Driving While Black in New Jersey (Documentary)

A new report from Seton Hall Law School Center for Policy & Research has found that in the majority-white municipality of Bloomfield, New Jersey, nearly 80 percent of traffic tickets are issued to African American and Latino drivers.

The report also found that most tickets were issued to non-resident minority drivers passing through town, suggesting a “de facto border patrol” policing policy is in effect.

The Bloomfield Police Department — which has begun collecting data on the race of drivers in traffic stops as of January 2016 — rejects the report’s findings.

VICE News reports on Seton Hall’s methodology and on the experience of minority drivers in Bloomfield.

Professional drivers have started academies, and in doing so are trying to make drifting a professional sport.

Meet Britain’s Jason Coghlan: A Criminal Turned Criminal Attorney (Documentary)

Better Call Saul Goodman… Or, maybe since this is gangster stuff, we should go with Tom Hagen – consigliere and legal counsel for the Corleone Family (The Godfather)… Real-life crime and punishment and reform and organized crime. VICE gained intimate access to Jason’s life over two years, witnessing the rise of his legal firm, which explicitly caters to the gangsters of the Costa Del Sol in Spain. However, the echoes of his old life are never far away and a gang feud in Jason’s native Manchester threatens to unravel his new amicable existence.

Free State Of Jones (Trailer)

Should be really dope. I remember author Sally Jenkins’ appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart years ago… talking about “The State Of Jones” book (see that here). Great story. The trailer above teases a movie that seems like it will do the story justice.

Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (THE HUNGER GAMES, SEABISCUIT, PLEASANTVILLE), and starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey. FREE STATE OF JONES is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy.

Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones.

Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

In Theaters June 24, 2016.

The Land (Trailer)

Teenage buddies Cisco, Boobie, Junior, and Patty Cake skateboard the streets of Cleveland, Ohio, dreaming of getting discovered by a sponsor and skating their way out of poverty. That is until the boys discover a bag full of pills in the back of a stolen car. Cisco’s entrepreneurial instincts take over, and in a flash their lives get better. But no one counted on having to come face to face with the cold, calculating, and notorious drug queenpin, “Momma,” who runs the toughest gang in town.

Director Steven Caple Jr. makes an auspicious debut with this atmospheric film filled with pitch-perfect performances by an ensemble cast, including newcomer Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Erykah Badu, Machine Gun Kelly, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Linda Emond, who is bone chilling as Momma. More than a crime drama, “The Land” is a beautifully rendered story about friendship, values, and what it means for disaffected youth to come of age on the streets of Cleveland.

Southside With You (Trailer)

Before they were the Prez and First Lady… before they were perhaps one of the world’s most adorable couples… there had to be a first date. This is that story.

Inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date, “Southside With You,” recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

Snowden (Trailer)

September 16, 2016. Mark your calendars. Oliver is putting his Stones on the table to tell what looks to be the end-all real-life spy drama based on the life and dealings of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. Blowing the whistle on what is more than arguably the world’s most secretive organization… strap in!

Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. No matter which you believe, the epic story of why he did it, who he left behind, and how he pulled it off makes for one of the most compelling films of the year.

Hands Of Stone (Trailer)

Trailer looks good. Damn good! When Robert De Niro (as trainer Ray Arcel) says, “You’re Roberto Duran. Get in there and act like it…” Whew!!

“Hands Of Stone” follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year‐old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50.
