If I haven’t said it on here before, I will say it now: If you want an imaginary something made real, get the sci-geeks excited about it. They will get right on making it real. Case in point: MIT and Harvard have a method to herd photons (understood to have no real mass) and have them bind together. The resultant new type of matter, photonic matter, would essentially the beam that would be the blade of a lightsaber (like in the ‘Star Wars‘ movie). “This past weekend, I met my grandma, Beulah Mae Jarrett Douthit’s family (my dad’s mother) for the first time. My grandma passed in 1965, so I’ve had no connection to her at all. I listened to the elders talk about her all day. One elder in particular, her oldest niece, who’s 78-years-old, told me that her nickname was ‘Bladey Mae,’ because of the blades she carried around in the purse and pockets, to protect her children from a segregated South, one of them being my dad. I was looking for a name for a new beat tape, and that one just came out of nowhere.

My folks over at Bad Magics not only hip me to the latest from undergrounders that I know… but also to artists and trends that I should get to know. Take this self-titled collaborative EP “Knifefight” – experimental abstract offering from the duo consisting of Beans (the native New York emcee) and Mux Mool (the Minnesota producer). Though this work is barely in my range of comprehension, I’m told these guys have been much farther off the grid. Their typical sound tastes bounce between and sometimes blend electronic with futuristic Star Trek 24th century vibes with street grime with funk. The tone is usually dark but said of this project…
“It’s the most relaxed, fun and playful album I’ve ever done, but it’s still hard enough to feel like a knife fight, y’know.â€
