Saving An Ancient Language Using Pop Music (Video)

Something very Hip-Hop about this story. We (Hip-Hop Nation, Black people, all people) know about griots who tell stories they were told, preserving history through generations, how slaves communicated stories (and plans) through song, and how Hip-Hop built on those traditions, speaking to and through the Culture… Well, Renata is doing that at the essence; not just speaking stories, but attempting to save the mode of speech (her language) itself using songs.

Renata Flores is a 16-year-old singer from Peru who is using her voice to save an ancient language. Though Quechua is the second-most spoken language in Peru, native speakers have suffered from discrimination and social stigma for generations, and today, many young people aren’t learning the language at all. But with her powerful vocals to covers of pop songs by Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys in her native tongue, Flores is sparking a renewed celebration of Quechuan language and culture.

‘Close Range’ With Ray Allen (Documentary)

Very interesting tidbit from Ray’s wife in there: What do the ultimate competitors do when they retire? That fire has to go into something. Fortunately for the NBA ultimate shooter, Ray Allen is a golfer… with some competitive pro-athlete retirees that golf. GQ covers that and much more in such a short docu-series episode.

Ray Allen is a living legend. He’s a ten-time NBA All-Star who has won two championships, in 2008 with the Boston Celtics and 2013 with the Miami Heat. He holds the NBA’s record for most three-pointers made, with 2,973 buckets. Since his retirement in 2016, Ray has shifted his focus – to fatherhood, golf, and an organic fast-food restaurant. Take a look into the life of a champion, and his obsession with greatness.

The Making Of “Strength Of A Woman” (VH1 Trailer)

Watching the trailer for “The Making Of: Strength Of A Woman” (debuting on VH1, May 2nd at 11pm EST) you get a sense that Mary J. Blige is laying it all on the line in a few ways. First, she mentions a couple of times that this “Strength Of A Woman” project she is dropping is about healing herself; sharing her struggles, not prescribing or preaching for anyone else. That more than infers a second; Mary putting her business all the way out there (which she has done before, but that “that’s my Becky With The Good Hair” line implies some SCANDALOUS storytelling is in store). Third, The Queen Of Hip-Hop Soul declares that this LP is the ‘real Mary‘… almost like a love-it-or-leave-it decision point will be laid out for the fans who cop. Risky, but hey, it’s Mary J; so folks will likely love it.

Now, we’d be pound foolish not to mention the coup of leveraging Mary’s brand in pushing an ‘album documentary’ timed around the release of “Strength Of A Woman” on VH1 where her target audiences (longtime fans of hers AND longtime fans of reality show level DRAMA) will be watching. Plus, peep all the contributors’ cameos, from Diddy to DJ Khaled.

There’s a reason the Queen is the most powerful attacking piece on the board. The Queen Of Hip-Hop Soul is on the move, starting with tomorrow’s release of “Strength Of A Woman” followed by this tell-everything documentary on May 2nd.

Damn. All that… from a random horse-in-a-park sighting. If this movie is anything like the trailer teases, it is WORTHY!

American Assassin (Trailer)

Oh ho hooooo sh!t!!! Sometimes a kill-people-that-need-to-be-killed movie is the way to start a kick-azz weekend. Sometimes most of the time. In September… it’ll be one (or more) of those weekends! But today, you can start your weekend with this trailer.

AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.

Awake, A Dream From Standing Rock (Extended Trailer)

The fight is still on, just not on your TV any more. Like most relevant revolutions… not televised. So what are the Sioux still beefing about over there? Pipelines for certain. But “Awake” goes deeper; telling the story of Native-led defiance that forever changed the fight for clean water, the environment and the future of the planet. You know, ‘trivial’ pursuits like that.

Guess this is not worth the mainstream (or those who say they are not mainstream) media’s air time, huh? Good thing for this documentary.

Beatriz At Dinner (Trailer)

Whoa! That part at the end. Where Salma (sexy as HELL even dressed ‘all the way down’) told that chick, “You don’t know me.” That was too real. Like just the other day almost-said-to-coworker real!

Beatriz (Salma Hayek), an immigrant from a poor town in Mexico, has drawn on her innate kindness to build a career as a spiritual health practitioner in Los Angeles. Doug Strutt (John Lithgow) is a cutthroat, self-satisfied billionaire real estate developer. When these two opposites meet at a dinner party, their worlds collide and neither will ever be the same.

And wowwww… Don’t know Lithgow as a person, but playing THAT much of an azzhole in this movie HAD to take WORK (one hopes, even though there are some mega-anuses out here in ‘real life’ – real talk).

“Beatriz At Dinner” hits the theater screens June 9th. Watch the trailer above.

Former NBA Player Kenny Anderson’s New Documentary Film “Mr. Chibbs” (Trailer)

One of the best pure point guards in the NBA.

That’s Kenny Anderson. And that’s a hell of an intro for a basketball player… drunk driving, womanizing, babymaking machine. And balancing it all, reflecting on and coming to grips with it all, and the journey forward as a sober, responsible man and father… ought to make for one hell of a documentary.

Yep. Call the movie “Mr Chibbs.” Looks like a slam dunk for a must watch.

The Assassination Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr (Documentary)

“Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader of the African-American civil rights movement and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who became known for his advancement of civil rights by using civil disobedience. He was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, at the age of 39. King was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:05PM that evening. The King family and others believe that the assassination was carried out by a conspiracy involving the US government, as alleged by Loyd Jowers in 1993, and that James Earl Ray was a scapegoat. In a 1999 civil trial that did not name the US government as a defendant and sought $100 from Jowers, with both the family and Jowers cooperating together and the only presenting parties, the jury ruled against Jowers and Unidentified Conspirators”

Men’s Rights & Gender Equality Explored In New Documentary called “The Red Pill” (Trailer)

When the societal scale of justice tips, we expect them to tip towards fairness; to balance the disadvantaged, right? But what happens when the scale tips too far? What’s worse, what happens when the ‘newly vicitimized’ are persecuted for coming forward…let alone for standing up for themselves? Why all this double-talk and roundabout conjecture speak? Because this post is about men speaking up about how they are being victimized by a culture that more and more favors women – at the expense of men.

When a feminist filmmaker sets out to document the mysterious and polarizing world of the Men’s Rights Movement, she begins to question her own beliefs. The Red Pill chronicles Cassie Jaye’s journey exploring an alternate perspective on gender equality, power and privilege.

Intriguing. And now Cassie Jaye no longer even calls herself a feminist. She must have found some deep sh!t. Hit the jump for an extended teaser trailer and expo on “The Red Pill.” And you can get deeper in depth with USA Today on the topic of ‘masculinity under fire’ by following the link below.
