e5193c722bac6b3e98ac.largeThe entrepreneur, world traveler, and party starter DJ Rasta Root does this kind of thing for fun. Check out Root doing his thing on this “June 2013 Hip-Hop Mix” so well. You’ll hear several joints we posted on here (great minds think alike).

DJ RASTA ROOT – JUNE 2013 HIP-HOP MIX (MIXTAPE)

Statik Selektah – “Bring ‘Em Up Dead” feat. Joell Ortiz (Original Onyx Version)

black-ops-zombies-ii-call-of-duty-montage-s-nazi-splinter-cell-539791

“We dump lead like a Britta… Anybody I dap will give anybody a nap!” – Joell Ortiz

Yeah! Ortiz with that grimy murder-murder rhyming. Remember that that aspect was part of the Golden Era, too. Gangsta rap on the West Coast; Gutter/Horrorcore music on the East, with each influencing other areas. Click play and listen to what Statik Selektah almost left on the cutting room floor. A track laced with samples from 90s grimiest Hip-Hop icons Onyx, the feel of it stirred well by the lyrical sh!t talk of Slaughterhouser Joell Ortiz. Hearing it might just make you wanna “Throw Ya Gunz” or “Slam” (dunh-dunh-nuh, dunh-dunh-nuh)! This original Onyx version of “Bring ‘Em Up Dead” was left off Statik’s “Extended Play” release, but it is available for purchase right now.

Yasiin Bey x Preservation – “REcstatic” (Remix Album)

yasiin-bey-recstatic-download-lead

‘Three key steps to leading a rewarding and enriched life: (1) Wake up. (2) Be awesome. (3) LISTEN TO PRESERVATION.’

– Yasiin Bey

Suffice it to say, Yasiin is a fan of his tour DJ Preservation. Evidence of Bey’s trust in his DJ: their remix to the album “Ecstatic” – entitled “REcstatic” – has Preservation all over it (with the only exception being Yasiin’s rapping over a Minnesota production for “Black Fantastic,” which replaced “Casa Bey” on the original project). You can download the entire “REcstatic” project for FREE from the Mon Dieu Music site. Just join the e-list, and the zip is all yours!

R&B/Soul: Mayer Hawthorne – “Reach Out Richard” (Produced By Pharrell Williams)

Beauty-Gifts-Men-Fathers-Day-2012
Pharrell Williams produced a helluva nice track for Mayer Hawthorne, who truly delivered on this tribute single – “Reach Out Richard” – for his pop.

‘A new song for my Father from my upcoming album “Where Does This Door Go.”

The album is due out July 16, 2013; you can pre-order it now below.

Alternative: Thundercat – “Lotus and the Jondy”

The ThundercatsRecorded in Adrian Younge’s studio, Los Angeles (California, USA) bassist/songwriter/vocalist Stephen Bruner aka Thundercat takes us plenty of places on this track “Lotus & The Jondy.” There is structure to this single – in that it has a beginning and end, instrumentation and vocals… But the flow is very fluid. Organic to say the least… with Thundercat’s chanting lyrically throughout and drummer Thomas Pridgen going off in the latter half. Check out this auditory experiment from the album “Apocalypse” (due out On July 9, 2013).

“You’re not more ethnic if you’re darker…” – Taken from OWN’s ‘Dark Girls’ Series Premiere

Does it take a White man to tell Black folk what we should have been saying to each other for decades? Perhaps so.

‘In Dark Girls, Hip-Hop author and journalist Soren Baker, a white man who’s married to an African-American woman, describes his early attraction to women of all races—and shares his father’s reaction. Plus, another man in an interracial relationship discusses his wife’s skin tone.’

Haziq Ali – “Transitioning” (Video)

“My Father’s Day tribute. I hope you dig it. We shot at my sister’s wedding.”Haziq Ali

Evidenced throughout the lyrics: Haziq loved his father. 6ix Shoota directed the tribute video above, giving it a home movie feel that supports the message’s delivery and makes it that much more real. Play this video for “Transitioning” by Haziq Ali. If you love your dad, or lost him (or anyone) too soon, you will be touched. On second thought, you’ll probably get a little misty regardless.

The KKK Kept Patrick Ewing From Attending UNC (Video)

‘There was a big Ku Klux Klan rally in North Carolina when I was there. And I’m like…you know what…I’m not coming down here!’

Patrick Ewing, on the phone with Dan Patrick

Well, Patrick Ewing’s first choice was Georgetown University anyway. But I bet that KKK ‘welcome ceremony’ didn’t help UNC’s recruiting effort. Note to any remaining racists out there… you can really cost your program something serious with your ignorance. Like future NBA all-star center serious. Wow! Watch.
