Food: South L.A.’s African-American Taco Movement (Video)

Okay, you know Memphis for the barbecue and Philly for the cheesesteak… Basically, there are a lot of cities with food that reps. Check out a new food movement: South Los Angeles’ African American Tacos. Just a taste of Food Grails, a new First We Feast travel series.

Welcome to Food Grails, a new First We Feast travel series hosted by Miss Info. As a music journalist, she’s travelled the world and seen the power of artists who rep for their hometown sound. Now, she wants to discover how foods define a city’s flavor—from Atlanta’s lemon-pepper wings, to NYC’s beef patties. These are America’s food grails.
First We Feast

Learned some math: Profit from slanging tacos > profit from selling weed (wow, plus weed heads probably come through with ‘the munchies’ yo). Serious business here. Watch.

Pusha T Pushes Marijuana Legalization In His Ad: Artists For ‘Yes On 64’ (Video)

A different angle and valid discussion point of view from Pusha T on weed. Sure, we have seen Redman, Sean Price (RIP), and other emcees advocate for marijuana products in commercials and in their lyrics. But this ad is more academic and socio-political in its approach. Legalizing marijuana possession/use, decriminalization, any step in the direction of Proposition 64 on the California ballot, are positive gains in walking back oppressive mass incarceration legislation that has many friends & family locked up unnecessarily and for way too long.

Major key: Pusha T is not even a California resident. But he knows as California goes, so goes much of the rest of the U.S.

Kendrick Lamar Recognized as A ‘Generational Icon’ on the California State Senate Floor (Video)

Well Kendrick Lamar continues to win in 2015.  His critically acclaimed album “To Pimp A Butterfly” is selling like Rap albums did back in the 90’s and has helped to reinvigorate the conversation about doing a complete work rather than just catchy singles.  Now add to the list he has been recognized as a “Generational Icon” by the California Senate and was awarded on the Senate floor.  This was organized by fellow Compton native Sen. Isadore Hall III who introduced Kendrick to the Senate Floor and presented the award.  Kendrick along with his fiancee Whitney Alford were there to accept the award and thank the Senate for the distinguished honor.

Vinyl Destination | Ep. 11 ‘Give The Drummer Some’ On Season 2 With The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff (Video)

In this episode of Vinyl Destination, DJ Jazzy Jeff and his crew ‘have a Cali week’ in Los Angeles. Jeff links up with drummer Travis Barker to talk about the possibility of doing a show. They chat about gear and do a DJ/Drummer jam session. Got into a lot for what was to be a laid back time. Eventually got over to the grocery store to shop to make a ‘Magnificent Meal’ – and leave a full fridge (like Jeff says a good house guest should) – while staying at the home of comedian buddy Russell Peters (see him in this prior episode here)) while in town. A show in San Diego, then flying out to UK for a day, then back stateside for another show in Vegas the day after… whew! A chill week, then back on the grind like a mutha—-!

Nice soundtracking in the back[ground] in this episode (contributions from Dayne Jordan).

California Cleared To Start Force-Feeding Inmates On Hunger Strike (Video)

You’d think once folks saw the atrocity that is force-feeding of inmates on hunger strike they’d stop the practice, right? But you probably guessed that officials would do just the opposite. But that was just at Gitmo – a military prison in Cuba. The United States would NEVER allow such to happen on its soil… right? Right…? WRONG! A California judge just cleared the way for force feeding of the state inmates on hunger strike given ‘certain conditions.’

‘US District Judge Thelton Henderson is allowing prison doctors in California to force-feed inmates who are participating in a hunger strike. According to the ruling, if a prisoner is near death then a doctor is allowed to step in and intervene in the matter. As of now, 136 inmates are protesting living conditions and policies in place at facilities in the Golden State.’

Sorry, Yasiin. It doesn’t seem that publicity surrounding your courageous effort was enough to change the hardliners’ hearts and minds. We posted the gruesome Yasiin Bey force-feeding demo on here a while back.

Pac Div – “Truth” (Prod. By Swiff D)

“We the livest three n*ggas in the f**kin’ state!” Well… that lyric just about says it all regarding how Cali crew Pac Div feels, huh? Okay, okay. Pac Div is dope. Gotta admit that. And this banging track, “Truth,” (produced by Swiff D) is more proof. And the audio clip from the movie “3 Strikes” at the end… Faizon Love’s character is crazy! Don’t leave this Pac Div joint ‘on stuck’ though. Enjoy this one right now right here.

Wiz Khalifa – California (Video)

New video from Wiz Khalifa showing love to “California” although the video looks like it was shot in Hawaii. The song “California” will appear on the upcoming “Taylor Allderdice” mixtape. I’m not mad at this breezy joint because it sounds like I’m driving up Cali’s 405 freeway or the PCH at night…
