Aretha Franklin’s Unreleased Documentary ‘Amazing Grace’ (Trailer)
One of the most interesting things to come of the theatrical and commercial success of “Straight Outta Compton” is the explosion of discussions about the ‘next’ biopic. Some word has been floating about regarding a sequel to the N.W.A. biopic that focuses on Snoop and Tupac. Before that, there was substantial rumor mill grist generated by talk on a possible Public Enemy movie. Well… how about telling a story outside the rap genre? That TLC movie raised quite a ruckus, and that was a straight-to-cable work.
What say we consider a movie, more documentary-like, that was shot in 1972… edited and likely re-edited over the decades since… and set to surface at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (running September 10th to 20th)? It was billed as a ‘gospel concert’ movie for Aretha Franklin – constructed with extensive footage captured while Re-Re recorded her “Amazing Grace” album. Check out what was to be the trailer in 2010 above.
We will all just have to wait on the new new version. The world will get it when Toronto does.
The Hateful 8 (Trailer)
Tarantino. He does not do many movies. But when he does… they’re among the most interesting works of art in the world! Count on the “The Hateful 8” to keep that rep up. An all-star cast featuring a lot of actors who have a lot of time in on Quentin’s sets. Should make for a power-packed delivery of this old west flavored film.
In “The Hateful 8,” set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,†will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a Black former Union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Star Wars Korea Trailer)
Like whoa! A new trailer just showed up over on the Star Wars Korea site. Yep, the fandemonium and fanticipation is building worldwide for this movie’s December release. Check it out!
Solace (International Trailer)
I had heard Anthony Hopkins & Colin Ferrell were filming a movie here in Atlanta. I believe this is the one. “Solace” (trailer embedded above) is about a psychic working with the FBI in order to hunt down a serial killer. Colin Ferrell actually looks insane in this trailer. Should play out well on screen. We’ll see later this year (no USA release date). UK will see September 25, 2015.
HBO First Look: Straight Outta Compton (Video)
Are you ready for this? This Friday? Whether you are or not N.W.A. is coming…Straight Outta Compton! But before the August 14, 2015, theatrical release, how about a 10-minute behind-the-scenes sneak peek?

Deadpool (Trailer)
This is IT! Marvel has given Ryan Reynolds a couple of at-bats. Remember him as Hannibal King in Blade Trinity, and he has already played ‘Deadpool’ in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Now, he gets to do “Deadpool” for real for real! And the trailer is looking damn dope.
Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
The funny jabs referring to ‘animated’ and ‘green suit’… Hilarious (and requires that we link that Green Lantern subpar DC movie he was slick-talking about). It’s okay, Ryan. This movie right here looks like it’s going to make up for that plus extra love. Stay Marvel, dude. Stay MARVEL!
(We have to wait until 2016, though? Boooo…)
Miguel – “Crazy Enough” (Mini-Documentary)
“I’ve never loved anything more than music. I’ve never imagined or envisioned myself doing anything else… I was just crazy enough to believe deeper than the odds, I suppose.”
– Miguel
As humans moving through life as best we can, we often wish could go back and [at least] talk to our past selves. Had to strike a chord within us to see this piece that blends throwback footage a hopeful up-and-coming Miguel blended with commentary from the seasoned mega-talent we have come to know over the years since. SO much insight on the artist, and the man, in a short clip. Watch.
[B]ack in 2008, we shot a young hopeful in San Pedro. He took us by his house, told us about his family. He was stuck, then, in a contract with a label that wanted him to be somebody different. He was busy holding the line, a little flustered, but not shook. He believed. When we went back to him this summer, we found the same person.

Black Mass (Trailer)
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey†Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
Looks like an early fall movie ticket to buy. “Black Mass” will hit theaters September 18, 2015.
Beasts Of No Nation (Trailer)
NetFlix is doing the business! Idris Elba stars in this original film set to debut on the online network October 16, 2015.
Beasts of No Nation, A Netflix Original Film. When civil war tears his family apart, a young West African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.
This looks to be one of those stories that will take you from angry to anxious to sad and further. Whew!
Ferrell Takes The Field (Trailer)
Hilarious… and incredible! Will Ferrell traveled via helicopter to play for the Los Angles Dodgers and Angels, the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds. All over the field and all over the place. See the spectacle captured for HBO set to debut September 12, 2015 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
10 teams. 10 positions. One Will Ferrell.

Spectre (Trailer)
New trailer for the latest James Bond 007 movie – “Spectre.” Daniel Craig once again plays the lead, quintessential cool, world-hopping agent/assassin who manages to hop on his fair share of Honeyz in the midst of his secret missions. Good doses of shoot ’em up, car chases, aerial stunts, rooftop to street action and Eye Candy… Yeah, you’ll get more than your fair share for your popcorn this go ’round in theaters.
Plus a shadow organization (Spectre) with a shadowier (that a word? yup, passed spell check) leader and Bond foe.
Set for release in the UK on October 26, 2015. In the US on November 6, 2015.
Isaiah Rashad – Obey Your Thirst (Documentary)
Great ‘Obey Your Thirst’ documentary on Chattanooga (Tennessee) emcee of TDE, Isaiah Rashad. Nobody is gonna do it like him; that’s his proclamation. See him speak truth to life, and on his life & budding career, in the clip above.
“You never know how interesting your own world is until you document it.”
– Isaiah Rashad
Behind-The-Scenes: ‘Straight Outta Compton’ with N.W.A. & Fab 5 Freddy (Video)
Wowww… that CLASSIC Yo! MTV Raps footage of Fab 5 Freddy and N.W.A. on the ‘tour’ of South Central L.A. (Compton). Decades later, Freddy and ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Group’ sits down to talk about the forthcoming “Straight Outta Compton” movie (in theaters August 14, 2015). Hip-Hop In The Holy Land: Meet The Palestinian Godfather Of Rap (Documentary)
Comparisons to the tensions in Chicago were drawn with that Chiraq documentary episode we posted on here. Well, now let’s go East to a hotbed… for tensions and conflicts, yes, but Hip-Hop, too? Check out this expo on the rap scene in Israel and Palestine, including an intro to Tamer Nafar, co-founder of DAM (Da Arabian MCs), the first Palestinian rap group to break through.
Living Famously: Marvin Gaye (Documentary)
BBC docu-series ‘Living Famously’ gives a near-hour look at the life and legacy of the brilliant, gone-way-too-soon crooner Marvin Gaye. Enigmatic, tumultuous, mega-talented, tragic, soulful, sad… too many emotions and descriptors for the singer’s life and career. A view from all angles in this episode about one of the most influential musical and cultural figures of the 20th Century (arguably of all time).
Miguel – “Wildheart” (Chapter 1) [Short Film]
Crazy thing is… that at one time folks called Miguel’s sexuality into question. But he never responded with hate or seemed fake. Just kept keeping it real (and real freaky) with the interviews, music and performances. Now dude has positioned himself as the ultimate lover, even giving advice on ‘sensual strategy.’ And he is following some of his own advice in the short film (pretty much 3 music vids in 1) named for (and promoting) his “Wildheart” album. Check out the film’s Chapter 1 above; and the album link below.
What’s Coming When “Fantastic Four” Hits Theaters? DOOM! (Trailer)
Okay, so you saw us post on the heat DC has coming to blow up big screens in 2016 (like ‘Suicide Squad’ and ‘Batman vs Superman’ recently but… Marvel ain’t done killing this year yet – with “Ant Man” set for next and this blazing “Fantastic Four” reboot (first trailer here).
This comic-turned-movie war is a win-win for all action movie go-ers. And this version of Dr. Doom the Four has to face…RAW!!! Watch.
Suicide Squad (Comic-Con Trailer)
Dude! August 5, 2016 like whoa!! DC will have the theaters jumping with this “Suicide Squad” movie.
Say what? Sure it’s over a year from now, but time will fly; and it will be worth the wait. Just check out the trailer above. It starts with dark ops orchestrator, administrator and government nightmare-maker Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) talking with [gotta be] General Eiling about giving the worst of the worst super-villains one last shot at redemption… her way… going on her missions. It’s what she does (Google her DC character; she’s a BEAST and some other b-words hahaha). Of course, Batman and Superman wouldn’t be happy with her moves; but they never are (seriously, Google her).
Well… they have their own thing popping in 2016 though. Whew! DC is going HARD in the theaters next year, huh?
Then peep the cast (see Will Smith in there?) picked to play these degenerates-turned-sorta-heroes.
L.A. to The Bay (Documentary)
Like most anything, folks who don’t know what they are looking at will miss some things. Case in point: Y’all know the West Coast is not just some monolithic thing, right?
(If not, just nod along like you do. We got you after the jump below.)
