Food/Travel: Jo Koy’s Filipino Foodie Course Looks Epicly Delicious (Video)

You didn’t think Action Bronson was the only rapper that was heavy into foodie-ism, did you? Actually, I kinda get it if you did… what with Bam Bam being the one we see most across that part of the blogosphere. But First We Feast just busted through that crusted wall!

Welcome to the Curry Shop: a new weekly series that explores one of the world’s most misunderstood comfort foods. From Japan to Jamaica to China to Vietnam, every culture has its own spin on a bowl of curry—and Indian-Canadian rapper Horsepowar is here to sample them all.

The first stop on Horsepowar’s quest is the Philippines. To help Horsepowar answer some of her burning curry questions, she’s teaming up with the hilarious Filipino comedian and food philosopher Jo Koy. At Maharlika in NYC, Jo drops some knowledge about Bicol Express—a spicy, coconut-based stew that bears a striking resemblance to some of the curries Horsepowar has sampled in her travels. But the feast doesn’t end there: From remixed chicken and waffles, to 7-Up–cured pork tenderloin, Jo and Horsepowar also explore the cultural roots of Filipino fusion before making a final verdict on Bicol Express. Is Bicol Express truly a curry? Is curry really just a stew? Find out the answers to these existential food queries on the series premiere of the Curry Shop.

Will Smith’s First Time Bungee Jumping (Video)

Mannnn!

I’m saying though… Can Will at least LOOK a bit nervous? Dude runs through challenges like a kid who’s never even skinned a knee. Maybe that’s the key to his seeming invincibility when he takes on these ‘fun’ life challenges: He channels childlike wonder and thrill at how awesome the end will be; giving NO power to the travails of getting the ‘means’ (Big Willie gots BREAD) or the time spent in the meantime (don’t dwell, just do)!

Final Season For Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” (Trailer)

Somewhere between numbing pain caused by the loss of Sean Price and the recent demise of Mac Miller lies the feeling of continued mourning for late travel & food enthusiast Anthony Bourdain. Got his final season’s trailer here, featuring his voice. Might wanna grab a tissue and some water before you press play. Things might get emotional hearing his voice one more time…

(Comedian W. Kamau Bell’s comments really bring it home, too.)

Executive Producer Thandie Newton Presents “Liyana” (Trailer)

You know the movie is going to be powerful when the trailer touches your heart and wells your eyes with tears. With animation in it no less. Incredibly compelling film!

Under the guidance of acclaimed South African storyteller, Gcina Mhlophe, five orphaned children from Swaziland collaborate to craft a collective fairytale drawn from their darkest memories and brightest dreams. Their fictional character, Liyana, is brought to life in innovative animated artwork as she embarks on a perilous quest to rescue her young twin brothers. The children’s real and imagined worlds begin to converge, and they must choose what kind of story they will tell – in fiction and in their own lives.

This genre-defying film weaves an original animated hero’s journey with poetic documentary scenes to create an inspiring tale of perseverance. LIYANA is a tribute to creativity, the strength of the human spirit, and the healing power storytelling.

Critically acclaimed, and executive produced by award-winning actress, Thandie Newton, LIYANA has won more than 25 jury and audience awards and screened at more than 80 film festivals around the world including the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival and MoMA’s Doc Fortnight.

Filmmaker And Tech Enthusiast Pete Majarich Gives Us A Look At The ‘Surface Of Mars’… From Utah (Short Film)

Uh ohhh. Elon Musk, we have a problem.

There are still moon-landing deniers around who claim that all that video of that American space trip was faked. And this short film “The Visitor” (by Australian filmmaker Pete Majarich) is an even more appealing, amazing, look at a trip to what looks to be a ‘red’ planet.

This was shot in a southern Utah desert. Confirmed (hit the jump and see). So, if we make the Mars trip… proving it… could be a problem!

(But this is a cool tech-driven flick though. No problem with that.)

South African Western ‘Five Fingers For Marseilles’ Is In American Theaters Now (Trailer)

DOPE!

Marseilles was never free, but it will be. Change is coming. #AfricaRising

“Five Fingers For Marseilles” is being billed as a ‘rousing, heroic, original South African Western’ (the existence of such a genre is EPIC enough already). The trailer more than teases a bold & fully engaging story arc, azz-kickery and grit, with just enough modernness (i.e. bicycles instead of horses, guns but not automatics for the shootouts). Watch the trailer and judge for self if you agree it’s worth the upgrade to large popcorn with extra butter!

Food: McDonald’s In Mexico Has Tastier Menu Items Than In U.S. Franchises? (Video)

I’m saying though: A lot of this does look good af. Don’t think I would go as gaga over McD’s potato wedges. We can get good wedges in the states, just not at Mickey D’s. And I’m cool with that.

See How Replica Sneakers Made In China Make It Into The Hands Of U.S. Buyers (HBO)

Wow! The fiends NEED the latest Yeezys and Jordans like this bad? The fake kick market is kicking this hard. Gotta be if there is a black market with movers in it like Chan, right? Let VICE News tell it…

After the sun sets in Putian, thousands of bikes carrying fake sneakers hit the streets.

The lace-up black market is no secret in Putian, and it’s where you can find Chan, a vendor with a knack for getting high-quality pairs off the streets and into the hands of hypebeasts on the other side of the globe.

See Some Hardcore Parkour On Abandoned Hotels (Video)

They are wilding out! Free running, cray or dangerous… whatever you wanna call this parkour dudes are doing on here… This is it. The moves and music will get your heart rate up (whether you are an active participant in the sport or not).

We traveled to Croatia to film parkour on the rooftops of five abandoned hotels. Using slow motion cameras, we captured three of the UK’s best free runners reclaiming the space through movement. The hotels were bombarded during the Croatian War for Independence, and you can still see the impact hits on the walls there. They have since been abandoned for twenty years. Kupari is set to be demolished and rebuilt in 2019, so the vacancy might not be for much longer.

Soaring Sex Toy Sales In South Korea (Documentary)

Hmm. Surprising that this is just starting to blow up as an industry over there. Sex and all things naughty-naughty sell and sell well. The level of regulation and societal taboo to counter it must have been tremendously stifling. Still likely is, but looks like things are loosening up (insert your own ‘dirty jokes’ here).

Sex toy stores are opening up all over South Korea and customers have been flocking to them. In the past, the few adult stores that existed were hidden behind tinted glass and filled with dirty or outdated toys. Now times are changing and sex is becoming more visible to the mainstream.

But more access to sex toys doesn’t negate South Korea’s many sexual taboos and the lack of sex education and industry regulation.

Two Wrestlers Speak On ‘Life After Sumo’ (Documentary)

The glamor and prestige of being on top of the sumo game in the Land Of The Rising Sun… if you can get to the top. And even if you do, being ‘about that life’ comes at a price. Watch VICE SPORTS tally up the bill in this documentary episode.

Sumo wrestlers enter training stables, or beyas, as young teens and dedicate their lives to the sport until they retire. Training involves incredible food intake, heavy beer consumption as a means of weight gain and daily full-contact sparring. Along with the health impacts, most wrestlers leave the sport with little education and less money. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we visit with two retired rikishis to get their take on life after sumo.

SlamBall, Born In The USA, Has Been Reborn In China (Documentary)

Just to review, or introduce… SlamBall is a bouncy-bouncy version of basketball played on floors with embedded trampolines to facilitate super-high leaps and bounds. As described in the above doc vid, the game is pretty ‘video gamish’ and due to business and sports culture trending downfalls, SlamBall got ‘slammed’ in the U.S. However, it has found life in China.

“We never left, we just needed to take the best path for us,” says SlamBall’s creator Mason Gordon. After years with little exposure other than showcases and bar conversations between nostalgic fans, Slamball is now experiencing a resurgence in China. With a focus on bringing programs to universities before securing any TV rights, the sport is finding a foothold in a basketball-obsessed nation. VICE Sports traveled to China to check out the nation’s first facility and take in the scene.
