MMM (Documentary)

I ain’t come here to die. I came here to live… I need more…
Diddy

I’m digging several songs off of this project. And the video above provides a behind-the-scenes look at the construction of Puff Daddy & The Family’s album “MMM.” Studio WORK! Inspirational snips and quips captured during Diddy mini-rants. Plenty, plenty studio guests. Diddy musing and laboring over the board. Driving every part of the creative process… Feel that 90s Bad Boy energy!

ESPN’s 30 For 30: Chasing Tyson (Video)

Plain and simple, in boxing’s mid-1980’s to mid-1990’s, Iron Mike Tyson was that dude! The ‘Baddest Man On The Planet’ was trained and became known for throwing ‘punches with bad intentions’ that left opponents destroyed and fight watchers astonished. Tyson was a star gone nova who cast a commanding shadow over boxing. Meanwhile, there was Evander Holyfield… the man who captured the heavyweight title when he knocked out Buster Douglas, the only dude to date who had knocked Tyson out… the man long-considered a mild-mannered champ, a legitimate champ, but never a truly great champ. In that era, when there were several who might ascend to that status, the way to it ran through Mike Tyson. To be the man, you gotta beat the man; and Iron Mike was that man. Holyfield was ready for that status, ready to take on ‘the man’ in 1991, but Tyson had to pull out due to injury. Rescheduling of the fight of destiny was further delayed when Tyson was convicted of rape later and had to spend time in jail. Even when he was in prison, away from the sport, people overwhelmingly considered Tyson the best of in heavyweight boxing.

All the while, Holyfield was fighting for titles and standing – dramatically gaining, losing and regaining the heavyweight crown. He was fighting. Tyson was sitting. And still, no real respect as a champ on his own… until November 1996. Holyfield, then 34, would finally get his shot at the heavily favored and four-years’ younger Tyson. Truly, this would be when Holyfield could earn the title, not just a belt, but undisputed status as ‘the man’ in heavyweight boxing. Yeah, ’96 gone be that year, when Holyfield was really considered the ‘Real Deal.’ After spending much of The Golden Era “Chasing Tyson,” Holyfield would do it.

Twice.

And that second time… maaaan! Yeah, another incredible 30 For 30 by ESPN. Watch above.

Triple 9 (UK Trailer)

We posted the Red Band trailer for “Triple 9” a while back. Now as the February 19, 2015, theatrical release date approaches, we get the UK trailer for the film. Watch that above.

When a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist, they realise the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down”. The chaos that ensues when a police officer is shot in the line of duty is just the diversion they’ll need to do the job, but whether they have the will to kill one of their own is an entirely different matter. Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck, action packed finale tangled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.

Don’t Get It Twisted: Spike Lee’s “CHI-RAQ” Is Serious Satire, NOT Comedy! (Video)

CHI-RAQ is not a comedy. CHI-RAQ is a satire… In now way, shape or form are we not respectful of the situation that is happening in Chi Raq… So, people don’t get it twisted… This film was about serious business.
Spike Lee

For the benefit of critics [who may have forgotten how ‘pre-Malcolm X‘ Spike made message movies], CHI-RAQ’s executive producer released the above video to clarify his work’s approach to the real-life tragedy that is essentially Chicago-at-war. Spike is doing a satirical movie, in which any laughter is basically to ‘keep from crying’ as it were. This is not like the ‘Chi Raq’ documentary on which we posted earlier here. Spike Lee sternly denies critics’ commentary that allege that CHI-RAQ is making light of the violence and senseless losses of life in Chicago. To punctuate his statement, Lee ends his vid with what is pretty much an alternate trailer for the movie – blending snips from the film that communicate its seriousness.

Watch…now. And remember that you laughed at parts of “Do The Right Thing” too.

The Hateful Eight (Official Trailer)

Getting close! “The Hateful Eight” (or “The Hateful 8” if you go by the earlier trailer we posted here) has a Christmas (December 25, 2015) release date for select theaters. The rest of the screens will get cold-bloodied on January 8, 2016. Here’a another trailer for Tarrantino’s soon-to-be box office smash. Samuel L. Jackson can talk some talk, can’t he? Ha!

CHI-RAQ (Trailer)

Now THIS is a Spike Lee Joint! “CHI-RAQ” hits theaters December 4, 2015. Over the top dramatic antics and dialogue to match and get out the message of an out of control situation. Telling a story you cannot ignore. This trailer teases a movie that channels the energies of “School Daze,” “Do The Right Thing,” and “Malcolm X” in the best ways. Tapping the actors familiar to Lee’s old movie line-ups (seeing you Samuel L. Jackson, Wesley Snipes) and folks you get to see stretch in new ways (go for it, Nick Cannon)!

You got the real Chi Raq story from us on here before. Let Spike show it to you in his surreal way.

(Interesting approach in there, too… holding back that ‘piece’ to make ’em put down their pieces as a way to peace in Chi-town.)

Dirty Grandpa (Trailer)

This “Dirty Grandpa” looks hilarious; sorta pervy… which is what takes us back to hilarious. Perfect way to take Zac Efron from lovey-dovey land down to the gutter for a bit. Perfect escort on the trip – Robert De Niro. Check out the trailer.

Right before his wedding, an uptight guy is tricked into driving his grandfather, a perverted former Army general, to Florida for spring break.

Robert De Niro Stars In Short Film “Ellis” (Trailer)

Robert De Niro lends his voice and theatrical weight to this short film project, “Ellis.”

The short film stars Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro, was written by Academy Award winner Eric Roth and directed by the artist JR whose Unframed art installations in the abandoned Hospital complex serve as the set for this powerful and timely film.

Wonder if there will be any insights on modern immigration debates and issues embedded in this film. Check that. Wonder if there will be any overtly deliberate references to today’s immigration debate.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Ultimate Fan Trailer)

This just got even crazier! So, the trailers (plural) to this point for the new “Star Wars” movie weren’t enough? Apparently not. Re-edited by Shawn Cauthen, above we have aaaalllll the footage let out on “The Force Awakens” so far merged into a mega trailer.

Daddy’s Home (Trailer)

Wanna have a fun for almost the entire family good time at the theater? Bet on Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg acting like some fools in “Daddy’s Home.” The trailer is teasing a bunch of laughs; Ferrell, playing a stepdad being foiled at most every turn by bad boy former-but-always-biological-dad played by Wahlberg. Got a trailer above, with a bonus trailer version after the jump.

Both dads love the kids… just kinda differently. In theaters December 25, 2015.

ESPN’s 30-For-30: Trojan War (Video)

Ah, college football fans. Let’s talk about the Pete CarrollUSC Era. He took over the program at the University Of Southern California after the 2000 season, and eventually restored the luster and swagger of the once-great Trojans with his football knowledge, upbeat personality and recruiting skills (and a couple of star graduates who’d come back to visit, if recollection serves).

Soon enough, Southern Cal was back! Topping the college football world in home field attendance; turning out win after win, multiple Heisman Trophy winners (e.g. Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush), marquee TV respect (ABC & Keith Jackson don’t just call any game)…

BUT…

There was sinning at the revival of USC. And the worst sin of all D-1 sins, THEY GOT CAUGHT! Lost scholarships, overturned victories, a returned Heisman award… oh my. All of the fall would come to light after the 2006 National Championship game. USC lost the Rose Bowl that year to The University of Texas. Then the proverbial bottom fell the f##k out!

The hurt ran deep and are really only numbing today. At least now we can really talk about it. Well, Coach Carroll, Heisman-winning quarterback Leinart and others can that is. Watch “Trojan War,” an ESPN 30-For-30 special, above.

Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows (Trailer)

Pioneer soul singer Syl Johnson left the music business in the 1980s to open a Chicago fried-fish chain; having struggled with all but no acclaim fro decades. That does not mean he was totally forgotten though; just underappreciated. Heads have likely heard (knowingly or not) samples from his “Different Strokes” (from 1967) in the works of Run-DMC, NWA, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys… well, you get it. Talk about ‘unsung.’ This documentary will spotlight an artist to whom it was denied for far too long.

Check out the official trailer above.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer (Official Trailer)

I’m cautious about getting too excited about Star Wars, but the trailer does look promising… The date is set (December 18, 2015) and the level fan-demonium will be off the charts as the debut date for this next installment (Episode VII) of the Star Wars saga nears. Check out the official trailer for “The Force Awakens” above (which will stoke the fan flames even more).
