R.I.P. Muhammad Ali

13344632_10154167763277822_6446833236814751172_n

As much as we want it not to be true, reporting from CBS Sports, BBC and myriad news media confirms that the man known worldwide as The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, has passed. He was 74 years old.

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Ali stepped into the world’s spotlight by winning a gold medal as a light-heavyweight at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He would go on to defeat Sonny Liston in 1964 to claim his first world title and became the first boxer to capture a world heavyweight championship on three separate occasions. Retiring in 1981, Ali won 56 of his 61 fights as an active professional. However, his accolades do not stop there. Sports Illustrated recognized Ali as “Sportsman of the Century,” and the BBC named him “Sports Personality of the Century.”

Though later more understated as an elder statesman of sport, remembering Ali’s boldness and bigger-than-life presence over the years is what is likely driving the water from your tear ducts now. Even now you hear his braggadocio echo…

I float like a butterfly; sting like a bee.
I am The Greatest!
I shook up the WORLD!
I’m a bad man!

But he was also a champion for Civil Rights and Human Rights the world over. An outspoken member of the Nation Of Islam, a conscious objector to the war in Vietnam (convicted for his stance), a goodwill ambassador (notably meeting Fidel Castro when U.S. – Cuba relations were still very cold) and so much more. Too much more to do justice to his legacy in this Memoriam, but please, if you will, say one more time as he would, “The Champ is here!”

Then, in spirit, join with mourners around the world dealing with the reality that The Champ is with us no more. Hit the jump for some remembrances, quotes and video footage.

Rest Well, Champ.

Common Kills With This ‘Sway In The Morning’ Freestyle (Video)

REAL emcees keep a sharp sword; lyrical weapon ready and ready to pull it. Like Common. Have you seen the freestyle dude did on Sway In The Morning? Maaaaan! Maim-murder-death-kill with lyrics over a classic smooth boom-bap instrumental track. The flow feels so good, Com can barely contain his energy!

Common’s influence has paved the way for so many artists including Kendrick, J. Cole and Lil Bibby, so when he freestyles you can hear pieces of him they’ve incorporated into their own music.

Joining us this morning he spit a crazy freestyle around the topic of the American Black Film Festival. Common flows smooth as ever as he drops names of influential black role models as well as mentioning things black people have had to fight against.

The Robert Glasper Trio x Dres (Of Black Sheep) – “Just Cause”

Here it is. Very short, but so sweet. Dres goes in as The Robert Glasper Trio grooves… you know, “Just Cause.”

Just Cause I’m a huge fan of Robert Glasper’s work.. Just Cause his live version of “The Worst” is just an insanely dope piece of work.. Just Cause I play it all the damn time.. Just Cause I thought it would be really cool to put a beat under it and rhyme on it… Just Cause I thought everyone would appreciate the sentiment… I present… Just Cause.

Marauders (Trailer)

What is the difference between a question and an allegation?
An allegation is the one you don’t answer.

Boom! Classic dialog like that, a well-balanced starring cast, and Christopher Meloni (best known as Detective Stabler from the Law & Order: SVU television series) getting to the bottom of the caper… This “Marauders” trailer is teasing what looks to be an intriguing piece of cinema worth catching with some pricey popcorn.

An untraceable group of elite bank robbers is chased by a suicidal FBI Agent who uncovers a deeper purpose behind the robbery-homicides.

Deepwater Horizon (Trailer)

A star-studded cast, telling a compelling story that viewers do not have to ‘get’ to get into. Wahlberg and all-star crew did the do with this one. Summer blockbuster written all over this trailer. Hope it does the numbers needed with all the superhero movies out and coming out. A great action drama looms on the Horizon (yeah).

On April 20th, 2010, one of the world’s largest man-made disasters occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. Directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor), this story honors the brave men and women whose heroism would save many on board, and change everyone’s lives forever.

Oh sh!t… this actually happened????

Going Offline: Reconnect And Enjoy Each Other Some Time (Video)

Disconnect from the ‘webs and reconnect (and enjoy) your partner. This video went with the sex angle (heh-heh…sex…angles…okay, I am a perv, so what of it). But it makes a great point that has been made before. Sometimes, maybe we are too connected. So what if the restaurant you and sweetie want to go to for date night doesn’t have Wi-Fi. So what if that ‘day-cation’ spot y’all want to hit for some quality time has poor reception. SO WHAT! The ‘Net is great for keeping us connected when we would otherwise be apart; but when we are with our loved ones, let’s be present.

You feel me?

(That last sentence would SO work for a Durex ad. Hire me.)
