Black Thought Speaks On Acting Career, Lifestyle Changes, & Working On A Blues Album (Video)

It’s rather rare to catch Black Thought aka Mr. Tariq Trotter doing solo interviews.  The talented Mr. Trotter is visually known as the lyrical frontman for the Legendary Roots Crew but compared to Questlove’s omnipresence in the media you would almost assume Tariq was nothing short of a hermit.  It’s not everyday you get some interviews where he speaks on upcoming solo projects & what’s going on with his life. Check out the interview with Uber Urban as they catch up with Tariq as he speaks on doing a hip hop blues album, lifestyle changes, & more.

Ayentee – Mos Common Thought (Frankensteined Vol.1) (Mixtape)

DOWNLOAD: AYENTEE – MOS COMMON THOUGHT (FRANKENSTEINED VOL.1)
Here is the first installment of a series called “Frankensteined.” The project’s Bay Area orchestrator, Ayentee, is a self-described out-of-the-box producer who set out to redefine “the remix” as we know it. “Mos Common Thought (Frankensteined Vol.1)” blends three unique emcees from three unique regions of the United States – Mos Def (Brooklyn), Common (Chicago), and Black Thought (Philadelphia) – over melodic beats to create a brand new listening experience. Listen to the result. And, hey, enjoy a “Bonus Track” on the house! You’re welcome.

Classic Clips: The Roots and A Tribe Called Quest Freestyle

Illadeph meets QB in this freestyle featuring Rahzel on the beat, with Black Thought, Consequence and Phife Dawg on the mics.  As usual, Rahzel kills the beatbox while Ali Shaheed Muhammed and Questlove chill and groove to the beat.  Would’ve been nice to hear what Q-Tip had to say, though.  Guess time was up on Lorna’s Corner.

Black Thought Says MLK’s ‘Dream’ Is Almost a ‘Nightmare’ Similar to a Boondocks Episode (Video)

The team over at ALLHIPHOP caught up with The Roots frontman Black Thought who spoke about the great things about Martin Luther King Jr’s dream, but in contrast to the notion of at what cost today in 2012. I don’t disagree with Black Thought’s analogy that Aaron McGruder’s “Return Of The King” episode of The Boondocks is similar to what’s going on today with our communities. Pay attention to the interview so you can fully understand the context from which Mr. Tariq Trotter & The Wurx are speaking…

Black Thought Speaks on his past Selling Drugs & Being Kicked Out Of School (Video)

Black Thought spoke on some of the rough times in his life from a brief period selling drugs in Philly & being kicked out of school. Knowing Tariq Trotter he’s never been one of those types of cats to glorify that part of his past & even admits he wasn’t the most successful in that business. Black Thought also explains why some people assumed he was also from Detroit at one time. More video below from the interview with Questlove & Black Thought under the hood as they promote the new album ‘unDun’ which is available now…..

J. Period First Time In Tokyo Japan

While checking out my homegirl Daisha Hunter’s new hosting gig over at Future Sounds TV in Japan, I ran across this interview with DJ J. Period. Producer & remixer J. Period made his first trip to Japan recently & spoke about the creative mixtapes he put together for Nas, Lauryn Hill, The Roots, Q-Tip, Kanye West, Mary J. Blige, & more. Whenever he’s not crafting mixtapes, J. Period is the official DJ for Black Thought of the Legendary Roots crew when Mr. Tariq Trotter is on solo missions doing those live mixtape shows.

The Roots of The Roots: Questlove & Black Thought Use DNA to Trace Their African Heritage (Video)

My brother & I were just speaking about tracing our family history as we’re two of the eldest able bodied & living members of our family that are still around. Looking at this video of Questlove & Black Thought getting their DNA traced back to the actual tribes they are from in Africa is all too inspiring. I guess we can stop procrastinating & check via AfricanAncestry.com

The Roots – “Life, Love, & Loot”

Inspired by the Captain Morgan commercial campaign of “Life, Love, & Loot”, Philly’s finest The Roots flipped the musical theme of the liquor brand’s primary song into a dope ass joint with a great classic rock feel. Black Thought aka Tariq Trotter kills this joint on the vocals so well it sounds like he may have outdid Lenny Kravitz himself at his own signature vocal style. The song won’t appear on the The Roots upcoming album “undun” due December 6th, but damn this joint is dope even if for a commercial campaign. Check out the Spin Magazine article with Questlove regarding the project & listen to the track below. Some Behind The Scenes video after the jump…. Glasses Up!

Nikki Jean – ‘Millon Star Hotel’ feat. Lupe & Black Thought

Nikki Jean has been dropping gems here & there over the last few years that really caught my attention enough to keep checking for her.  Her new album ‘Pennies In A Jar’ just dropped on Tuesday the 12th. One of the key songs from her album is this joint right here called ‘Million Star Hotel’ featuring Lupe & The Roots frontman Black Thought. Don’t get it twisted though. Her album isn’t a R&B/Hip Hop album with a multitude of guest appearances, but guest appearances from quality conscious artists like Lupe & Black Thought make sense for Nikki Jean whose sound ranges from classic Motown, classic pop, & on back to Philly soul.  Check out the track & preview the album from itunes.

MTV caught up with Rakim & The Roots as they performed a series of shows up there to celebrate almost 25 years since the release of Eric B & Rakim’s Paid In Full album which was released back in ’87.  Black Thought & Rakim speak upon how things have changed in Hip Hop & longevity…

OkayPlayerTV: The Roots Picnic (Video)

Although there were plenty of videos that surfaced on the web focusing on Philly’s largest summer festival & the many performers that graced the stage, The Roots crew’s Okayplayer team dropped a high quality recap over the weekend. As a Philly native it’s amazing for me to see what the The Roots annual picnic on Festival Pier on Penn’s Landing has grown into. The Roots continue to make me proud to be from Philly not only for the music they present to the world, but in the many ways they reach back for Philly artists, Philly fans, the city, & the community at large. Check out the video recap….Okay Player?
