Just Dala: Meet the Bubble Heads of Cape Town (Doumentary)

Sneakerheads in the hood are sneakerheads in the hood, worldwide. And they (including you, if the shoe fits) will see at least some of themselves in this docu-film.

In our short documentary, “Just Dala,” we explore the small but growing sneaker culture that exists in the city’s Cape Flats. Known colloquially as “bubbleheads,” South Africa’s sneakerheads are in a league of their own. Here we talk to some of the scene’s most influential insiders to learn about life in one of the country’s poorest communities and how locals live their life with dignity and with the freshest kicks.

Based On A Pro Wrestler’s Real Life Story, “Fighting With My Family” Debuts Next Month (Trailer)

I will admit to being really biased here (huge ‘rasslin fan), but this looks like a really great movie! Based on the life of WWE Superstar Paige. That, this trailer and the casting pulled me right in!

Based on a true story, FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY follows reformed gangster Ricky, wife Julia, daughter Paige and son Zak as they make a living, wrestling together in tiny venues. When Paige and Zak get the opportunity to try out for WWE, the family grabs a once-in-a-lifetime chance to turn their wildest dreams into a dazzling future. However, brother and sister quickly discover that to become superstars, both their talent and their relationship will be put to the test.

FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY is a heartwarming and smart comedy that proves everything is worth fighting for when it comes to family.

Horror: Whats Wrong With Miles? ‘The Prodigy’ Debuts February 8th (Trailer)

FINALLY!!!

Hollywood looks like they are getting the point of what a horror movie is supposed to be… the presentation of a relentless evil force that scares you to death AND fills you with despair because it/he/she is GOING to KILL you (or take your soul or whatever) and yours… and there is NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!

Horror is not just ‘thriller’ or ‘scare ride’ or ‘heart racing terror’… Naaaah, son! HORROR includes the realization that the very, very horrible thing is coming… for YOU. Think ‘Dracula’ at your front door, the devil in ‘The Exorcist’ or the Damien ‘Omen’ franchise…

OHHHH… and speaking of kids, bad kids, and the very bad things they can do… “The Prodigy” trailer is looking like some true HORROR! Yeezus West this kid looks f**ked up in the best scary movie way!

What’s wrong with Miles? From the producer of Exorcism of Emily Rose comes a new vision of unimaginable horror. Watch the full trailer for The Prodigy, starring Taylor Schilling and Jackson Robert Scott, in theaters February 8.
#MilesIsDangerous #WhatsWrongWithMiles

(All that said, I really don’t like watching horror movies. I just really appreciate it; like other movie genres, when the films stay true to their school’s rules.)

Keanu Reeves Is Back For ‘Chapter 3’ Of The John Wick Franchise (Trailer)

John Wick was retired when we started this thing right? But folks had to f**k with him (sigh)… You’d think they’d have learned to leave him alone by now.

Then again, Keanu’s character does end up killing most everybody he ‘teaches’ that lesson in his movies. Good for moviegoers, because we keep getting movies full of good, grimy, popcorn-munching azz kickery. Plus, this go ’round… Halle Berry

Coming off a good SXSW run. Cool. Characterizing the hero’s powers as she experiences them during use. Interesting perspective and very cool, too. Powerful abilities on top of that. Abilities which, of course, put her on the run. Toss in tension with the family who she hopes will help her… and action, drama, sci-fi… BOOM!

The Rise of Asian Rap Culture (Documentary)

Wow. Asians dropping that n-word… Uncomfortable. But VICE goes in, and embeds and lets the subjects do them, so we can learn. So, let’s push through to the end and get the insights. Then we can make a better-informed decision as to whether we rock with what Asian rappers are saying, or not; all, or in part.

A growing number of Asian artists have burst onto the Hip-Hop scene over the past few years, thanks, in large part, to 88rising—a multimedia company that specializes in signing and amplifying Asian talent.

Founder Sean Miyashiro has helped artists like Joji, Higher Brothers, and Rich Brian (formerly known as Rich Chigga) build massive followings and net millions of views on YouTube, where the rappers upload a steady stream of music videos. But even as their popularity skyrockets, some in the Hip-Hop community take issue with their lyrics—raising questions about the line between self-expression and cultural appropriation.

For this episode of ‘MINORITY REPORTS,’ VICE’s Lee Adams met up with Miyashiro and a handful of high-profile Asian rappers—including $tupid Young, an Asian Crip unaffiliated with 88rising—to hear why they got into Hip-Hop, and what challenges they’ve faced while creating space for themselves as Hip-Hop’s newest minorities.

He also sat down with Ebro Darden—a Hot 97 morning host and Apple Music’s global editorial head of Hip-Hop and R&B—to hear his take on the cultural movement, exploring what separates contributing to Hip-Hop culture from misappropriating it.

Pee Wee Kirkland Left The Court To Become A Kingpin In The Drug Game (Video)

Surely you know something about the dual life lived by hood icon Pee Wee Kirkland. At least you’ve heard that rap line “Legend in two games [like] Pee Wee Kirkland.” Basketball was one game. VICE will give us the real deep scoop on Pee Wee’s second.

Richard “Pee Wee” Kirkland began playing basketball in the streets of Harlem when he was 9-years-old. By age 13, he split his time between playing ball and committing robberies to help finance a growing drug empire.

In college, Kirkland was the 1968 MVP for Norfolk State, turning down an offer from UCLA to play alongside Kareem Abdul Jabaar. Kirkland was then drafted by the Chicago Bulls but turned down their offer when he realized he could make more money in the drug game than the basketball game. With law enforcement on his tail, Kirkland found himself behind bars twice between 1971 and 1988. From there, he made a change, becoming a motivational speaker and inspiring young, inner-city athletes to take a different path out than he did.

Presented by Ryot.
