Hotel Clermont (Trailer) [NSFW]

Screenshot 2015-08-28 06.16.43

The Clermont Hotel on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta closed in 2009. But those who know know the internationally known basement strip club is still up and running. This documentary trailer teases (get it) the full story of the counter culture establishment frequented by bands, true ballers and all kinds of folk throughout history. Not just talking about the club below, but the scoop on residents who rented rooms above. True ATL history here. Hit the pic above or the link below to watch the trailer, then wait with anticipation like the rest of us.

Had to give it the Not Safe For Work label due to some brief nudity… There is a strip club there after all, sooooo…

Rewind: Kendrick Lamar’s Breakout Performance in Atlanta 2011 (Video)

Before he was selling out The Tabernacle (historic concert venue in ATL) or playing Music Midtown, one of the largest festivals in Atlanta, a young Kendrick Lamar rocked the stage at the Masquerade back on April 2, 2011.  Well before his albums “GKMC” and “To Pimp A Butterfly,  young “KDot” made noise & grew his fanbase off of his mixtapes.  I was in attendance for this show along with my radio co-host Jayforce to see him perform.  We were guests for Kendrick’s show in part because our program The Beatz & Lyrics Show was the first show playing Kendrick’s music in Atlanta on a regular basis & we also conducted his first Atlanta radio interview. So naturally we looked forward to finally seeing him in person.  He did not disappoint it’s crazy to look back now because Ali, his famed engineer, was his DJ that night and his hype man was Schoolboy Q who at the time was only known by a few die hard TDE fans.  This particular show was Kendrick’s official breakout show in Atlanta when you knew he was going to be a star on a larger level.  Kendrick made a lot of fans that night and it doesn’t surprise me at all the success he has gained.  So check out this vintage footage I shot of him rocking the crowd before the albums, before the baby twist dreads, & before the worldwide acclaim.

More footage after the jump below…

Adventures With ArtByOdell : Los Trompos Exhibit at High Museum (Video)

Quite often I get asked why I go by the name of “ArtByOdell” it’s pretty simple really my name is Odell and I am an Artist.  Art is something I have been passionate about for years and the High Museum here in Atlanta, GA is one of my favorite places to visit.  So when they had an opening ceremony for their latest Los Trompos exhibit I had to go check it out and cover it for the site.  The term Los Trompos translates to Spinning Tops in Spanish and they are beautiful interactive pieces made with a special fabric that is very colorful and flexible.  The artists Hector Esrawe & Ignacio Cadena both hail from Mexico City worked together to bring us these beautiful creations.  They are featured in video along with my good friend DJ EU who provided the sounds for the day.  I even ran into the homie Blc Txt a local Hip Hop Artist here in Atlanta, GA.  The exhibit will run until November 29th 2015 it is located on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center in the Silly Piazza right outside of the High Museum.  Be sure to check it out before it is over and be on the lookout for the next Adventure with ArtByOdell!

Rap Quotes ATL : Dirty South Edition (Video)

So when it comes to classic rap lyrics many involve the artist shouting out their hometown or where they may reside at current time.  Not always content at just shouting out their city, but many rappers detail clothing stores, restaurants and of course the “Shoe Modeling Spots” (Strip Clubs).  Jay Shells (Artist/Designer) hailing from New York City has taken his love of rap quotes referencing cities to the next level.  He is behind the movement known as “Rap Quotes” where he actually creates signs with the lyrics of certain areas and places them exactly where the rapper mentioned.  He has done this in the cities of New York, LA, Philadelphia, and now he has come to the city I call home….Atlanta.  He was brought to the city by the founders of A3C festival and in the video shot by Animal New York you catch Jay placing the signs up all over town.  Jay Shells is coming back to Atlanta in October be and we will definitely talk with him for the site and Beatz & Lyrics Show!

Rogue Dynamo – “Roses and Karma” (EP)

tumblr_n4ym9waNku1rn4ebpo1_1280The Atlanta Hip Hop scene is a very diverse one.  There are a number of different artists that range from Boom Bap, Trap, Rock, House etc.  Adding to this diverse scene is Rogue Dynamo who has released her new Karma and Roses EP which is an eight track sonic adventure.  She not only gets busy behind the mic she also helps with the production of this new project.

“Roses and Karma”, the newly released EP from ATL’s own Rogue Dynamo is all about maintaining balance in a world full of constant changes and evolving challenges. The album serves as a Karmatic journey with Hip Hop’s very own anti-heroine navigating the voyage. Love, betrayal, relationships, and the hunger to obtain greatness despite the odds, fuel the eight-track-odyssey known as Roses and Karma.Led by the hit indie single “On My Own”, and including production from Rogue and a talented group of others, the album showcases another facet of Atlanta-based Hip Hop.

The 15 Project By ‘Fahamu Pecou’ at the ‘High Museum Of Art’ (Video)

Fahamu Pecou is an Artist, Scholar, Father, oh and he is also known as THE SHIT!  He recently had another edition of his Artist Live Talk Show The 15Project (Andy Warhol was famously quoted as saying “…in the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”) The 15 Project facilitates that claim as an irreverent fusion of pop culture, fine art, sketch comedy, musical entertainment and much more.  The show was co hosted by Fabian Williams with DJ Kemit on the 1’s & 2’s and this went down at the renown High Museum. DJ Dug Boogie + Children Benefit

dj dug boogie + fam - jayforce.comAs you may have heard, Atlanta based DJ Dug Boogie’s wife, Linett Wilder lost her battle with Lupus on Tuesday. The hip hop community is coming together to raise some funds to help Dug & his children through this difficult time.

On Tuesday December 23rd, there will be a benefit concert at the Apache Cafe in Atlanta

Performances by
Clan Destined
Arablak
J-Live
4-IZE
Boog Brown
DJ Nervex
DJ Gee Supreme
Hosted by Fort Knox

We are suggesting a minimum of $10 donation at the door, but any support at all is greatly appreciated.

“This fundraiser is on behalf of my friend and DJ comrade Dug Boogie. Dug Boogie has been a prominent figure amongst the hip hop DJs in Atlanta and needs our help. His beloved wife Linett passed away from complications of Lupus on the morning of 12/16/14. Now what you may not know is Linett and Dug adopted Linette’s niece and nephew a few years after their mother passed away.

Now that Linett is gone, our homie Dug Boogie needs assistance for the two children that he’s become a dad to. Fortunately, he has the burial costs covered but I figured we in the hip hop community can offer some extra help to relieve some financial stress while he segways into being a single parent.”

Thanks in advance,
Rashuri Rasyrious
