For The NYC Title, Brooklyn Tech’s Team Will Step In The Arena (Documentary)
If you cannot wrap your head around ‘step team’ as a sports/athletic activity, look at this and reconsider. Just saying. They go in as hard as any team on the court (or anywhere else).
You won’t find the most successful team at Brooklyn Technical High School on the basketball court or on the football field. You’ll find them stepping in the cafeteria – sweating, laughing and striving to keep their crown as NYC’s regional champions. In this VICE Sports exclusive, we met up with the all-female Lady Dragons step team to see their pressure-packed final days of preparation for NYC regionals.

Great story, regardless of what you ‘decide’ about the nature of the competition.

Marqus Clae – “XXSPLOSIVE” (Video)
Is it just mine, or does anyone else’s heart immediately hop on an emotional roller coaster when a young emcee starts freestyling over an all-time classic beat? Sure this Chronic 2001 joint came out just beyond the Golden Era, but this is DEFINITELY one of those beats an emcee should NOT touch until he or she is ready.
Well, good news, true believers. Marqus Clae is READY!
And oh… turns out we already know dude.
Marqus Clae is an actor, known for Cloak & Dagger (2018), Shots Fired (2017) and 106 & Park Top 10 Live (2000).

Salute to the young spitta for keeping it True School and killing this track (he rapped that he needed the ‘beat to be deceased’) and cremating it. Yes indeed. Watch his “XXSPLOSIVE” freestyle above!

Cloudy Uchiha – “Shot Caller” feat. 1iSinny (Prod. By DJ Creecha)
Brassy horns envelop your ears at the opening of this braggadocious, and confident track from Detroit emcee Cloudy Uchiha. A sharp lyrical display with intricate rhymes is layered over kicks and snares masterfully constructed by DJ Creecha. 1iSinny joins Cloudy in a tit-for-tat of Hip-Hop back-and-forth sparring. “Shot Caller” is that banger that will make you feel like you banged your head by the time it’s over.

Ski Beatz – “Ground Wire” (Video)
What in the anime is this??! Well, for one, shiz iz CRAY! But so is the crazy beat the video accompanies. Haaa! But hey, it’s from Ski Beatz. Respek on his name (a quick trip back through the archives on here will teach you why).
His 10-track project, “Switched On Bap,” is out now.

Chris Rivers – “Now Or Never”
Chris Rivers blesses us with an introspective freestyle over Isaiah Rashad’s “Shot You Down†he calls “Now Or Never.â€
It’s easy to be distracted or held back with everything that happens in life. But sometimes you have to accept that it can’t be now forever. Sometimes it’s Now Or Never.
Listen to dude run the alphabet in the rhymes. Pretty clever.

Changing The Game: Lacrosse Comes To Harlem (Video)
Up top, it’s all about the blacktop. The lyric, “Basketball is my favorite sport,” not lacrosse… right? Well, these kids are into it AND it’s helping them level up to a better shot in life.
Basketball courts may still dominate north of 125th Street in New York City, but more kids than ever are taking up lacrosse as their sport of choice. We followed Javon to hear what his friends think about lacrosse and how he plans to make his mark on the game.

Watch. Might have to change that lyric.

Lifestyle: You’re In Los Angeles. You’re High. What Do You Do Next? (Video)
A weed travel show. Excellent idea! And an appropriately laid-back episode to boot.
On VICE’s weed travel show ‘BLUNT REVIEWS,’ we trek to places where weed is legal to review things a cannabis-consuming tourist can do while they’re stoned. On this episode, VICE’s Darlene Demorizi spent a day getting blazed in Los Angeles, where she cured her munchies at Pink’s Hot Dogs, a historic restaurant that tops franks with guacamole and nacho cheese. Then she unwound at Lit Yoga, a THC-friendly studio, and stopped by Puff Pass & Paint to make a little art over a glass of CBD-infused wine.

Centric – “Gutta Rap” feat. Lil Fame x Rockness x J. Gunn
Salute! Centric loaded the clip for this single and made it a bang-bang-BANGER! Plus, I heard ya, J. Gunn… every young spitter out here is NOT a mumble rapper. Facts!
M.O.P. meets Heltah Skeltah. “Gutta Rap” is the epitome of undiluted, unadulterated Hip-Hop music. Oakland, CA producer Centric links up with Lil’ Fame [M.O.P.], Rock [Heltah Skeltah] and the self-proclaimed ‘best rapper you never heard’ Joshua Gunn [NC]: scratches courtesy of DJ Flipflop [CunninLynguists]. With so much new music being released on a daily basis its difficult to know what’s worth your time but when you see those underground Hip-Hop legend’s names you know exactly what to expect, back-to-back bars over some A+ production. This song isn’t part of any particular project (yet!) just a stray bullet in preparation for Grand Opus [Joc Scholar & Centric] sophomore LP “High Power.”

Science: Elon Musk’s Plans For Humans Moving From Earth To Mars Have Likely Been Thwarted (Video)
Dang it.
Musk put the numbers, plans, presentations, and MONEY on it. I was thinking futuristic ‘Martians’ would be humans – ‘terrans’ if you want to speak ‘Star Trek’ about it – in the not-so-distant future. But now we have proof of water on Mars, meaning the possibility of LIFE. And it turns out that we already have a ‘flavor’ of Trek’s prime directive (e.g. planetary protection rules) already in place… and blocking any Space X effort to terraform the Red Planet for human inhabitance. That, and the realization that what it’d take to give Mars an atmosphere is all but impossible.
Watch the vid above and follow the link below to read up.
(But hey, upside: Life on Mars already! Maybe…)

Chris Rivers – “Stay Hungry”
Riverrrrs! Dude is the hammer and the beats are all nails. Only one way to go at ’em… Bang on ’em… HARD! Knock holes in walls and floors if necessary. This freestyle is just another example.
Chris Rivers is kicking off this week’s freestyle over “Holding It Down†by At Wendy’s, off of their “We Beefin?†EP with his version called “Stay Hungry.†We can clearly see that Rivers never lost his hunger with these insane flows and braggadocios bars hitting us with humor, punch lines, and that good old fashion Chris energy.

Blctxt – “Time” feat. Joshua Worden (Prod. By Cheeze Beatz) [Video]
Much respect and a hearty salute to Blctxt for sending us this latest release – “Time” (out now) – for a good once-over. And the ruling: It’s dope. Trust! Or listen for yourself, then agree.
“Time†is the new single from Blctxt. Reality binds us with the concept of time but in our minds, time is almost nonexistent. The cool Jazz flip with big drums is produced by Cheeze Beatz (co-producer of “Bartier Cardi”) while Blctxt explores this theory of handling time in the verses with Joshua Worden crooning on topic via the chorus. Stream the new single, “Time†on all digital music platforms.

SlamBall, Born In The USA, Has Been Reborn In China (Documentary)
Just to review, or introduce… SlamBall is a bouncy-bouncy version of basketball played on floors with embedded trampolines to facilitate super-high leaps and bounds. As described in the above doc vid, the game is pretty ‘video gamish’ and due to business and sports culture trending downfalls, SlamBall got ‘slammed’ in the U.S. However, it has found life in China.
“We never left, we just needed to take the best path for us,†says SlamBall’s creator Mason Gordon. After years with little exposure other than showcases and bar conversations between nostalgic fans, Slamball is now experiencing a resurgence in China. With a focus on bringing programs to universities before securing any TV rights, the sport is finding a foothold in a basketball-obsessed nation. VICE Sports traveled to China to check out the nation’s first facility and take in the scene.

Angie Martinez Speaks On And Shares Her Lost Interview With 2Pac
Hmm. last time the Interwebs were abuzz with talk of 2Pac and Hot 97 in the same breath was when it was ‘the world’ vs. Funk Flex ranting about the way Pac talked & moved while he was here. Folks pretty much took the view, “Flex, it’s been decades. Let it die.”
But time and again, we see that 2Pac and all things related come up and come back to life (so to speak).

H.E.R. – “I Used to Know Her: The Prelude” (EP)
It’s funny how H.E.R. put out an EP after H.E.R. LP situation… Well, not ‘funny’ so much… just heard the first track of this set following in the footprints of “Lost Ones” by Lauryn Hill (even calling it “Lost Souls”) and felt the line flip was appropriate. Maybe? Maybe not? Ha!
Either way, don’t stop at that song. Stream all of “I Used to Know Her: The Prelude” for the FREE.99!
