Yasiin Gaye (Yasiin Bey x Marvin Gaye) – “Ms. Fat Booty”

Already know… you heard talk of someone messing with Mos Def’s classic “Ms. Fat Booty” and went “Don’t touch our sh–!” Oh, Yasiin Bey and Marvin Gaye (conceptually collectivized as Yasiin Gaye) are taking a shot at the title? Interesting… Amerigo Gazaway is on to something: putting these ‘Soul Mates’ together, Marvin’s track fitted with Bey (then as Mos) lyrics. Nice.

Force Feeding Guantánamo Bay Prisoners: Yasiin Bey Filmed Undergoing the Gruesome Procedure (WARNING: VERY GRAPHIC) [Video]

Perhaps you’ve heard political banter making the case for closing ‘Gitmo’ (e.g. the American military detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba). Perhaps you dismissed it as something about which you, or no one your know, have no particular passion.

That changes today.

Recently released video of Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) on location in London, voluntarily participating in a demonstration of force-feeding procedure for Gitmo prisoners on hunger strike. WARNING: This visual presentation from director Asif Kapadia is DISTURBING. Please watch, if you feel you can. But know either way that this is happening… and that you should care.

Yasiin Bey x Preservation – “REcstatic” (Remix Album)

yasiin-bey-recstatic-download-lead

‘Three key steps to leading a rewarding and enriched life: (1) Wake up. (2) Be awesome. (3) LISTEN TO PRESERVATION.’

– Yasiin Bey

Suffice it to say, Yasiin is a fan of his tour DJ Preservation. Evidence of Bey’s trust in his DJ: their remix to the album “Ecstatic” – entitled “REcstatic” – has Preservation all over it (with the only exception being Yasiin’s rapping over a Minnesota production for “Black Fantastic,” which replaced “Casa Bey” on the original project). You can download the entire “REcstatic” project for FREE from the Mon Dieu Music site. Just join the e-list, and the zip is all yours!

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) Brings Out Kanye West At His Show In Paris (Video)

I’m doing better but I’m still trying to get used to Mos Def’s official name change to Yasiin Bey. Often when I bump into people on the street anywhere in the world & we bring him up I find people still haven’t made the connection yet as well. Once they do make that connection then they already know that Yasiin Bey will represent on stage no matter where he is on the planet. Check out this recent footage spotted at HHNM of the mighty Yasiin Bey rocking in Paris with Robert Glasper & as a special treat he brings out Kanye West. Seems like it was a dope night in Paahh’reee……

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) – “The Light Is Not Afraid Of The Dark” (Produced By Kanye West) [Unreleased]

Yasiin x YeA short while back video hit the web of the artist Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, performing an unreleased song called The Light Is Not Afraid Of The Dark’.  You can check out the video from the live performance in Chicago after the jump, but thanks to the good people over at OKP the unreleased track has been unearthed. The Kanye West produced track was recorded during the time Mos Def was working on his ‘True Magic’ album although the song didn’t make the final cut.  Seems there’s always a few quality gems like these that eventually get to see the light of day as compared to the thousands of recordings the public may never ever get to hear.  As a Yasiin Bey/Mos Def & Kanye West fan I’m glad we were able to have the opportunity to peep this quality joint right here….

Yasiin Bey – “Re:Definition” (Mixtape) By DJ Dub

artworks-000042411796-1u8obz-originalAnyone who knows me is well aware that one of my favorite hip hop artists is the emcee formerly known as Mos Def.  Looks like I’m not the only one as DJ Dub links with FreeOnsmash to deliver this brand new Yasiin Bey“ReDefinition” mixtape.  Listen, download & check out the tracklisting plus additional information below….

“Some artists in the hip-hop genre are so confident in their natural talent, that they can do whatever they please on the mic. The Mighty Mos Def, I’m sorry, Yasiin Bey is one of those people. Being able to flex his acting chops, serve as a conduit for the spirit of Ali by way of Louis Vuitton and not miss a beat on the microphone, is an amazing feat by any standard. DJ Dub brings portions of his vast catalog to life mixing classics, b-sides and his infamous Dub mixes to create a listening experience that should not be missed.  Consider Re:DEFinition as your official introduction to the artist known as Yasiin Bey.”

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def)- “I Don’t Like”

Yasiin Bey, the artist formerly known as Mos Def, adds some substance to the content deficient & lyrically weak “I Don’t like” record. Same big beat bang bang for this hypetrak, but the truth & passion in Yasiin’s words will give you something to think about. Bang Bang!

Yasiin Bey x Niels Shoe Meulman – “Float” (Tribute to Muhammad Ali) [Video]

Muhammad Ali will “drown a drink of water” and “kill a dead tree!” No messing with the greatest of all time. But we mess with this: Yasiin BeyNiels Shoe Meulman… lyrical and visual art, respectively and respectfully. The video brought to you by Louis Vuitton. Nice tribute.

Black Star Addresses ‘Palestinian Freedom’ On Stage and Backstage (Video)

During Black Star’s performance in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2012, Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) diverted from the original lyrics of “RE: DEFinition” and chose to rap in unison, “Let’s get free just like the Palestinians!” After the show, Yasiin spoke candidly (albeit carefully) about the significance of the lyric change and Black Star’s stance on justice and peace in Palestine; and elsewhere for all people.

We’ll leave further interpretations and implications for the lyric change to you, the reader. For reference, eLyrics and RapGenius both document the original lyric in “RE:Definition” going like:

Son I’m way past the minimum, it’s a verb millennium
My rap’s hold a gat to your back, like Palestinians

Studio Session: Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) x Mannie Fresh Recording New Song Called “OMFGOD” (Video)

This is some dope behind-the-scenes video showing Yasiin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def) vibing with Mannie Fresh over some of his beats… so much so it makes him drop some quick verses over them AND then pick up his pen. The resulting single, “OMFGOD,” should be out soon; but just to see Hip-Hop being made in this organic way… still… This is what Hip-Hop is at its essence! Yasiin has always mentioned that he wanted to work with Mannie Fresh. Need proof? Click on the videos posted above & below to see for yourself…

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) ‘Dreams’ In Louis Vuitton Commercial (Video)

I’ve never been a person very big on fashion, but one of my favorite artists, actors, & social activists Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def has me checking for Louis Vuitton a little more after appearing in their new ‘Dream’ ad. Yasiin Bey doesn’t just endorse anything like many of your favorite rap artists & celebrities who promote every type of cheap liquor or product that they rarely if ever use or believe in. Respect to Yasiin Bey because upon me hearing that he was appearing in an ad for Louis Vuitton I had a comforting feeling that not only would the ad be done well, but that he truly believes in the product. Now that’s a solid endorsement for Louis Vuitton among a certain segment of the community more than any other artist or athlete could give to their brand that money couldn’t buy. It’s a good look for both parties that makes sense.

Roots Picnic Recap 2012 (Video)

This is a recap of the 5th Annual Roots Picnic on Philadephia’s festival pier at Penn’s Landing. On-stage acts riding with The Roots included De La Soul, Yasiin Bey, and Rakim! Certainly one of those you-had-to-be-there events, but this recap video gives you a good taste of what went down.

Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) – “Bey”

Mos Def Yasiin Bey let’s loose this “Bey” track in honor of the birthday of his fellow Brooklynite & fallen emcee The Notorious B.I.G. who would have turned 40 today. The track is a feature for Yasiin’s “Top 40 Underdog” series. The instrumental track of choice used by Yasiin was made popular by Lil Wayne & Rick Ross for their collaborative strip club favorite called “John” (If I Die Tonight).
