After finishing Fixing the System, our HBO special report about America’s broken criminal justice complex, VICE traveled back to El Reno Federal Correctional Institution in Oklahoma, to screen the documentary for inmates and staff. Fans of Hip-Hop’s Golden Era will remember and likely raise a fist to this. Paris is one of the revolutionary rappers of that time that spoke the truth of police brutality and fired listeners’ political passions. Past the rally, just short of riotous revolt; that’s where P-Dog lay on the spectrum. The NWA “F## The Police” and Public Enemy “Fight The Power” energy? Yeah… add a Molotov Cocktail and machine guns… that’s Paris on the hunt for abusive police and oppressive policymakers then AND now.
Of course, someone will gripe that Paris has not changed his tune for 25 years. Well, the conditions that fuel his style of rhyme have not changed. Those things he rhymes about exist in today’s Era, still; they were not left in the 1990s. Tell them that. Better, just have them watch the “Night Of The Long Knives” video above. New Stay Melo ep on VICE Sports for y’all. Last one was about Cuba. This time it’s Puerto Rico.
Carmelo Anthony recognizes, like most looking outside in, that Puerto Rico is currently in economic decline. But to Melo it’s a place of family, opportunity and a growing sports culture. He goes to chill (Melo out, if you will) but also to do some goodwill and good work. Spent a few days training with a group of fellow Knicks, seeing the stadium that will house his Puerto Rico FC NASL team, riding out to La Perla (one of Puerto Rico’s most notorious hoods), hanging out with reggaeton legend Tempo (home after a 12 year prison bid) at one of the b-ball courts Melo has refurbished for the community and more stuff.
Sure, ballers are in the League…balling. But with all that wealth, if you aren’t doing something…you got nothing! Just saying. Now, watch and listen as Melo does something; and shares and wrestles with his vision for what he’d like to accomplish in PR.

The Oscar-winning actress also reflects on what it was like to move to Mexico at age 16 without her parents, how she learned to cry on demand, what life was like as a Hollywood production assistant, and what it took to bring her upcoming Star Wars character to life.

ESPN’s 30-For-30: Trojan War (Video)

Ah, college football fans. Let’s talk about the Pete Carroll – USC Era. He took over the program at the University Of Southern California after the 2000 season, and eventually restored the luster and swagger of the once-great Trojans with his football knowledge, upbeat personality and recruiting skills (and a couple of star graduates who’d come back to visit, if recollection serves).
Soon enough, Southern Cal was back! Topping the college football world in home field attendance; turning out win after win, multiple Heisman Trophy winners (e.g. Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush), marquee TV respect (ABC & Keith Jackson don’t just call any game)…
BUT…
There was sinning at the revival of USC. And the worst sin of all D-1 sins, THEY GOT CAUGHT! Lost scholarships, overturned victories, a returned Heisman award… oh my. All of the fall would come to light after the 2006 National Championship game. USC lost the Rose Bowl that year to The University of Texas. Then the proverbial bottom fell the f##k out!
The hurt ran deep and are really only numbing today. At least now we can really talk about it. Well, Coach Carroll, Heisman-winning quarterback Leinart and others can that is. Watch “Trojan War,” an ESPN 30-For-30 special, above.

The challenges or having expectations on his shoulder; they’d come anyway. He pushes hard to earn. But being seen as just ‘some dude flowing over Dilla beats,’ or as some Slum Village hanger-on… nah, miss him with that.
