We’ve all been waiting for Jay Electronica’s album on Roc Nation to drop for so long that many people were beginning to believe it was a myth that it was even completed. In an recent interview Questlove, de facto leader of the legendary Roots crew, says Jay-Z told him that Jay Elect’s new album is his favorite album this year, but he’s having difficulty finding a single. My brother & I were just speaking about tracing our family history as we’re two of the eldest able bodied & living members of our family that are still around. Looking at this video of Questlove & Black Thought getting their DNA traced back to the actual tribes they are from in Africa is all too inspiring. Questlove Stops By Amoeba Music In Los Angeles For Some Sounds (Video)

Everytime I’m in L.A. there’s usually a few places I ALWAYS stop by before I leave. One of my key stops used to be the Fat Beats record store on Melrose (RIP). It’s been tough with record stores closing around the country but thankfully Amoeba music is still open. That’s why it’s important to continually support institutions like Amoeba whenever you come to Los Angeles or any of their other locations. Last time I stopped in the the LA store I spent a few hours checking out & purchasing music & DVDs. The Roots drummer Questlove stopped by the store to let the people know ‘What’s In His Bag”. Big shout out to my homegirl Mona Lisa who works over there at Amoeba’s LA location.

The Story Behind Little Brother’s Debut Album, “The Listening” (Documentary)

When you hear them together, it sounds right…
This is how dope documentaries get done! Okay, so at 11 minutes it’s more like a mini-doc… but just right. Frame the story as a ‘making of’ but drop all kinds of gems and jewels of history (group and Hip-Hop) along the way.
Started in a college dorm room by a group of North Carolina Central students in 2001, the Justus League collective and offshoot trio Little Brother defined the sound of Durham Hip-Hop for years to come, constructing a style altogether distinct from everything to the north and south. This level of innovation turned heads with some of Hip-Hop’s biggest names, and the members of Little Brother (9th Wonder, Big Pooh and Phonte) have gone on to work with superstars like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Jay-Z, Dr. Dre and Questlove, who appears in the documentary.

Listeners tuned into the Questlove Supreme podcast this past Wed heard Snoop Dogg reveal that the original beat for ‘Nuthin But A G Thang’ was the famous intro beat to Southside Movement’s ‘I Been Watchin You.’ Snoop started rapping the first few bars, which left me wanting to hear the whole track. The fam kept growing… and the brothers James (Poyser and Yancey) rounded out the core… but the story certainly doesn’t stop there…
In 1998, the Neo-Soul movement was near its peak when a collective of like-minded artists came together to push the wave even higher. They called themselves the Soulquarians, and before the decade ended they’d help birth some of the modern era’s greatest recordings.

The Rock Soul R&B Funk Pop music world was rocked to its mantle and core today as news of the passing of a legend spread: The Purple Rocker, Prince, suddenly left this earthly plane today. Details are still being revealed, and we certainly need the time to process the information and our feelings; but we have the gist. We know, sadly, the mourning can begin.
Only now can we truly know what it will be like to hear ‘that’ Prince song/album/collection, knowing that he is no longer with us. At least with Prince… He knew… he HAD to know… that he was and will forever be loved & admired by millions; and acclaimed at every strata of the industry – casual listener to sternest critic. We still cannot believe it. With great sadness but fondly cherished memories and thankfulness in our hearts, we at JayForce.com salute the recently departed Phife (aka Malik Boyce Taylor). Hip-Hop Nation stand up, salute and reminisce. You could just surf this site, imagine all the Phife-related posts removed, and get an idea of how deep the loss of the Phifer cuts. But you know what, the Tribe’s Five-Footer is not ‘lost’ to us; nor will he ever be. Remember how he spoke to and spoke life to J Dilla and Baatin in the Hereafter in his “Dear Dilla” tribute track a while back? Family, you can do the same thing even now; to and for whomever you have lost.
