Happy Birthday Roberta Flack (Video)
Not many female soul singers have had the impact that Roberta Flack has had on virtually all genres of music. From hip hop to rock, Flack’s musical influence continues to have its place in popular tunes. One of the nicest joints with Flack’s influence laced within can be seen above. She and Lauryn Hill, along with The Fugees, transform a classic into a hip hop staple.

Red Bull Music Academy Contest (Video)
It’s about that time again for musicians to submit their applications to attend the Red Bull Music Academy that will be held in NYC this year from September 30 – November 2, 2012. The Red Bull Music Academy is an international workshop that was founded in 1998, and touches down in a different city each year. Last year the workshops were held in Madrid Spain & artists like Erykah Badu, Young Guru, MF Doom, Bootsy Collins, Chic & more either performed or lectured during the symposium. How it works is two groups of 30 successful applicants, themselves representing a diverse range of music styles and methodologies, attend lectures by musical pioneers, and work on their own tunes in custom-built studios. By night, they have the chance to perform in some of the host city’s most iconic clubs and concert halls. Atlanta has been fortunate in that a few participants have come from this city in DJ Rasta Root & most recently producer Slide 20 XL who attended Georgia State University here in Atlanta. There’s no age limit, but you must be 21 to enter & it’s totally free to apply so if you or anybody you know of is an aspiring artist, DJ, Producers, emcees or all around musician that would be interested just tell them to go to the link below & download the application. Application deadline is April 2nd so y’all better not procrastinate with this opportunity….

R&B/Alternative: Delilah – “2-4am” (Mixtape)
UK singer Delilah is one of those types of artists who have been releasing some great music that compels me to keep an eye out for what she does next. She has a new full length project on Atlantic Records called “From The Ground Up” due to drop on March 26th (4 days before my birthday…should be a nice gift to me). To hold her growing fanbase over, the Paris born UK raised artist dropped this new 8-track mixtape/EP of sorts called “2-4am” that I’ve been playing this morning. A few of the key tracks I really like I’ve included below, but you can check out the tracklisting & download the whole project by clicking on the artwork & links underneath….

Robert Glasper has a remix competition running so Tall Black Guy put his hat in the race by dropping this joint just a few hours ago & it’s spreading amongst his fans & beyond already. Tall Black Guy is no stranger to winning these producer based contests so don’t be surprised when he wins. Perfect sounds for a sunday afternoon right here…

Miguel – “Adorn” (Video)
Miguel has really been impressing me with his music. His debut album “All I Want Is You” has some very good album tracks & break out hits like “All I Want Is You”, “Sure Thing”, “Quickie” on it & from the sounds of this new record “Adorn” he’s not stopping with putting out that type of quality. “Adorn” is off of Miguel’s upcoming project, Art Dealer Chic: Vol.1, dropping February 27th.
The Roots – Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around (Video)
“On February 14th, the soundtrack to the film ‘Soundtrack to a Revolution’ will be released. It features contemporary artists singing traditional Civil Rights-era freedom songs. The Roots perform “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around†in this clip, which juxtaposes black-and-white footage of 20th-century Civil Rights protests with color footage of the band performing in a recording studio.” – Rolling Stone
Comedy: John Legend Performs ‘Extra-Ordinary Tebow’ on ESPN’s First Take (Video)
I watched this on ESPN’s First Take & laughed out loud. John Legend was a guest on ESPN’s First Take & did a Tim Tebow inspired song called “Extra-Ordinary Tebow”. Hahaaa! John Legend goes in on Skip Bayless while Stephen A. Smith watches….
R&B/Soul: Bilal – “Free” (Tall Black Guy Remix)
Detroit producer Tall Black Guy is back at it again with his very dope & soulful remixes. This time he reworks Philly soul singer Bilal’s “Free” joint that was originally produced by V.A. producer Nottz. After you peep that dope TBG remix make sure you also check out a bonus acoustic version of Bilal’s “Think It Over” jawn too….
Illadelph/matic (Mixtape)
DJ Mick Boogie put together a special mixtape featuring a unique mix of rarities and remixes featuring Nas and The Roots. Mick Boogie put the mix together for Madden Bowl 2012, part of this year’s Superbowl events in Indianapolis that take place on Thursday. Of course Madden Bowl 2012 will feature live performances from Mick Boogie, Nas and The Roots. Check the tracklisting, artwork, & Download the mix courtesy of Okayplayer.com under the hood below….
R&B/Soul: Frank Ocean – “Voodoo”
Frank Ocean let this really dope gem of a song loose on his tumbler page recently & I’ve been rewinding this joint back several times over. I believe this “Voodoo” jawn is maybe a snippet or teaser because the song is relatively short. Definitely a nice joint right here…
Carl Thomas – “Don’t Kiss Me” feat. Snoop Dogg (Video)
I was just telling people on twitter last month that the new album “Conquer” from R&B soul singer Carl Thomas has some great gems on the project. “Long Distance Love Affair”, “Sweet Love”, “Round Two”, & “Don’t Kiss Me” are the key tracks that stood out to me. This joint “Don’t Kiss Me” featuring Snoop Dogg is definitely one of those gems & apparently the former Bad Boy artist’s team felt the same way about the song enough for them to shoot this video…
D’Angelo Performs First Live Show in 11 Years (Video)
The soulful voice behind classic albums Brown Sugar and Voodoo seems to be finally back after an 11 year hiatus. Even though D’Angelo’s absence had much more to do with personal troubles than lack of musical inspiration,it looks like the good brother is back on the right track. He was spotted at Filadelfiakyrkan in Stockholm, Sweden performing new joints along with classic joints like “Chicken Grease” and “Shit, Damn, Motherfucker” to a lively crowd, with the energy and passion that we grown accustomed to from D’Angelo. I also see the homie Kendra Foster doing her thing signing background!! No word on an album just yet, but things are looking up. We need you D!!!
Stacy Barthe x Love Ultra Radio Interview with Jah Prince
We talk with Stacy Barthe about her transition from success as songwriter to now as a stand-alone artist. Maneuvering her way through the industry and personal pain, we salute the success of her EP, ‘Sincerely Yours’ and even now her addition to the 2012 BET Music Matter Tour with Elle Varner, Luke James and headliner Estelle. Another link we got from the Atlanta Urban Blog, JayForce.com and as you listen, her resume speaks for itself.
Elle Varner – Conversational Lush (Mixtape)
Following the success of her critically popular record “Only Want To Give It To You” with J.Cole, R&B songstress Elle Varner delivers her first mixtape “Conversational Lush” which features some key tracks that I found to be pretty dope on here like “WTF”, “Do You Want To”, “Feel Like A Woman”, & the Bill Withers inspired joint called “Runaway”. The beauty in an artist like Elle Varner is her vocal talent & her songwriting which feels very personal to who she is. Her music conspicuously stands out from the crowded market of R&B chicks trying to make a mark in recent years. Elle Varner’s official album “Perfectly Imperfect” is due to be released later this year, but for now you can listen and/or download the “Conversation Lush” mixtape below…
New Music: Yuna – “Live Your Life” (Prod. By Pharrell)
This song is so dope I went ahead & purchased it. I’m not that familiar with Malaysian artist Yuna, but after seeing a tweet about this song on the new Fader label I found it to be a pretty dope discovery. I wasn’t even fully aware that FADER had a music label until now either…..
“FADER Label signee Yuna’s new Pharrell-produced single “Live Your Life†is a full-pour of positivity, delivered with remarkable, quiet power. Yuna’s singing is comfortable and still flawless, trilling easily over Pharrell’s soft drums. She will release a full-length this spring. Stream “Live Your Life†below or buy it on iTunes.” – FADER
R&B: Karina Pasian – It’s Whatever (Prod. by Needlz)
I thought this is a pretty cool song from Grammy nominated artist Karina Pasian. The former Def Jam artist just put out a good R&B/Soul EP called “Trips To Venus Vol. I” last December, but this song doesn’t appear on it at all. The beauty of this particular song from the Dominican R&B singer & pianist is the simplicity & the production work from “Needlz” on this joint right here. It’s a crazy daydreamer’s type of song, but I genuinely dig this joint. You may call it “Lazy”, but “It’s Whatever”…..
