Illastrate – “Henny Loggins Show” (EP)
Atlanta based producer Illastrate is one of ‘illest’ producers who’s been consistently releasing quality product on the low for a while now. His masterful & often soulful production credits continues to grow albeit rather quietly to the larger mainstream audiences. As much as he’s known throughout the Atlanta true school & soul scene for his tracks he’s almost equally known amongst those in the know for the wild alter-egos he employs such as “Hoodie Allen” & of course his latest alias inspired by songwriter Kenny Loggins & his love for Hennessy to become “Henny Loggins”. Wasn’t surprised when he chose the latest moniker for ‘SEASON 1’ as the title of the new project series featuring artists Ekundayo, Boog Brown, Stanza, Mike Flo, Yamin Semali, Arablak, & more. If you just want to vibe out to his dope tracks minus all the vocals, Illastrate also provided an instrumental version of the project as well. Listen or download the joints below….

R&B: Jared Evan – “Black & White” feat. Joey Badass (Video)
No time wasted by R&B singer & songwriter Jared Evan in releasing this new video for “Black & White” featuring Joey Badass. The song appears on his new project produced by Statik Selektah called “Boom Bap & Blues” that’s out now. Now I’d like to see him shoot a video for the “Uma Thurman” joint featuring Lil Fame which is probably my favorite off the project…..

Zo! – “This Could Be The Night” ft. Eric Roberson x Darien Brockington x Phonte (Tall Black Guy Remix)
Zo!, Eric Roberson, Darien Brockington, and Phonte team up on the Tall Black Guy remix to Zo!’s 2010 original “This Could Be The Night.” This self-described ‘fly love song’ is the second leak from the “+FE Music: The Reworks” compilation that features remixes from Nicolay, Zo!, 4hero, ?uestlove and James Poyser and more. “+FE Music: The Reworks” is due out February 26, 2013. Zo! has his own album (“ManMade”) coming out this Spring.
R&B: BJ The Chicago Kid – “Honey”
BJ The Chicago Kid has some great music that I’ve been occasionally going back to over the last year like his “Good Good Love” collabo with rap artist Rapsody & my favorite “Good Luv’n” off of his “Pineapple Now-Laters” project. With that said it’s a good thing he’s not one of these artists that’s been constantly throwing out disposable material on the internet every day of the week. His label reps over at Motown are claiming that this new joint “Honey” produced by B!nk is his official first single. Right away when I peeped that producer & singer/songwriter combination I knew this joint was gonna sound good & I wasn’t disappointed. Nice little nods lyrically to Aaliyah’s hit record ‘Rock The Boat’ & the Bee Gee’s heavily sampled 1979 classic ‘Love You Inside Out’.
R&B/Soul: Tweet – “Enough”
Good scoop from SoulBounce. Tweet is finally dropping her EP “Simply Tweet“ after teasing us with weekly #TweetTuesdays leaks last summer. Tweet recently signed to MC Lyte’s DuBose Music Group. So… Lyte doing that work for the Jordan campaign… and the Tweet signing and coming release… Hmm. Nice moves.

R&B: Donell Jones – “Forever”
Chicago’s Donell Jones is back at it again with that REAL R&B music. This is the title track for his upcoming album entitled “Forever” due in May. Judging from the sounds of this joint I’d say Donell is still in great shape musically by bringing nothing but that real R&B instead of switching things up with ‘Trap & B’ or some other musical flavor of the month. This is some true school ‘cruising in the whip late at night’ type of music right here….

R&B/Soul: Raheem DeVaughn – “Fire We Make”
Soul singer Raheem DeVaughn is back with another one of his ‘Radio Raheem Remixes’ of songs that he continues to make greater when he adds his own personal touch to it. This time he does justice to Alicia Keys & Maxwell’s collaboration the ‘Fire We Make’ record. Radio Rah is doing a great job in providing these musical appetizers before the upcoming release of his ‘A Place Called Loveland’ project later this year.
Miguel – “Do You” Reggae ReFix feat. Sammie (Prod. ReFix Kingz)
Like most people that enjoy quality music, Miguel’s stellar “Do You…” track is one of my favorites from his “Kaleidoscope Dream“ album out that’s out now & up for a Grammy award for Best Urban Contemporary album. The production duo “The ReFix Kingz” (Edley Shine & DJ JButtah) add a very excellent reggae flavored dynamic with their remix featuring Atlanta based R&B singer Sammie. This is hot. Definitely diggin’ the Island vibes on this one. In case you’ve never seen the video to the original version you can check it out HERE.

Unsung: Isaac Hayes (Video)
The legendary Isaac Hayes was the subject of TV One’s popular television series “Unsung” last Wednesday night & the show didn’t disappoint in covering the life of one of the greatest icons in black music. The influence & contributions of Isaac Hayes goes deeper than just the music as he was not only a singer, songwriter, musician & producer, but he was an actor & activist as well. Isaac Hayes’ music has also been sampled by countless numbers of hip hop & R&B artists many times over further keeping his legacy alive. If you didn’t catch the episode live like I did on Wednesday then you can watch the full episode on the life of “Black Moses” here on this soulful sunday afternoon.

R&B: Raphael Saadiq – “I’m In Like”
Wowwww!! This song – “I’m In Like” by Raphael Saadiq – is so dope! What can I say, the man is right:
‘This is a song for my friends who want to vibe out to a joint that makes you feel right! No bells, whistles or pretense, just a beautiful song … life in motion. If you wanna sit in the house, ride the Bart, Subway, Metro (or other public transpo), put your headphones on and roll out! That’s what I like to do after I write a song … roll out to it. Enjoy.’
– Raphael Saadiq
