Just Dala: Meet the Bubble Heads of Cape Town (Doumentary)

Sneakerheads in the hood are sneakerheads in the hood, worldwide. And they (including you, if the shoe fits) will see at least some of themselves in this docu-film.

In our short documentary, “Just Dala,” we explore the small but growing sneaker culture that exists in the city’s Cape Flats. Known colloquially as “bubbleheads,” South Africa’s sneakerheads are in a league of their own. Here we talk to some of the scene’s most influential insiders to learn about life in one of the country’s poorest communities and how locals live their life with dignity and with the freshest kicks.

Trevor Noah Explains: 9-1-1 Is Very Different In South Africa (Video)

Trevor has his audience tripping and chuckling about just how different South African 9-1-1 operators operate in an “emergency.” Everything ain’t an emergency, lady. Go talk to those Black people barbecuing, ask what they are doing, THEN we will talk about sending someone.

(Funny, but it makes sense!)

Executive Producer Thandie Newton Presents “Liyana” (Trailer)

You know the movie is going to be powerful when the trailer touches your heart and wells your eyes with tears. With animation in it no less. Incredibly compelling film!

Under the guidance of acclaimed South African storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe, five orphaned children from Swaziland collaborate to craft a collective fairytale drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams. Their fictional character, Liyana, is brought to life in innovative animated artwork as she embarks on a perilous quest to rescue her young twin brothers. The children’s real and imagined worlds begin to converge, and they must choose what kind of story they will tell – in fiction and in their own lives.

This genre-defying film weaves an original animated hero’s journey with poetic documentary scenes to create an inspiring tale of perseverance. LIYANA is a tribute to creativity, the strength of the human spirit, and the healing power storytelling.

Critically acclaimed, and executive produced by award-winning actress, Thandie Newton, LIYANA has won more than 25 jury and audience awards and screened at more than 80 film festivals around the world including the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival and MoMA’s Doc Fortnight.

South African Western ‘Five Fingers For Marseilles’ Is In American Theaters Now (Trailer)

DOPE!

Marseilles was never free, but it will be. Change is coming. #AfricaRising

“Five Fingers For Marseilles” is being billed as a ‘rousing, heroic, original South African Western’ (the existence of such a genre is EPIC enough already). The trailer more than teases a bold & fully engaging story arc, azz-kickery and grit, with just enough modernness (i.e. bicycles instead of horses, guns but not automatics for the shootouts). Watch the trailer and judge for self if you agree it’s worth the upgrade to large popcorn with extra butter!

Skin Bleaching In South Africa (Video)

In the U.S. we beat our chests and proclaim, “Black Lives Matter,” “Black And Proud,” even “Wakanda Forever,” and some of our brothers & sisters in South Africa feel compelled to risk breaking the law and getting cancer by chemically lightening their skin??? Sad and shocking…

South Africa’s skin bleaching scandal: Unreported World went to South Africa where the use of controversial skin bleaching creams is on the rise in a new generation. Despite strict laws banning dangerous chemicals they’re widely available and are making people ill. Reporter Tania Rashid met a celebrity who endorses skin bleaching despite the risks and some of those that are trying to end the trade.

Nelson Mandela’s Old Johannesburg Hideout Gives South African Artists & Entrepreneurs A New Home (Video)

Nice! Shout to The Daily Beast for bringing this Johannesburg gem to light. A center for entrepreneurship and culture that was once at the heart of the anti-apartheid movement. In South Africa, if you want to realize a dream, this is the place – apparently to work it or witness the work come to fruition. Great look at the people and art of Johannesburg in this clip.

The hostel reputed to be Nelson Mandela’s apartheid-era hideout is now the center of a network of cultural entrepreneurs who have helped revive the South African city.

Animal Activist Kevin Richardson Gets Up Close & Personal With Several Wild Lions in South Africa (Video)

GoPro is some great tech that has captured some incredible feats. And we have put a few GoPro posts on here. But this. UNBELIEVABLE! Not even sure we should post this.

“They’re just so beautiful.”
Kevin Richardson

Of course, the GoPro Productions team stayed in the vehicle. But Kevin (aka ‘The Lion Whisperer’) just had to go out and meet his friends. If you happen to live near the South African (or any) savannah… DO NOT TRY THIS!!

(But if you haven’t already…play this!)

Thank You Nelson Mandela (Video)

Former prisoner. Former President. Forever to be respected, admired, loved…  now mourned by nations the world over. Pass now from us into eternity, Nelson Mandela. Quite literally, a man who was no myth; but who will remain a legend who lived a life of service to humanity died at his home yesterday. He was 95.

We don’t have the perfect words, Mr. President. But we sincerely offer the two that should certainly be heard forever in association with your name: Thank You! For your struggles, protests, imprisonment, iconification… for your work and triumphs freeing yourself and your people (of every color) from the bonds of man, from the oppression racist institutions, and the entanglements of in-fighting that kept us at war with ourselves… We say THANK YOU, President Mandela.

To be certain, the struggles continue. But it is now our turn to take up the causes we see fit and see them through to the end; to our own ends if necessary. And we cannot say we have not had folks to have shown us the way in our lifetime. Chief among them, Nelson Mandela showed us the way of the warrior suited for his lifelong battle against injustice and for peace on a national/global scale: Not perfect, but not waiting for someone or some perfect time to come along. Not looking for a fight, but willing to risk it all and fight with all he has for as long as he has. And as a result, though not seeking glory as an end, glory followed him to the end and will forevermore.

Rest in peace, Brother Mandela. We got it from here.

Video comments from U.S. President Barack Obama above. After the jump, a favorite clip of mine.

Technology: Drones Deployed Over South Africa Drop Beers Not Bombs (Video)

Not all the news on drone tech nowadays is scary. Remember that UK pizza delivery drone post on here? Well, how about beer… delivered! Hey, it’s what South African concert goers had available. A beer order is placed, a drone is loaded and deployed with beer, the drone flies over the location of the order and delivers the payload via parachute drop… and a crowd cheers. Nice!

‘At the moment it is hand guided, but it will eventually fly on a GPS grid.’

– OppiKoppi TV

According to NY Daily News, the drone already flies delivery by GPS grid. OppiKoppi came up with the concept. Darkwing Aerials took it from concept to prototype. Want to see it work? Here we go (above).

‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’ Starring Idris Elba (Long Trailer)

We posted the UK trailer for the coming ‘Mandela’ movie earlier on here. Needless to say it was an incredibly short teaser of what’s to come. The film currently slated to be released November 29th seeks to chronicle Mandela’s life from his childhood in a rural village to his eventually ascent as the first democratically elected President of South Africa. Early rumors about the screenplay have the focus of the film to be on on Mandela’s younger days in South Africa. Nelson Mandela recently turned 95 after suffering a few life threatening health related issues so hopefully he will be with us when the world celebrates as the film hits theaters. Of course we posted the short version earlier, but now take a peek at the official ‘Long Version’ of the movie trailer.

WATCH: RICK ROSS ROCKS SOUTH AFRICA (PART ONE)

Rick Ross Rocks South Africa (Video)

Last year I went to South Africa for the very first time & it was one of the best experiences of my life. What I learned while I was in Johannesburg was that Rick Ross was easily one of the top 3 favorite rappers among the masses of hip hop fans in that country besides Kanye West & Lil Wayne. Looking at this video proves that Rick Ross’s popularity hasn’t waned in the motherland at all…

Public Enemy Performs Free Show in Soweto, South Africa (Video)

When I went to South Africa for the first time last year it was one of the most enjoyable & memorable experiences of my life. I took advantage to soak it all in from the cosmopolitan areas to the hoods of Soweto which is short for “Southwestern Townships”.Public Enemy took a journey near the cradle of civilization to show love to the people of Soweto about 30 miles or so outside of the capital of Johannesburg. Many of the people I met in South Africa told me that when American artists come to visit they never go & hang out with the people or visit Soweto. I’m not surprised to see Chuck D in this video let the people of Soweto know to hold those artists accountable when they come their country. Chuck D wasn’t lying when he mentioned on his twitter page that he thinks he left his heart in South Africa.
