The 39th annual Atlanta Jazz Festival kicked off during Memorial Day weekend (May 27th-29th) at historic Piedmont Park.  Three days of great music, food and fun in the sun in the heart of Midtown Atlanta.  The headliner for Friday night was Joi Gilliam who got the festival off to a great start.  Entering the stage with a sequence red dress with one leg out accompanied by beautiful headgear and feathered wings.  You immediately knew that you were in for a show.  Thanking the crowd for supporting her music career that now spans over 20 years.  She did songs from her previous albums like Sunshine & the Rain, Fatal Lovesick Journey all the while backed by drummer Lil John Roberts and a full live band.

Towards the end of her set Joi gave the crowd a treat by performing a new song off the upcoming “Rebekkah Holylove is her name” album.  The track is called “On my way to Berlin” and it got a great response from the huge crowd gathered that night.  Enjoy footage from her performance including the unreleased “On my way to Berlin” track.  Connect with Joi CLICK HERE TO VISIT HER WEBSITE

TenDJiz – “CommoNasm” (Common x Nas Meet Soviet Soul/Jazz)

Mash up Common and Nas and mix in some Soviet soul to get “CommoNasm”…Clever…VERY clever! The liner notes at the Bandcamp or Soundcloud site for this gem should draw you in (like it did me):

“CommoNasm (Common and Nas Meet Soviet Soul/Jazz) is an album created by Miami-based producer/sound engineer TenDJiz by blending the acapellas of Common and Nas with instrumentals based on Soviet soul and jazz samples.”

Enjoy this TenDJiz mash-up, y’all. Looks like mash-ups are the in thing, huh?

R&B/Soul: DJ Kemit – “Funky 8Ball” feat. Frank McComb

One of my favorite DJs in Atlanta & souful producer DJ Kemit continues to amaze me with his work. The homie just celebrated his birthday not too long ago with a big party here in Atlanta, but how did I miss this new joint called “Funky 8-Ball” featuring Frank McComb on the keys that he recently released?  Apparently the track will serve as a teaser of what’s to come from his upcoming album “Everlasting” due July 17th.  The title to Kemit’s upcoming album couldn’t be anymore appropriate because the brotha has been doing it all from touring, producing, & working with damn near every R&B artist with soul in some capacity for almost two decades. I’m gonna have to hit the homie up on his twitter to give him props for keeping the soul going….

A Yellow Man – “3000 Miles Of Youth” (Video)

I was put up on this group called “A Yellow Man” by producer Tall Black Guy’s manager Chaka. It’s always dope when good people put you up on new music you never heard before. After peeping this new video I started to do more research of this group with the native tongues type of vibe, jazzy production, & cool message that flows in tandem with their distinctly european dialects. Check out more from this group under the hood…

R&B/Soul: Freddie Joachim — “Keep Lovin’ feat. Carlitta Durand

Hip Hop, Soul, & Jazz producer Freddie Joachim does it again with another quality soulful R&B banger. I’m lovin’ this new track featuring North Carolina songstress Carlitta Durand called “Keep Lovin'” that will appear on Freddie Joachim’s new project “Fiberglass Kisses” dropping later this month.  There’s also a cool remix to this joint produced by Eric Lau that just hit on itunes as well.  Based off of this dope single & the soulful Eric Lau remix I heard I know I’ll be in line for when the album drops.

De La Soul – “Stakes Is High” (Blue Buttonz Remix)

Spotted this pretty dope remix of De La Soul’s “Stakes Is High” produced by Blue Buttonz over at OKP. This jazzy remix utilizing plucks from a Kalimba is just flat out dope.  Check out more from producer Blue Buttonz via his bandcamp page where there several other creative remixes with his instruments of choice.

Little Dragon Performing at UCLA JazzReggae Festival (Video)

Check out this footage for Sweden’s Little Dragon performing at the UCLA Jazz Reggae festival from last year. The festival is set to kick off again in Cali during Memorial Day weekend for two days May 27th & 28th. Perfect timing for organizers to push this new video of Little Dragon performing from last year so that way fans on the west coast can check out this years lineup of The Roots, Bobby Womack, Shaggy, Don Carlos, Collie Budz, & more….

RE:GENERATION (Movie)

The Re:Generation Music Project is a documentary funded by Hyundai in association with the Grammys as they follow a team of selected DJs, Producers, & artists such as DJ Premier, Skrillex, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights & Mark Ronson as they is all pair up with musical genres that are unfamiliar to them and are assigned the mission of creating something original & unique for the project. We had no idea the documentary was already online but thanks to Soulbounce on the heads up. The documentary is available for free viewing on Hulu as their “Documentary of the Month” for March & April so you best take advantage & sit back for an hour & watch it now.

14KT – “Width” feat. Tony Ozier (Video)

“2011. This is a personal piece I wanted to share with you all. I made it from compiled videos I recorded on my phone. I made the song dedicated to God, but it’s also a dedication to my family and some of the friends He’s blessed me with. As an artist, you can easily get caught up in an endless menu of distractions in life. Having to please people, facing criticism on your creativity, pressures of living up to your potential, pleasing others, image, all the things that can create fear in our lives. However, when you put your thoughts on the things/people you truly love, LOVE will conquer fear. R.I.P. My father, Paul Tucker Jr.” – 14KT

Lupe Fiasco & Bilal Join The ‘Robert Glasper Experiment’ on The David Letterman Show (Video)

While promoting his dope new album “Black Radio”, Robert Glasper brought along Philly soul singer Bilal & Chicago emcee Lupe Fiasco with him on the David Letterman show to perform “Always Shine”.

Elle Varner – Conversational Lush (Mixtape)

Following the success of her critically popular record “Only Want To Give It To You” with J.Cole, R&B songstress Elle Varner delivers her first mixtape “Conversational Lush” which features some key tracks that I found to be pretty dope on here like “WTF”, “Do You Want To”, “Feel Like A Woman”, & the Bill Withers inspired joint called “Runaway”. The beauty in an artist like Elle Varner is her vocal talent & her songwriting which feels very personal to who she is.  Her music conspicuously stands out from the crowded market of R&B chicks trying to make a mark in recent years. Elle Varner’s official album “Perfectly Imperfect” is due to be released later this year, but for now you can listen and/or download the “Conversation Lush” mixtape below…

Mark Ronson – “A La Modeliste” feat. Erykah Badu & Yasiin Bey

Mark Ronson assembles his crew of musicians including Erykah Badu & Mos Def Yasiin Bey for their contribution to the RE:GENERATION Project. RE:GENERATION is a documentary film that follows DJ Premier, Pretty Lights, The Crystal Method, Mark Ronson, and Skrillex as they remix, recreate and re-imagine five traditional styles of music. I’m diggin’ this joint right here, but who’s idea was it for this hook? Probably Erykah’s….Now that’s funky. hahaa!
