The Land of No Men: Inside Kenya’s Women-Only Village (Video)

Where the foothills of Mount Kenya merge into the desert, the people of Samburu have maintained a strict patriarchy for over 500 years in northern Kenya. That is, until 25 years ago, when Rebecca Lolosoli founded Umoja village as a safe haven for the region’s women. Umoja, which means “unity” in Swahili, is quite literally a no man’s land, and the matriarchal refuge is now home to the Samburu women who no longer want to suffer abuses, like genital mutilation and forced marriages, at the hands of men.
VICE Broadly’s Michelle De Swarte visited Umoja (and the villages it inspired to also start their own women-only societies) to meet with the women who were fed up with living in a violent patriarchy.

DJ Ferno and Dayne Jordan can’t believe their eyes as they peruse the shops in amazement. After the show, Dayne gets a chance to connect with fans old and new. Next up is Sydney, Australia where things get heated for Jeff at the hotel and the show. Later, Steve takes time to reflect on his experiences while roaming the streets of Melbourne.
Luxurious life of globetrotters. Oh look, hot Mickey D’s. Awesome. And hotter hotel rooms. Super awesome. These ‘awesomes’ are sarcastic… just to clarify). Still good times. Watch.

Well, yeah. Yeah it is. But growth could mean one record a week to two; so how big a growth trend are we talking (you ask)? Oh, just enough to keep the few remaining plants worldwide backed up to up to six months or so delivery turnaround on a vinyl order.

Â One of the acts is an artist who we post up on Jayforce.com on the regular that is Chris Rivers. Â He rocked the crowd last night with great energy lyrics and some dope freestyles.
