Walking boat ramp gets you to shore without getting wet” as a YouTube title… I was thinking that this would involve some mega-robo-tech that would let passengers board and ‘walk them out’ to a boat; like Godzilla going back out to sea after a monster fight.

No… I do not smoke… anything.

Hard Drive Marine made this walking boat. Its landing gates unfold and pull the craft to shore so you don’t have to go in the water.
– Tech Insider

Really cool. But you KNOW that sh!t would have been epic as I imagined it! Some of you would have booked a boat trip just to ride out on the MechaDockZilla (like MechaGodzilla, just made that up off the movie name, and you LOVE the name… or you’re a hater LOL)!

Technology: Roborace Concept Car Drives Itself (Video)

Bwaaahaaaa! For some reason, I read ‘Roborace’ in my head like ‘Liberace’ (flamboyant and flossy, all the same).

This self-driving race car is a prototype from motorsport startup Roborace. It can go 200 mph.
– Tech Insider

So, the flying car concept has to scooch over a bit for the Robocar now, huh? Okay…

How To Hide On The Internet (Video)

Ever watch those crime dramas and see the villains thwart the authorities time and again when they try to trace them? First, it was tracing back phones (bad guy ALWAYS hangs up before they got the location fixed)? Then the TV shows and movies started adding Internet trickeration to the bad guys’ manual. Like when they try to trace back a transmission to the IP address and get a location, but just like on phones, the villain has ‘bounced’ or ‘masked’ the address… How do they DO that? Well, without getting too techy, here’s how. Watch.

It’s become apparent that anyone — hackers or the government — could be spying on what you’re doing online. Take back your privacy with these simple steps.
– Tech Insider

Oh… In the earlier examples, you realize that the so-called ‘bad guys’ could be working for the government… You knew that, right?

Look, Up In The Sky… It’s The Kitty Hawk Flyer!

Maaaan what is it with all these flying car joints as of late?

The Kitty Hawk Flyer is a new, all-electric aircraft. It is safe, tested and legal to operate in the United States in uncongested areas under the Ultralight category of FAA regulations. We’ve designed our first version specifically to fly over water. You don’t need a pilot’s license and you’ll learn to fly it in minutes.

Technology: All-Electric Flying Car (Video)

Yes. We have posted on flying car tech, but this car right here ninja… this looks straight outta Star Wars… Trek… GI Joe! True vertical take-off and landing in a sleek design. Usually, we’d expect this to be a military thing for some time before it becomes a civilian product for consumption. But naaaaah son. LOOK at WHERE they are demoing this; right on the roadway!

Flying cars, that perennial dream for futurists that always seem to be at least five years away, may be a little closer to reality than we realize. A lot of prototypes have been showcased recently, and a lot of money is being tossed around. More people than ever seem to buy into the crazy notion that in the near future we’ll be buzzing between rooftops in private, autonomous drones. Today, Munich-based Lilium Aviation announced an important milestone: the first test flight of its all-electric, two-seater, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) prototype.
– New Innovations

Oh, did we mention that it’s all-ELECTRIC!! Duuuude! No gas. Imagine charging this with solar power and flying with no fossil fuel use or emissions. BOOM!

Technology: Stopping Intrusive ‘Rogue Drones’ (Video)

I actually heard about using raptors to take down unwelcome drones. But the rest of these though, interesting.

How do you take down an illegal drone? Here are 4 Insane ways…
– Freeze Lists

A couple of things about this video though… First, notice that once you assign a ‘term’ to a problem, the campaign combatting it intensifies, Case in point, did you know there was a fight against ‘rogue drones’ until we started calling them that? Second, anybody see how this might be another way to pit robots against humans? We will need to be VERY careful about who we deem ‘rogue humans’ (uh oh, is that a ‘term’).

Science & Technology: Drone Gets Struck By Lightning (Video)

SHOCKING! Hahaa…

Okay, maybe sound the horn on that one (womp waaah). But somebody had to say it. And you gotta see this!

At the University of Manchester’s High Voltage Laboratory, we see what happens when a DJI Phantom 3 drone gets hit with an electrical impulse of 1.4MV – basically, a lightning strike. Actually, two Phantom 3 drones. We had a backup.

This moment brought to you by drones, backup drones, and muthaf**king SCIENCE!!

ZH2: The Super-Quiet 4×4 That Runs On Hydrogen And Produces Water As Its ‘Exhaust’ (Video)

So, like about 25 or more years after we should have, are we finally gonna get to drive such automotive tech perfection? PLEASE???

(Hmmm… looks like the soldiers are getting to drive this first. Talking about ‘going green.’ Oh well.)

General Motors aka GM aka the biggest of ‘Big Auto’… has unveiled this joint industry-military creation, the ZH2. It runs smooth, practically silent (with minimal ‘accoustic signature,’as the military folks would say). It does NOT use or burn fossil fuel, so it doesn’t give off much heat that could be picked up by enemy heat-sensing night vision cameras (because, the military) nor does it give off harmful emissions. It runs on hydrogen. And its exhaust is water… drinkable water! Even the waste from this 4×4 is not wasteful. Kinda stylish to boot.

Scewo: The Stair-Climbing Wheelchair (Video)

Swiss engineering students came up with the Scalevo wheelchair. Now they’ve improved upon the innovation to create Scewo, the latest prototype wheelchair that uses rubber tracks to traverse urban terrain – including and especially stairs. This could make a whole lot of places ‘wheelchair accessible.’ Super dope!

Currently crowdfunding on Patreon, with market release targeted for 2018.

Technology: Silicon Valley Piloting Security Droids For The Office Place (Video)

This thing looks like one of the Daleks on ‘Dr. Who’… Exterminate. EXTERMINATE! Hahaaa!

(Wait. Why am I laughing? Okay, moving on.)

But the design is meant to be disarming to those who might see ‘murder bot’ when one of these droids glide by. In the clip above, the droids’ applications look to be benign – sensing human presences, reporting on security anomalies like open windows and such. The only ‘Big Brotherish’ thing in the video is that ID check (think: let me see your papers), but as long as we don’t arm the droids or go all ‘Gattaca’ (think: this is an ‘inferior’ human) we should avoid a Terminator Skynet apocalypse scenario.

With those caveats, my ruling… cool future tech.

Fashion/Technology: The Tuibo Cycling Vest & Assistant (Video)

Know how we’re supposed to treat riders on bicycles like any other vehicle on the road? Sure. Can do. Except when we cannot see them coming up from behind. And when we cannot see them at all at night (because all neon ain’t fashionwear). And when we don’t know what turn they plan to make in a sec, because they have to maintain balance and handlebar grip before making it.

But yeah, besides all that going against the healthy/green-minded commuters with us out in these streets… sure, we can share the road.

Alright. Cynical much? Yeah, you got us. But if you cycle much, Tuibo has got you. Got your back. Literally. Check it out!

Designed to be your companion along the way, Tuibo is a smart vest made to improve visibility with it’s built-in flexible LED displays for braking and turning lights, also with it’s head light and horn. Tuibo’s fully washable and has hidden expandable sides to cover you backpack, all embedded in a subtle design.

Technology: SAW Robot Moves On Its Own Like A Worm And Can Be Shrunk Down For Use As A Medical Device (Video)

Came across this on the Interwebs. A robot that ‘moves like a worm’ that could be ‘shrunk and sent into your intestine’ sounds like a good idea… but ONLY by comparison.

(Yeah, compared to camera jammed on the end of a tube being pushed up your rectum for that colonscopy.)

So, um, lets focus on the tech and other applications for the 3D-printed SAW (Single Actuator Wave-like) robot that swims, crawls and climbs.

Intelligent motion, ease of manufacturability, design for scalability… HUGE selling points for any tech. Think about how way less cool a Roomba would be if we had to keep checking on it and repositioning it to finish the vacuuming, or if it was really hard or expensive to make. Imagine if there is some ‘much bigger’ Roomba cleaning huge warehouse floors somewhere. And that’s scaling it to big. What about scaling smaller? Wouldn’t fields involving exploration of hard-to-reach, hard-to-negotiate areas find shrunk down versions of this tech VERY useful?

(Wait. Are we talking about robo-worming our guts again??? Maaan PAUSE! PAAAAUSE!)

Enjoy the expo above.

Introducing Boston Dynamics’ Handle: A Super-Powered Research Robot (Video)

Maaan, they keep making these robots better, stronger, faster, more flexible and agile and… you get the picture. But maybe these bot makers don’t ‘get the picture’ – the Skynet-Schwarznegger-Terminator, science-NONfiction horror picture. Then again, Boston Dynamics CEO Marc Raibert has been quoted as saying, “This is the debut presentation of what I think will be a nightmare-inducing robot.” So, maybe they do get it.

Handle is a research robot that stands 6.5 ft tall, travels at 9 mph and jumps 4 feet vertically. It uses electric power to operate both electric and hydraulic actuators, with a range of about 15 miles on one battery charge. Handle uses many of the same dynamics, balance and mobile manipulation principles found in the quadruped and biped robots we build, but with only about 10 actuated joints, it is significantly less complex. Wheels are efficient on flat surfaces while legs can go almost anywhere: by combining wheels and legs Handle can have the best of both worlds.
– Boston Dynamics

Oh… Handle is a research bot. Because all kinds of researchers need a 6.5-foot tall jumper with a four foot vertical (right, all kinds of NBA researchers). Oooo–kaaay. They must think we fell off the back of the turnip truck and it backed over our heads right after that!

(Not saying it’s not cool tech though.)

Flying Made Easy: The Icon A5 Mini-Plane (Video)

Dope! Got more news on the Icon A5 – the 2-seat mini-plane designed to be so simple that anyone who can drive a car can fly it. The sticker weighs in at just over $200K, so it is near the regular people price range (okay, regular people who have quite a bit of big change to throw around). Plus this plane can land on and take off on water. Put in the money, 30 hours’ training, get a license, and viola… your life is ‘fly’ for real #BALLIN

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos Pilots The ‘Method-2’ Mech (Video)

South Korean robotics manufacturer Hankook Mirae Technology debuted its first prototype piloted mech, the Method-2.

Remember that sci-fi-come-to-life robot we posted on here a while back? Well, Jeff Bezos took it for a ride a few days back. And that’s big; as big as the movie monster bot (another demo reel of it above).

Pause: Who’s Jeff Bezos??? Oh, he runs Amazon. That all… BOOM! Like we said, BIG!

Building a movie bot is a project success. Getting rich folks excited about it? The business! Although military contracts would surely be expected to follow, Slate did some digging that revealed that they – maker Hankook Mirae Technology – ain’t ready yet (more here). Disaster relief and cleanup – that seems to be the ceiling for these mega man-driven machines. Not as sexy as a ‘War Machine’ (Marvel), but no small feat. And after the storm, when the help comes, best believe these will be welcomed like some of the hottest things walking!
