In episode 7 of DJ Jazzy Jeff’s web series ‘Vinyl Destination’ we find the Philly turntable legend & his crew finishing up their middle eastern tour in places like Bahrain, Dubai, & more. This particular episode finds DJ Jazzy Jeff rocking a number of parties, taking in some Formula 1 racing with race car driver Lewis Hamilton, & rocking for U.S troops stationed in Abu Dhabi two hours outside of Dubai.

I had dope producer Lex Boogie & the outstanding visual artist Goldi Gold to speak on their collaborative instrumental project “Sharks In The Golden Pond” last Saturday during The Beatz & Lyrics Show. “Conceptually the project can best be described as a ‘visual instrumental’. Lex Boogie from the Bronx, known for his soulfully, raw, Boom bap, , drum kicks and snares hails from his name sake, the boogie down Bronx. Artist Goldi gold best known for his staple life like, one of a kind graphic illustrations hails from New Jersey. When the two got together in Atlanta they immediately saw the value in each others work and shared a similar work ethic. The project maybe the perfect instrument to take you from the freeze of this past winter to the unpredictability of the Spring. Collaboratively this project is symbolic to the drive and vision of these two talented Hip Hop heads.”

The trio discussed all things related to DJ’ing, from Jeff’s background to how he became one of the most in-demand DJ’s in the world, including his philosophy on a DJ’s responsibility, the rise of DJ’s in popular music (while it seems to wither within hip-hop), and whether or not “real DJ’s” should take requests. Brand new video by Justin Timberlake called “Mirrors” that he says was inspired by his grandparents. The Timbaland produced song appears on JT’s new album called ‘The 20/20 Experience’ that according to early predictions is expected to sell close to 800,000k copies the first week. Those are great numbers when you think of just how long it’s been since he’s put out some new music in addition to him recently announcing that he has a Volume 2 to this album that will be released later this year.

It’s crazy to think of all the music New Edition has been involved with over the years as a group & even with their respective solo careers, spin-off groups, & artists they’ve mentored. I can remember that period well when New Edition first came out & ‘Candy Girl’ was their first big hit. Check out this classic clip from 1983 when they first appeared on Soul Train. The music was good but I did get a good laugh looking at this video of the outfits & the way they looked back then……
