White Lines & The Fever (Trailer)

I don’t know if this documentary is out yet, but I’d sure would like to see it. I’ve always heard many old school artists & DJs talk about the legendary Disco Fever. Especially when the Fat Boys talked about getting the opportunity to perform there in the movie Krush Groove. Documentaries like these are always interesting to me because usually its before my time & helps to give us perspective when done accurately. What makes this trailer even more interesting is that it documents the life of DJ Junebug who doubled as a drug dealer who’s life ended tragically.

“This is the story of Junebug’s double life as a DJ and drug dealer. Recalling the Bronx in the early 1980s, this documentary explores the old-school days of hip-hop and the dangerous underworld at the legendary Disco Fever. Never-before-seen footage and interviews with Kurtis Blow, DJ Hollywood, and Sal Abbatiello tell the tragic story of one of the greatest DJs ever.”

Happy Anniversary: Outkast – ‘SouthernPlayalisticadillacmuzik’

Today marks the 17th anniversary of Outkast’s 1994 debut album ‘Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik’. I remember back when this album dropped I was still doing a hip hop radio show near Philly. I was feeling several key songs on the album back then like ‘Crumbling Erb’, ‘Get Up Git Out’, ‘Ain’t No Thang’, ‘Hootie Hoo‘, & of course ‘Players Ball’. thought it was a cool debut album from a group from a city not yet known for its abundance of quality hip hop acts. It was one of those albums that made me take notice, but I had not converted into a full fledged fan at the time. Outkast’s ‘Atliens’ album was the album that made me a full fledged fan, but there is no doubt that their debut album set the bar high for southern hip hop at the time. Many great hip hop albums dropped in 1994 & Outkast was hanging with the ‘big boi’s’ (pun intended) in the music industry in the competition for ears & car stereo systems. A bar that only Outkast themselves could only surpass with their subsequent releases of ‘Atliens’ & ‘Aquemeni’ in ’96 & ’98 respectively

American DJ Story | The DJ Won’t Die (Trailer)

Recently I’ve been hearing plenty of DJs complaining about too many newcomers, rappers, & various celebrities getting into the DJ game. This also causes increased competition for the limited amount of money that promoters are willing to spend to hire competent DJs. I was reminded of DJ Nab’s trailer to his new film ‘American DJ Story’ which is based on his rise as a prominent DJ in the hip hop game. DJ Nabs held a few screenings of the film around Atlanta sometime last year I believe, but I’ve yet to see the full documentary. His trailer reminded me of these ongoing debates about the state of DJing in Hip Hop that I consistently hear DJs lament about today. Technology has changed so much from the days that DJ Nabs first came into the game when it was significantly harder to become a respected DJ in hip hop. Today I’m amazed at all the things skilled DJs like DJ Nabs had to do manually are now conveniently automated within software programs for beatmatching, auto BPM’ing, & even the ability to have a full library at you disposal instead of carrying crates of records. I think talented & skilled DJs like DJ Nabs have come at a crossroads where they are going to need to reinvent themselves before its too late. I genuinely believe that today moving forward into the future more respected DJs will need to be more than just a DJ because technology is phasing many elements of being a true DJ talent out of the picture that pioneering DJs revolutionized in the first place. Look for more trailers of DJ Nabs’s film ‘American DJ Story’ under the hood or the the link below….

‘Black In Latin America’ Premiers Tonight On PBS (Video)

I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Henry Louis Gates while he was speaking at my university years ago. Good to see he continues the great yet difficult discussions regarding race by putting them in the forefront. I’m very excited about this PBS piece that airs later today at 8pm called ‘Black In Latin America’. Having visited many spanish speaking countries I can recall one person, who was much darker than I am, telling me that they were Latin but denied that they were also Black. I looked at the woman like she was crazy. Immediately I thought to myself that if I had the time & resources I would love to do a piece on this very particular duality of race.

Black in Latin America is the third of a trilogy that began in 1999 with the broadcast of Professor Gates’s first series for public television, Wonders of the African World, an exploration of the relationship between Africa and the New World, a story he continued in 2004 with America Beyond the Color Line, a report on the lives of modern-day African Americans. Black In Latin America, premiering nationally Tuesdays April 19, 26 and May 3, 10, 2011 at 8 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings), examines how Africa and Europe came together to create the rich cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean”

Prince Interview & Performance On The ‘Lopez Tonight’ Show (Video)

The legendary Prince Nelson Rogers appeared on ‘Lopez Tonight’ & straight killed it! I watched it twice last night after it aired the first time. Prince & his band The New Power Generation will embark on a 21 day tour in L.A. beginning today & last night on the Lopez Tonight Show they really did set it off with a bang! George Lopez had me rollin’ though when he called Prince his ‘Puerto Rican’ brother from another mother. George Lopez be always trying to make someone an honorary Latino! Hahaa! It’s all good though…… Tu Sabe?! More video & performances under the hood….

Classic Clips: Wu-Tang Clan Interview From 1991 (Video)

Rap artist J-Zone, who just so happens to also write for Egotripland.com, unearthed some rare footage of the Wu-Tang Clan in their early stages for an interview on a cable access television program. This reminds me that I really need to digitize all the classic interviews I’ve had with artists from my time doing my ‘Strictly Hip Hop’ video show on cable access from around the same period of ’90-’95.

Too Short Talks About Music, Pimps, Hoes, & Freaknik Ninety Fo’ (Video)

I found this to be very interesting & funny interview with Too Short that was shot recently. The interviewer didn’t really have to ask Too Short any great or eye opening questions because ‘Short’ did most of the talking in the interview anyway. Short pretty much kept it moving with some interesting information about his career, Freaknik in Atlanta, & how artists back in the day used to work together as compared to the artists of today. The female host is some definite eye candy though….wow!

Flashback: Lil Wayne Kissing Birdman On Rap City May 2002 (Video)

I remember seeing this when it first aired with Lil Wayne & Baby kissing on national television. I was caught off guard & when I told people who missed this episode of BET’s Rap City they didn’t believe me. With everything going on with DJ Mister Cee as of late I’m wondering if more gay rappers or entertainers will eventually be forced out come out of the closet. SHEEHZ!
