Skyzoo – “Jansport Strings” (Video)

“The video, directed by Anthony Sylvester, was shot throughout Bed Stuy, Brooklyn NY. The theme was to show the parallels between me as a 9-year old aspiring emcee and me now as an accomplished emcee and artist, and how the things around me that groomed me haven’t changed. The song is a 3-minute auto-bio of me as a kid in Brooklyn. The ending is a clip from Video Music Box, the legendary NYC video show run by DJ Ralph McDaniels. This episode in particular was the debut of Chi-Ali’s classic ‘Age Ain’t Nothin But A Number’. Seeing that video that day on this episode of VMB made me start rhyming. This clip was literally the moment that changed my life. And the Chi-Ali tee shirt is pretty amazing. They’ll be on sale soon. Enjoy…” –Skyzoo

In an rather coincidental sort of timing, Chi-Ali was recently released from prison & Special Ed posted a photo of the two together.  So indeed one time for Chi-Ali coming home as well.  Check out Special Ed’s quote & the photo after the jump. Skyzoo’s upcoming album ‘A Dream Deferred’ out Oct. 2nd on The Faculty/Duck Down Music Inc.

R&B/Soul: DJ Kemit – “Fortune Teller” feat. Eric Roberson (Video)

New video from the homie (and all around super-dope producer and deejay) DJ Kemit. It’s a soulful banger! Watch for the cool guest appearances. I know I saw DJ Rasta Root, DJ Salah Anase, and model/singer Linda Pearl in there. Nice. Equally as nice…the silky smooth assist from crooner Eric Roberson on this joint. Respect to director Jirard (of the Digibees) and producer Aishah Rashied Hyman on this one, too. The track “Fortune Teller” appears on DJ Kemit’s new album “Everlasting” that’s available now!

Styles P Speaks On The Diamond Life Project, Rock The Bells, The Passing Of Chris Lighty, & More (Video)

In his interview with The Breakfast Club (Power 105 Morning Show), Styles P (the self-proclaimed ‘Elder Statesman of Hip-Hop’) lets us know about “The Diamond Life Project” (available FREE here), that ‘the bars are back’ (e.g. lyricism has returned to Hip-Hop), and that (for the most part) he’s a good guy selling juice at his juice bar and doing his music. On the music, Styles P said he is “working on” a solo joint and LOX is working on a group joint, too… We’ll see. Styles kept it light for the sit-down, but he had to touch on the silliness (read: shamefulness) of the Mobb Deep beef and on the tragedy of the loss of Chris Lighty. Respect. Of course, there’s more to the video than that. Watch the interview for the rest. Good stuff.

R&B/Alternative: I/O (Ayo Olatunji) – “You Slay Me”

Singer/songwriter/producer/instrumentalist Ayo Olatunji (better known as I/O) is the grandson of Grammy Award-Winning Nigerian drummer, educator, social activist and recording artist, Babatunde Olatunji. I/O puts down his own flavor of soul mixed with Hip-Hop – or ‘new soul wave’ (shout out to Butta at SoulBounce) – on a hot track called “You Slay Me.” Drawing comparisons to the likes of Frank Ocean and Miguel, I/O is bringing a new kind of R&B – laced with more electronic influences than traditional soul/R&B. Homeboy Sandman: Foundation (Mini-Documentary)

Above (and after the jump) in the post: The first and second parts of a three-part series on Homeboy Sandman, directed by Rel. Part 1 includes commentary from Homeboy Sandman (damn…he left LAW SCHOOL to rhyme?? wowww) and his Dad. Maybe Sandman’s revealing that, at first, he could only spit when he was high is not unique; but the way in which he shares that feels genuine. His “highness” was not related as a “fun” thing, but as a “necessary evil” for him. Eventually, he found his way in rhyming sober…only then declaring himself an emcee. Compelling stuff! By the way, be on the lookout for “First of a Living Breed”Homeboy Sandman’s album – coming out September 18, 2012.

Immortal Technique Speaks On Ghostwriting, Nas, & Drug Culture (Video)

Shout out to HardKnock TV and especially to Immortal Technique for speaking realness! This is just part one, and it was chock full of dopeness! During the talk, Immortal Technique declared that Hip-Hop is like no other art. We demand realness…perhaps a bit too much. Case in point: An actor’s swag is given to him by someone else. A director directs Denzel Washington in delivering lines he did not even write. Yet no one says Denzel is not real. No one asks Al Pacino if he is “holding keys” after seeing him portray a drug dealer in a movie. Folks understand he is playing a role. Unfortunately Hip-Hop culture, being the ‘realest’ art, is less thoughtful. Good or bad, we believe rappers pen every verse they spit and live every word of ‘that life’ they rhyme about. What’s worse: We don’t even want that dirty-grind-drug-selling life described in those kinds of rhymes. We want the plush life that is supposed to come after that…and *news flash* no one gets that life!

Forbes Hip Hop Cash Kings 2012 (Video)

Dr. Dre tops Forbes magazine’s list of top hip hop earners for 2012. These top earners lists are all based on gross assessments so it can be a little misleading to some people because if an artist’s “outgo” is more than their “income” then they aren’t really keeping much of the prize. One great point made in the video is the distinction between consistent earners & people who make the list occasionally. Check out the complete list according to Forbes’s ‘estimates’ below….
