Awwwww, this is beyond adorable! Blessed enough to have got on Dres’ (of Black Sheep) Facebook friend list, I caught wind of every tidbit of news on the development of this Sidney Max project. Sidney is Dres’ son; and Daddy’s got his boy coloring inside the Hip-Hop lines beautifully with this “Here Come the Birds” (produced by DJ Premier). This is wonderful on so many levels… You can’t debate it!

Man, this ain’t the only work that StoryCorps is doing; but wow, capturing stories like these is so important! I can remember my late Grandma living across the street from a dear friend who had vivid memories of the earliest of Jim Crow times… but she NEVER spoke about it. When asked, she would quickly offer a monotone “we don’t talk about those times” response bereft of any emotional content. The truths and experiences that neighbor could have shared; but she didn’t want to. Respect shout to StoryCorps for giving a platform to those who want to share… in this case who NEED to share… even when the story is soooo AWFUL.
Alex Landau, an African American man, was raised by his adoptive White parents to believe that skin color didn’t matter. But when Alex was pulled over by Denver police officers one night in 2009, he lost his belief in a color-blind world — and nearly lost his life. Alex tells his mother, Patsy Hathaway, what happened that night and how it affects him to this day.

But this video is showing skateboarders riding and getting dumped, grinding rails and making jumps! Hey, if it walks, talks and squawks like a duck, it must be, right? Oh wait, this thing can ride across water??? Sh!t it can ‘hover’ like a duck? Incredible!

Dayne Jordan and Cristopher Schafer (for Visually Inklined) did the work for this visual for “Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood†from the “Memoirs of Dayne Jordan” LP. Incredible to suggest, with the title font and initial foreground images, that we were going to get a “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” video. But nah, this is Mr. Jordan’s neighborhood… sweet is balanced by bitterness – stoops and porches, dark alleys and overgrowth. Good heartfelt storytelling. Aretha Franklin’s Unreleased Documentary ‘Amazing Grace’ (Trailer)

One of the most interesting things to come of the theatrical and commercial success of “Straight Outta Compton” is the explosion of discussions about the ‘next’ biopic. Some word has been floating about regarding a sequel to the N.W.A. biopic that focuses on Snoop and Tupac. Before that, there was substantial rumor mill grist generated by talk on a possible Public Enemy movie. Well… how about telling a story outside the rap genre? That TLC movie raised quite a ruckus, and that was a straight-to-cable work.
What say we consider a movie, more documentary-like, that was shot in 1972… edited and likely re-edited over the decades since… and set to surface at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (running September 10th to 20th)? It was billed as a ‘gospel concert’ movie for Aretha Franklin – constructed with extensive footage captured while Re-Re recorded her “Amazing Grace” album. Check out what was to be the trailer in 2010 above.
We will all just have to wait on the new new version. The world will get it when Toronto does.
