He’s been dubbed ‘The Willy Wonka of Weed.’ (like “Willy Wonka” ain’t a ‘weed movie’ already). Twenty Feet From Stardom (Trailer)
“When you’re a background singer, it is a springboard. But it can easily become quicksand if that’s not what you want to do.”
Talk about ‘unsung’… Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill sang some of the greatest songs of our time… in the background! “Twenty Feet From Stardom” spotlights the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 20th and 21st centuries. Included: archival footage and intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting. Here’s the trailer. Shout out to my folks at Bad Magics for the scoop.

DJ Woody Presents ‘Hip Hop Is 40’ (Trailer)
Here’s a trailer for “Hip Hop Is 40” – an audio-visual collage documenting Hip-Hop’s birth and growth into a worldwide phenomenon told with animation, archived footage, and appropriately chosen and woven music. Turntablist DJ Woody pays homage DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash… covers all of the elements of Hip-Hop and does justice in celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Robocop (Movie Trailer)
It’s a reboot of the sci-fi action classic. Robocop features a new robo-suit and some new faces (Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton). Ought to be good… even though we have to wait until 2014 to see it. Check out the trailer above.
Don Cheadle x Black Milk – “H8DES” (Short Film)
Vanity Fair tapped Don Cheadle to produce a short film for its ongoing series, The Decades. Don, in turn, tapped Black Milk to produce the score. Here is the finished work – “H8DES” – that draws on 1980s to drive its story. Reaganomics, the rise of AIDS and the crack epidemic, technology of the era… all in there. Watch above. Behind the scenes clip after the jump.
Dirty Wars (Trailer)
“America knows war. They are war masters.”
In the war on terrorism, almost anything goes. And that ‘almost’ (e.g. what America won’t do) part of the war strategy is getting smaller all the time. Drone strikes, night raids, torture enhanced interrogation …and civilian casualties. Author, investigative reporter and whistle-blower Jeremy Scahill documents the rise of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), the most secret fighting force in U.S. history in “Dirty Wars,” exposing operations carried out by men who officially ‘do not exist’ (and who are therefore beyond the reach of domestic or international law). No target is off-limits. NO TARGET IS OFF LIMITS!
Wake up America! We can find some justification for some of this to be certain. But how far will we take these “Dirty Wars” when we know there is no real accountability for whatever atrocities are done in our name? Who determines who is an ‘enemy of the United States’ (maybe an American citizen… maybe in America)?
NFL All-Time Great Lawrence Taylor Profiled in “The Life & Times†(Documentary Trailer)
Drugs, sex, controversy… Probably traits of a life story that should be made into a movie. Oh, it’s Pro Football Hall Of Famer Lawrence “LT” Taylor’s life? DEFINITELY should have been made into a movie by now! Well, Showtime has done it. One of the most controversial professional athletes in history, over the top drug abuse, and crimes of a sexual nature… yeah, LT’s life will make for a compelling subject for the documentary debuting Friday, September 20, 2013, at 8pm ET/PT.
Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) Stars In “Clapping for the Wrong Reasons” (Short Film)
To say that Atlanta’s Childish Gambino (aka actor/rapper Donald Glover) is one of Hip-Hop’s more eclectic characters is a profound understatement. So, don’t just take my words at face value when I say, “This movie is CRAZY!” Can’t be sure this is anything like ‘a day in the life’ of Gambino… but whose ever life this is… wow! This is Childish Gambino starring (with several celeb cameos) in the short film “Clapping for the Wrong Reasons.”
WARNING: You’ll probably want to look away when Gambino starts digging in his nose in the last half of the film. Just saying.

Terry Crews Stars As ‘Major Lazer’ (Video)
It’s a TV show teaser… no wait, a music video for “Scare Me†featuring raunchy dancehall queen Timberlee and Peaches. Whatever it is, it’s got DC Comics’ cyber-warrior Major Lazer brought to life in HD by Terry Crews. The visuals have ‘opening credits’ and what is, in effect, a mini-pilot of the Major Lazer TV show… which may or may not be a real show (but might make a cool one). Check it out!
“Scare Me” is available on the “Free The Universe” LP by Major Lazer (out on iTunes now).
The 2002 ‘Beltway Snipers’ Story – “Blue Caprice” (Film Trailer)
In theaters September 13, 2013, “Blue Caprice” relates a story pulled from the headlines and accounts of the ‘DC Sniper’ attacks of 2002. Starring Isaiah Washington as John Allen Muhammad and Tequan Richmond as his son.
‘A sniper must be able to calmly and deliberately kill without an apparent reason. A sniper must not be susceptible to emotions such as anxiety or remorse.’
‘Chi Raq’ Documentary Highlights Chicago Death Tolls That Mirror Iraq & Double That Of Afghanistan (Video)
“Chi Raq” is a compelling video portrait of life in South and West Chicago by London filmmaker Will Robson-Scott. Shout out to my homie Hustle Simmons who appears in the mini-documentary/video portrait to speak on his own personal loss & offered some positive words about the escalating problem in Chicago.
“For the past decade, Chicago has been enduring a violence epidemic, with a death toll in the thousands and casualties mirroring the losses experienced by the US Army in Iraq war over the same period. Allowing its subjects to take center stage and tell their stories in their own words, Robson-Scottʼs film is unflinchingly honest in its depiction of life on the streets of one of the most dangerous cities in America.”

“Hackney’s Finest” (Trailer)
A “lighthearted journey into the dark underbelly of London†that tells a story that includes Afghan heroin smugglers, Welsh-Jamaican arms dealers and Eastern-European skinheads…among other things… The movie “Hackney’s Finest” is all that with ‘fish & chips’ (a little UK humor y’all… c’mon).
The indie flick, written by Thorin Seex and directed Chris Bouchard, was well-funded by its Kickstarter campaign. Due out 2014, this is the trailer for “Hackney’s Finest.”
Inmates and Prison Officials Agree: “The House I Live In” Documentary Exposes The Failures of The U.S. War On Drugs Policy (Video)
HEADLINE: Inmates and Prison Guards AGREE on Failures of the Drug War!
Above is a behind-the-scenes teaser for a screening for Eugene Jarecki’s documentary “The House I Live In.” The venue: Joseph Harp Correctional Center (Lexington, Oklahoma, USA). Making a documentary at a jail… sure. But viewing it there, that’s different. But you know drug enforcement policy is more than a bit *messed* up if the C.O.’s and the prisoners can agree that it is!
See clips from the film (executive producers: Brad Pitt, John Legend, Russell Simmons and Danny Glover) after the jump. VERY interesting…

12 O’Clock Boys (Trailer)
“I’ve been on this earth for a decade… and a couple of years. So, what’s that make me? I’m a grown a** man!”
Premiering at SXSW 2013, this is the documentary trailer for “12 O’Clock Boys.” At the core of the story is Pug, a hardened 13 year old, trying to join The Twelve O’Clock Boys, the notorious urban dirt-bike gang in Baltimore (Maryland, USA). The youth gang runs wild in the streets, clashing with police who cannot do not give chase for fear of endangering the public. Pug suddenly loses his older brother and really looks to The Twelve O’Clock Boys as a surrogate family. The “12 O’Clock Boys” documentary is directed by Lotfy Nathan.
HBO Films: Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight (Trailer)
“Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight” premieres Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 8PM Eastern Time on HBO. This documentary has all the indications of greatness. An epic true life story: the then Heavyweight Champ Muhammad Ali refusing to enlist and go fight for the USA in Vietnam when he is drafted, a crisis of faith (his objections to the war), prison time, appeals taken all the way to the highest court in America… star power: Danny Glover, Christopher Plummer, Ed Begley Jr., Barry Levinson… and playing Ali… NO ONE! No one plays the Champ better than [stock footage of] the Champ!
HBO Films can pull it off though; as the documentary will focus more on the Supreme Court judges, their rulings and places in history, rather than on Ali himself.
Technology: How To Build A Giant 9-Foot-5 inch Mechanized Robot (Video)
Now this is kinda cool! All too often, we see fantasy tech played out on screen with CGI, but check this real, in-person… um… in-robo tech out. The Wired Mech debuted at Comic-Con, and the people were dazed and amazed! Nowadays, the word is that the Mech is doing the morning show circuit. Nine-foot-five-inches of robo star power baby!
Check out the above clip on the Mech’s debut as the result of the work of dedicated designers, engineers, and staff… bringing unique tech experiences on (and now off) the movie screen.
‘[T]he crew from Stan Winston School and Legacy Effects reflect on a job well done. From concept to unveiling at Comic-Con, this was a labor of love, representing 2000+ man hours of work. Rest up guys, because next year … we are bringing the Mech’s BIGGER BROTHER to the show.’
– Wired
The above clip is the final, Part 7, of a Wired series that relates the story of the Mech’s development and launch. Check out Parts 1 through 6 after the jump.
Spike Jonze Writes and Directs His First Movie About – ‘Her’ (Trailer)
Okay… here’s a weird upcoming movie from vanguard music video director Spike Jonze; his first feature film. Weird, but interesting. Considering how folks use computers and mobile technology to hook up, one might have seen this angle coming. Still feels… well, watch the trailer. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, his ‘love interest’ Scarlett Johansson, and Amy Adams.
(‘How would you touch me?’ Wowwww…)
Thor: The Dark World (HD Trailer)
The sequel to the 2011 Thor movie “Thor: The Dark World” hits big screens November 8, 2013. The timeline for the sequel picks up where “The Avengers” movie left off; focusing on Thor. This trailer alludes to the action and story of the sequel – grand-scale battles, teaming with Loki (WHAT?) and more. It’s said that this one will track closer to the Thor of comic lore. We’ll hope… and see… this Fall.
