The Bodega Brovas – ‘Now Or Never’

Congratulations to the homies Headkrack, Travii the 7th, & Keynote on their recent signing to HiPNOTT Records. Also big up to Kevin Nottingham for doing the damn thing repping for indy artists via his blog & now with the new label venture dedicated to artists on the come up. I had the Bodega Brovas on my radio show I think early last year & their vibe immediately takes me to that fun style of hip hop involving call & response crowd participation along with lyricism. They are like a 2011 version of the Cold Crush Brothers but with a few less members & a name change to the ‘Bodega Brovas’. They have a new album slated to drop in the fall of this year. Check out the song below & after the jump I included some video from when the fellas took a trip over the pond in their mini-movie ‘American B-Boys In London’.
J Dilla: Behind The Beat Poster

The picture above is of J Dilla working in his home studio in Los Angeles circa 2005. It’s a part of a project that Stones Throw Records is a part of.
via Stones Throw Records:
“Back in 2005, photographer Raph Rashid was hoping to complete a book of hip-hop home studios by getting pics of J Dilla at work in Los Angeles. Unknown to all but a small circle of people at the time, J Dilla had been in and out of the hospital all year dealing with increasingly serious health problems. It was summer, during a brief period when Dilla was home, working on The Shining, looking and feeling good, when Raph came to take this picture. It was published with others later that year in his book Behind the Beat: Hip-Hop Home Studios.
You may have seen some of the other photos on the web. We arranged with Raph to use one on our Ruff Draft poster and last year’s Stussy shirt. Another photo from this session which also appears in the book, is one of Dilla and his young daughter Ja’Mya Yancey.
This poster is a work of the J Dilla Estate (Pay Jay Productions, Inc.), available exclusively here in Stones Throw’s online shop. The poster will begin shipping Valentine’s Day February 14. ”

DJ Rasta Root Presents: The Rest Of Dilla Documentary Vol. I (Video)
My friend & all around dope ass DJ Rasta Root finally drops his ‘Rest Of Dilla Documentary Dillamentary’. Not only is DJ Rasta Root an international DJ & producer, but he’s also the new business manager for the Dilla Foundation. In the video he sheds some light on the project that initially started out as a mixtape honoring J Dilla but it eventually took a life of its own & grew into something bigger that involved Dilla’s mother Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey. Shout out to Ma Dukes! Dilla Forever! Enjoy!
R&B/Soul: Mint Condition – ‘Caught My Eye’

Mint Condition is one of those bands that are just classic in every sense of the word. The music is on point & the lyrics are realistic & mature. Unlike the majority of R&B on the radio this is honest music. These guys have been doing this for about 20 years now & still sounds as good as their namesake….’Mint Condition’. This is how real R&B/Soul should feel. Here’s there latest joint ‘Caught My Eye’ & after the jump I posted a few of their classics that I still bump to this day.
Stalley – SLAPP feat. Rashad (Video)
Ohio’s ‘Stalley’ drops the first video from his new album ‘Lincoln Way Nights (Intelligent Trunk Music)’ due on February 8th. If you’re a car enthusiast like Stalley you should check his interview after the jump where he speaks on Ohio’s car culture & the differences between his region & the rest of the country.
Lupe Fiasco – ‘Words I Never Said’ feat. Skylar Grey
This is a sure to be controversial song from Lupe Fiasco if the public doesn’t overlook it completely. I’m not shocked by it because I’ve heard these same opinions in barbershops, the streets, & in some suites. Pay attention to the lyrics for something that Lupe Fiasco has been meaning to get off his chest. Just a few ‘Words He Never Said’. Lyrics after the jump….

Check out the video above of Atlanta native & Philly resident ‘STS’ talking about his new group that consists of Black Thought, Dice Raw, & Truck North. The Money Making Jam Boys will be dropping a new mixtape on February 3rd called ‘The Prestige: Jam Boy Magic’.
‘Naughty By Nature’ Says There Are More Artists Today Than Fans (Video)
Legendary rap group ‘Naughty By Nature’ appeared on 50’s site for an interview celebrating over 20 years in the game & one of the key points Treach made in the interview is something that I’ve been saying for a while now. There are simply more artists than there are fans these days. Everyone & their mother raps or sings in 2011. I’ve been in radio since 1990 & never have I’ve seen the climate this bad where EVERYONE wants to be an artist. More often than not people don’t understand the amount of work & sacrifice it takes to be successful in it. Most people are not cut out for this business so if you’re not in it for longevity like Naughty By Nature continues to be for over 20 years then its going to be a disappointing ride for anyone jumping in for the wrong reasons.
J Dilla: Still Shining Promo Trailer
Definitely looking forward to see this documentary/movie when it drops on February 7th on TheJDillaProject.com. For now this is only the promo trailer for the upcoming video production of the “J Dilla: Still Shining” project. The film is expected to delve into never seen before footage of one of hip hop’s greatest producers to give fans a greater perspective on Detroit’s finest.
Vicious Cycle – “You People” (Video)
Lately I have been hearing a lot of really good hip hop from female artists. This is a duo from Texas coming with quality production and vicious lyrics. Actually I been hearing these ladies spit better and harder bars than a lot of the male emcee’s. Don’t sleep, these ain’t the typical sexed out, scantly dressed, sell my body, shake my ass for props hip hop from the ladies you maybe used to. Viscous Cycle, along with the likes of Dynasty, Boog Brown, Natee, Stahhr, Sa-Roc, Jean Grae, Eternia, Tiye Phoniex are tearin’ verses to shreads over gutter beats. Yo these ladies swords are sharp…so you better protect yo neck!!
