0017th – “Car Time” (Picasso Baby Freestyle)
New Orleans’ latest Hip-Hop heroes 0017th doing lyrical artwork – another “Picasso Baby” freestyle (we’ve posted several here) over the track originally produced by Timbaland. The crew calls this joint “Car Time” – the title coming from neighborhood slang for calling timeout during street football games as cars roll through. Expect this on the forthcoming 0017th mixtape “Wrappin” (due out October 17, 2013). You can get this single via FREE download link below.

Tanya Morgan – “Never Too Much” feat. Nitty Scott, MC (Prod. By 6th Sense) [Video]
True school Hip-Hop staple Tanya Morgan with visuals for “Never Too Much” (produced by 6th Sense). This is the latest look for the duo’s LP “Rubber Souls” (out now). An especially good look… with the feature from super sexy Nitty Scott, MC. Video director credit to Leona the Strange.
Deltron 3030 – “Melding Of The Minds” feat. Zach De La Rocha
Deltron 3030 rocking out on the track with Zack De La Rocha (former lead of Rage Against The Machine). This single is a “Melding Of The Minds†as the duo prepares to drop their LP “Event II” (due out September 30, 2013, pre-order at iTunes). Good ‘rock rap’ – good preparation for an album that boasts contributions from a range of folks as varied as Damon Albarn (2nd generation rocker) to Joseph Gordon-Levitt (actor) to David Cross (comedian/actor).

Comedy: Big Booty Bongos (Video) [NSFW]
Jorge Perez Gonzalez is my new hero! He is literally beating that azz like a drum! Knowing that musicians get to some level of status and get azz as a result, here’s a tongue in cheek video of a percussionist who “started from the bottom”… now it’s here. Watching this a couple more times, you know for research, I chuckled less and started asking questions: Is visualizing something like this where drummers came up with ‘hitting the skins’ when they play? Did that leak into the hood as vernacular? How in the hell did he ask these honeyz to be his ‘instruments’? What do they look like in the face? Was the post-performance lotion rubdown (for real, watch to the end) part of the ‘payment’?
Yeah, you MUST watch… just NOT at work (NSFW). Too much to explain if the boss walks by.
Kanye West Explains The True Musical Direction Of ‘Yeezus’ on BBC Radio With Zane Lowe (Video)
There’s some people who I’ve heard say that Kanye West’s new album ‘Yeezus’ was not very good, but often times I find the people making that assessment ONLY listen to rap & suffer from having a very limited worldview & musical palette. I have friends here in the states & overseas who love the ‘Yeezus’ album’s alternative & experimental musical direction. I dig the record but it’s important for me to note that I don’t listen to it with a hip hop enthusiast’s ear. Great artists are supposed to go against the grain of what everyone else is doing no matter if the final critiques are good or bad. Needless to say I was not surprised to hear BBC Radio host Zane Lowe rave about the album to Kanye in this in-depth interview as well. From many people I know around the world the ‘Yeezus’ album is very popular because it’s not a modern day rap album musically. The album strays from the typical ‘trap sound’ permeating commercial radio airwaves in the states & sticks out within Kanye’s own catalog. Check out the video above as this is just part 1 of a 4 part interview. Click, Print, Gun: The Inside Story Of The 3D-Printed Gun Movement (Video)
Cody R. Wilson is a 25-year-old University of Texas law student working to build semiautomatic weapons using 3D printers. VICE recently produced the above video profile of Wilson, his efforts to 3D-print guns, and his views on fighting gun control.
“Whatever your thoughts on gun control, it’s impossible to deny that the 3D-printed gun movement is something that doesn’t fit into the current legal framework. It’s either exciting or scary–or perhaps both–and that polarity is something Wilson recognizes, and which he knows how to bend to his advantage.”

Founder Ali Mahmoud Speaks On Alif Laam Meem – America’s First Muslim Fraternity (Video)
This looks interesting.
Ali Mahmoud shares the origins story of AΛM, aka Alif Laam Meem, the first and only nationwide Muslim fraternity in the United States. Though the things that come to mind typically associated with fraternity life probably turn off most followers of Islam, Founder and Executive President Mahmoud provides insight on the organization and why it might benefit those who belong to it.
“Why would any Muslim want to join a fraternity? …There’s some really good connections that build up over time in a fraternity… Some great leaders, Martin Luther King, was part of a fraternity. And just the human need to make friends… there was a void that needed to be filled… some kind of way for a Muslim male… [to live a] lifestyle that is synthesized with an organic college social experience.”
– Ali Mahmoud
You can learn more about AΛM by visiting the frat’s website – almfrat.com – and by watching the information brief after the jump.
J. Cole – “Crooked Smile” feat. TLC (Video)
This is an impactful cut (and video) off J. Cole’s “Born Sinner” LP. “Crooked Smile” features legendary R&B act TLC. Of course, you’ll watch to the end because it’s Cole. But this one will get you! Remember to breathe midway through, and pay attention to the background music as the video draws to a close. American law enforcement should reconsider a lot of things. Deep.
J-Live – “Headband” (Freestyle)
‘To reach the top they stoop so low…’ – J-Live
J-Live does some freestyle work on the B.O.B. track “Headband.” J-Live ain’t mad, he’s just calling out the fake… and the folks that allow fakeness to continue. Shots! Emcees get your bars tight. Turns out there’s some more fire spit over tracks… other than response after response to Kendrick’s “Control” verse. Y’all know that’s squashed, right (see the Arsenio Hall – Kendrick Lamar interview here)? Anyway, check out J-Live going in on one.
Comedy: Everything Is Samuel L. Jackson’s Fault (Video)
‘F##k You, Samuel Jackson!’ Hahahaaa! This ‘Funny Or Die’ skit is hilarious. Still manages to make a good point. Parents raise your kids, Samuel is just acting in movies you LET them watch. If he’s on the movie’s poster, maybe you shouldn’t let your kids watch. ‘YES, THEY DESERVE TO DIE AND I HOPE…’ you watch this funny clip!
Kendrick Lamar: ‘Good Kid’ From The West Coast Tours The Far East (Video)
“…26 and getting to see Japan, Tokyo, and Hong Kong… and getting to do it with Dre… my album reaching platinum… I don’t take that for granted.”
– Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick has done some great interviews, and his first interview from Asian is another gem. On Beats By Dre’s Asia tour, the ‘Bob Dylan‘ of modern Hip-Hop shared first impressions in (of) the Far East and speaks on his gratefulness to tour with his idol Dr. Dre, humble appreciation to the fans for a million purchases (and counting) of his debut album “good kid, m.A.A.d city” and more.
Vinyl Destination | Ep. 19: Vancouver, Canada… That’s A Wrap… Season Finale With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)
Man. Even with your bros, even rolling in a luxury tour bus… the road can get old. And too long a trip across the Canadian outback, it can get COLD! Same crappy food… crazy sound setups… gotta ask why a deejay does what he does sometimes. Then, take another look… at the beauty everywhere. The people partying everywhere. It is what Jazzy Jeff, Skillz and the crew were meant to do. Wrapping Canada in Vancouver, with quick stop in Seattle to get the mixer fixed… then a New Year’s Eve extravaganza featuring a drum and DJ set (none other than fellow Philly native Questlove on the drums). THAT’s a season finale! Watch.

Sexual Healing: The Marvin Gaye Story (Extended Trailer)
This trailer is a stirring first look at the Marvin Gaye biopic “Sexual Healing.” Jesse L. Martin – remember dude from ‘Law & Order’ (without any letters after it)? He’s starring as Marvin Gaye… and on that ‘Law & Order’ vein, Martin’s former ‘L&O’ cast mate S. Epatha Merkerson plays Alberta Gaye. A host of other players put in good work; but the actor playing Marvin’s father – Dwight Henry as Marvin Gaye Sr… whew! The tension!
The biopic video was set to be released April 1, 2014, but funding issues have halted production since June 2013. No word heard on the finishing of this flick yet. We can only hope this work gets done, in the can, and onto the screen soon.
Klaus Layer – “Come Back” feat. Blu x Scienze
Klaus Layer (alias Captain Crook)… born in Germany, diehard fan of 90’s Hip-Hop music, proponent of the local graffiti scene… draws on all areas of life and art when he creates. His latest creation – “The Adventures of Captain Crook” – is a quality project that includes this jewel “Come Back” featuring Blu and Scienze. Jazz-infused boom-bap. Flows with the 90’s feel. Klaus did Layers of good stuff with this production.
