Bill Gates’ Top 5 Recommended Reads For This Summer (Video)

Look. If you know better, do better… right? So, if someone who is doing way better (like genius billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates) is hitting you off with knowledge – of any kind – maybe consider the advice, right? To help you get down that ‘do better’ trail.

If you’re looking for something to read over the next few months, you can’t go wrong with these books recommended by Bill Gates: “Leonardo da Vinci,” by Walter Isaacson, “Everything Happens for a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved,” by Kate Bowler, “Lincoln in the Bardo,” by George Saunders, “Origin Story: A Big History of Everything,” by David Christian, and “Factfulness” by Hans Rosling, with Ola Rosling and Anna Rosling Ronnlund.

Neil deGrasse Tyson With Some “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry” And A Word For Climate Science Deniers (Video)

Great talk. Plus: Neil deGrasse Tyson with the booooom statement of, like, the decade or something! To all the climate change deniers: How was it that we made all kinds of plans, and reacted with all kinds and fervor and enthusiasm, to the Eclipse [Across America] – a phenomenon predicted by science – but NOT even flinch or flitter at the very real, very scientifically-founded warnings of pending planet-wide doom due to climate change (global warming, whatever you wanna call it)? Is it because beach chairs will become useless for the beachfront after the ocean level rises? Maybe because you’ll need good galoshes to go anywhere downtown in NYC? C’mon son!

Neil deGrasse Tyson weighs in on why climate change is subject to political debate and examines the privilege of wondering about space in “Astrophysics for People in a Hurry.”
– Comedy Central

Okay, they are probably not reading this post or watching The Daily Show on Comedy Central… So if you know a denier, please share this.

(Or share with the like-minded. I don’t mind having an ‘amen corner’ on this.)

Man. RIP Prodigy. Seeing this… Still hard to believe that he is just not somewhere cooking up another hit or something. Well, here’s something though. All ingredients straight out the local Bodega.

Really thinking about copping the cookbook; maybe just because.

Fellas, if you are ‘blessed’ below you are blessed for sho’ no matter how bad your life might go. Just paraphrasing some of the hilarious, but real, talk that this clip starts with. And then we quickly move to Kevin’s dad getting hit with an axe (wait, WHAT??!)… and it keeps getting realer, still real funny, while slipping in some real motivation & inspiration.

Prodigy Shares And Shows How He Cooks BBQ Salmon (Video)

Verrrry interesting. A recipe demo for the Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook that Prodigy is pushing. Jesse Ventura Speaks On Black People Being The True Forerunners Of American Music, Colin Kaepernick’s Courageous Stand And More (Video)

Whoa. If former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura and renegade for life was the type to be ‘scurred’ it would be for speaking up like this. Fascinating interview! Kicks off his time with Heather B on Sway In The Morning by showing a direct link between music that came from Led Zeppelin and the earlier Chitlin Circuit stuff from underappreciated Black music legend Robert Johnson.

All American music originates from [the Black people] that were brought here.
Jesse Ventura

Watch as Ventura goes in with the knowledge, his life experiences, political experiences & views (esp. on the upcoming presidential election and voting FOR someone, not AGAINST someone)… how he came to learn “what it feels like to be a Black man in America”… the Colin Kaepernick situation… his legalize-it book “Marijuana Manifesto” and so much more!

Free State Of Jones (Trailer)

Should be really dope. I remember author Sally Jenkins’ appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart years ago… talking about “The State Of Jones” book (see that here). Great story. The trailer above teases a movie that seems like it will do the story justice.

Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (THE HUNGER GAMES, SEABISCUIT, PLEASANTVILLE), and starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. FREE STATE OF JONES is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy.

Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.

Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

In Theaters June 24, 2016.

Pioneer Supermodel Beverly Johnson Talks About Being Drugged By Bill Cosby, A One Night Stand With Mike Tyson And More (Video)

Okay, she is there because she is promoting a book. But c’mon son… you KNOW Sway would ask about what she said about The Coz and the druggings (being that Beverly Johnson was one of the first to affirm that Bill was dropping ’em with the drinks… allegedly). And the book is chock full of ‘Scandal’ level messiness besides that – rivalries between models, messing with that ‘white girl’ (e.g. cocaine), Mike Tyson… Verrrry interesting.

From being the first Black model on the cover of Vogue to building an international empire, the lovely Beverly Johnson stopped by Sway in the Morning to talk about her new book, The Face That Changed it All: A Memoir.

Politics/Economics: America Hates Its Poor (Video)

The hard truth about America: We are at war. All of us. It’s internal… and just barely civil. We have already seen an occupation of strategic grounds (Wall Street) and the battle lines have been drawn. But don’t think Democrat/Liberal vs. Republican/Conservative (there are battlefields within parties anyway)… and don’t think (as we have) of haves vs. have-nots… The truth is simple, but not because it is oversimplified. It is hard because it is harsh. It is hard, like difficult – not to understand, but to understand how citizens/humans/institutions could allow this and allow it to continue. And it is hard, because it will be difficult to end the war. To think, all this from reading an article (that you should read, too) at Salon.com…

This is an excerpt from the just released second edition of Noam Chomsky’s “Occupy: Class War, Rebellion and Solidarity,” edited by Greg Ruggiero and published by Zuccotti Park Press.

An article that recently came out in Rolling Stone, titled “Gangster Bankers: Too Big to Jail,” by Matt Taibbi, asserts that the government is afraid to prosecute powerful bankers, such as those running HSBC. Taibbi says that there’s “an arrestable class and an unarrestable class.” What is your view on the current state of class war in the U.S.?

– Salon

So, that’s how we should view the sides in our modern civil war: The arrestable vs. the unarrestable… and you KNOW most of the sh!t the unarrestable (e.g. the 1% and those protected by them) gets away with would land most of us in prison. Now, no one is saying ‘be mad at the haves for having’ … no more so than you want anyone less fortunate being mad at you for walking/driving by when you have change/time to spare. Nah, be mad at how they do you… how they lie to you. You know, the stuff that you’d be mad about if someone did it right to your face… because they DO THAT SH!T… ev-er-y day! Watch the clip above (from a ‘have’ who has chosen to give a Ted Talk on the truth). Read the article we read… Hell, read the book it references (both linked below)… Then take time to think and decide for yourself, while you can; before that comes under attack!

Dice Raw Documentary: “Jimmies Back” (Video)

“The war on drugs is not a war on drugs. It’s a war on thugs.”

Words from Dice Raw, who is providing some of the ‘thug combatants’ from his hometown (Philly) a tool and a platform with and from which they can counterattack – a LP and documentary. Shout to OK Player for bringing this important work from this down-for-the-cause artist to light. Check out the documentary short above and how you can get involved. Check out the wisdom from OKP, too:

1. Stay out of prison – Crime never pays–and street life will eventually catch up with you.

2. Be informed – There are root causes behind the unfathomable numbers of black men and women in prison – things like lack of jobs, poor education, inadequate homes and ills within the justice system are leading factors for why people commit crimes.

3. Get involved! – Hundreds of organizations and movements are popping up across the country and working on the issue of Mass Incarceration every day. Join groups like the @ACLU or @WomenOfWAMI to stay in the mix of the solution.

4. Support the “Jimmy’s Back” LP & documentary – Give ‘em some props, artists and musicians have always been champions for the underdog. Pre-order Dice Raw’s “Jimmy’s Back” on August 4th and look out for the official release on August 19th.
