Sooooooooo I literally fly to NYC this weekend but wound up spending more time hanging with family in NY, NJ, & Philly so basically I missed the BK Hip Hop festival. Q-Tip had mentioned on twitter than he had a special surprise, but we don’t think anyone expected Kanye to come out on stage. From what I heard even the on-duty cops were taking pictures when Kanye came out on stage.

RZA Talks Sampling Vs Traditional Recording

Some musicians really feel that sampling doesn’t make you a musician and that could be true in some situations but because there are no set ways of how to sample the process is different for each producer. Some producers’ process is the same as any musicians; playing notes chopped from a sample and others may be likened to a DJ the way they match beats per minute of break beats and loops. Kudos to RZA for taking what was meant to be an insult and turning it into a moment for self improvement.

D’Angelo Working on New Album

Billboard.com is reporting that D’Angelo is back working on new material with ?estlove of The Roots. Apparently ?est tweeted during the a session the two had last night.
“Most people use midnight as a time to sleep. others are working on their 11 year followup. this of course being hour number one,” ?estlove said via his twitter.
Details on the project are sketchy with names like Prince, Raphael Saadiq, John Mayer, and Cee Lo Green rumored to have worked on the project through is long development. The project is going to be released on J Records late 2011 or early 2012.
D’Angelo has been on through a lot since his last release in 2000 entitled Voodoo, with a serious car wreck, an arrest, an reported substance abuse issues. It’ll be great to see him back doing his thing.

D.C. is definitely getting stronger & stronger with talented artists coming out of that area. The whole DC,Maryland, & Virginia in general. The DMV is putting out quality, but just haven’t gotten enough of the spotlight for its quality as of yet. I’ve checked out several joints here & there from Phil Ade who’s currently signed to Raheem DeVaughn’s independent label 368 Music Group but I think this is the first joint that really drew me in. Phil Ade links up with Pittsburgh spitter Mac Miller to deliver rhymes over this joint produced by Sunny Norway that sounds like some real laid back lyrical mood music. This is a good choice leak from Phil Ade’s upcoming album called ‘A Different World’ that drops on Tuesday in conjunction with 368 Music Group & 2dopeboyz.

Black Milk x Jack White – ‘Brain’/’Royal Mega’

Motor city representatives Jack White of The White Stripes and Black Milk have teamed up to drop a 7′ of rock, funk, and hip hop fusion to be released as the first project from Jack White’s Third Man Records.
Black Milk says this of the collab on his website:
My first reaction was one of shock that an artist like him, who most people would categorize as a rock star, would want to work with an independent hip-hop artist. My second reaction was surprise that he even knew I existed, even though we’re from the same city. Of course, my response was “Hell yeah! When and where do I need to be to make this happen?†A few back and forth emails led to my band (keyboardist AB; drummer Daru Jones; and bassist Malik Hunter) and I taking a trip to Nashville to record at Jack’s home studio.

R&B / Soul: DJ Jazzy Jeff x Ayah – Back For More (Mixtape)

I’ve been struggling with how we label mixtapes & albums these days especially when running across quality projects like this Back For More album from DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Toronto songstress Ayah. This soulful R&B joint is so tight it feels unfair to label it a “mixtape” in anyway shape or form. It’s basically a free 13 track album that’s better than the majority of products in the marketplace for sale. Key songs I’ve been digging include “Back For More”, “Press Play”, “Notorious“, “One Life feat. Tona”, “Telephone“, & taking us to church with the gospel influenced sound of “Be Right“. I’ve been letting it play in my office several times & I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it. This is quality soul right here. Looking forward to seeing Ayah & the world famous DJ Jazzy Jeff tour just off this project alone…..
