The Judge (Trailer)

Woooo! “The Judge” going to be a SMASH for all kinds of awards and acclaim! I hope moviegoers can take a movie, with lots of heart, that shows Robert Downey Jr. acting without an Iron Man suit on.

[Big city attorney] Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) returns to his childhood home where his estranged father, the town’s judge (Robert Duvall), is suspected of murder. He sets out to discover the truth and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before.

Just look at the cast rundown at the end of the trailer. The story of dad’s-in-trouble-but-he-don’t-want-your-DAMN-help-but-you-gotta-help should be enough. But I know that that cast WILL deliver the goods in dramatic fashion. We get this would-be masterpiece in theaters October 2014.

Divided Time (Documentary Preview Trailer)

A sneak peak at the latest from Atlanta filmmaker W. Feagins Jr.? Um yeah, gotta check for that ASAP. And now…you get your peak!

“Divided Time” explores how several Hip-Hop artists attempt to find a balance between the responsibilities of fatherhood and the demands of pursuing their dreams.

Also noted some buzz around the Interwebs about the Feagins film “Underexposed” (we posted on it here). A screening at Philly’s Black Star Film Festival. Nice!

Adult Rappers: The Neverending Saga Of Age And Relevance (Trailer)

Just had a Father’s Day. For all you Dads (and grinders that know a Dad), here’s the line you know you must walk. You can be into doing your thing, but not so much that it takes you away from fulfilling your responsibilities (like caring for your family and such). Here is a film that relates to those who live walking that line in their Hip-Hop grind.

Most of them tour 200 days out of the year, but they’re not money pillowcase-packing MC’s spitting to sold-out stadiums. They got skills, but they also have car payments, mortgages, debt, and mouths to feed. They are adults and rap is their livelihood. Artists in the film, like Murs and R.A. The Rugged Man, could’ve left the rap game when they hit the aging fork in the road, but they pushed their careers straight through. The film examines what aging rappers’ lives are like when they’re not on stage with a mic in their hand. What you won’t find watching this film are punch-line-swinging egos. The rappers interviewed are amazingly candid.

These frames are the opening credits/titles…doubling as a trailer for the film. Keep your eyes out for the whole shebang. Looks interesting. Shout out to Bad Magics for putting such dopeness on my radar once again!

Koch Brothers Exposed (Documentary)

David and Charles Koch (pronounced like ‘Coke’), the oil industry’s billionaire brothers that pretty much powered the Tea Party Movement and the recent emergence of the Republican Party’s ‘return to true Conservatism.’ You’d think that most Republicans would position themselves in the ‘it is what it is’ or say ‘I approve this message’ camps. Most do. But viewer-supported news network says “Koch Brothers Exposed” is “The Chilling New Documentary Republicans Don’t Want You to See.” So [per Democracy Now], at least some Republicans would prefer to not be linked to the Kochs. And those would certainly not want a film evidencing the Kochs’ influence (and naming politicians who are being ‘influenced’) to come out. Congressperson Candice Miller (Republican Representative from Michigan) tried to block an unveiling event for the documentary at the U.S. Capitol, claiming it could violate House rules (being debuted at taxpayer-funded facilities) and “cross the line into partisan politics.”

The documentary shows how the Koch brothers have used their vast fortunes to oppose government programs such as Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, as well as obstruct efforts to raise the minimum wage, tackle climate change and expand voting rights. Democracy Now talks to the film’s director, Robert Greenwald, founder and president of Brave New Films, in its writeup (linked below). The full original release is embedded above.

Deep. Check it out. And considering that the film, and Democracy Now, are fighting the rich and powerful to bring real issues and news to light… maybe consider donating to the cause and/or getting some friends together to watch, discuss, and empower yourselves.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater Keeps His ‘Promise To Rose’ (Documentary)

After the jump… couldn’t resist.

I’m buying moms a house. The mantra of every youngster man who makes it to the NFL. Suffice it to say that college football standout Teddy Bridgewater is among those ‘made men’ about to cash out and repay mom. But he promised mom a different gift as a kid: a pink Cadillac. Sure, being momma is enough to warrant a car, if you get to the NFL. Surviving cancer though; Teddy throws a pink caddy Escalade on the pile already…before the NFL draft! Jackpot, Momma Rose. Great story, documented visually by Spike Lee.

When Teddy Bridgewater was in the 3rd grade he promised his mother, Rose, he’d get her a Pink Cadillac Escalade when he became a professional football player. After a lot of tears and hard work, Teddy made good on his promise.

Iverson (Documentary Trailer)

Allen Iverson was more than a ‘thugged out’ pro basketball player. The impact he had on sports, fashion, commercial advertising, Hip-Hop… Dude was a cultural icon. True ‘The Answer’ was hated on as often as he was lauded; but you had to (at least) respect his game. And you know you remember when he became that dude (hint: search ‘Iverson crosses Jordan‘). Yup, jooked Michael out of his Jordans!

And then… there is the rest… Well, a documentary film about AI debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival, giving viewers a more holistic look at [what at least some will say is] a misunderstood sports celeb. Check out the trailer above.

Want To Help “The Legend of Swee’ Pea” Documentary Get Published? Here’s How (Video)

“People thought I was gonna die at 18 years old…”
Lloyd “Swee’ Pea” Daniels

Lloyd “Swee’ Pea” Daniels is a basketball park legend!
– Pretty much everyone in the clip

Funding for a street baller who made it through hard times, drug charges, getting shot… and eventually into the NBA is storyboard life that screams documentary, right? Well, filmmaker Benjamin May is trying, but without an income stream the movie’s scream will fade away unanswered. The bright side is that the Kickstarter campaign is 60% funded; well over halfway, though not in the home stretch. You can help push it to completion with as little as a dollar and a web share.

Watch the clip above, and see what you are getting for your money. The film promises a look behind the legend label to expose the humanity of the man in telling the story of the basketball prodigy. Contribute at the Kickstarter link below. You can watch a message from May there, too.
